One could argue that maintaining and upgrading a brushless RTR over a period of years requires as much, if not, more dedication and skill. Mistakes can be costly and there's a learning curve.. I definitely respect the patience and skill that goes into these Tamiya bodies though.

Nostalgia undoubtedly plays a big part in why we still buy Tamiya. There's no denying some other brands offer far more for the money. Interestingly in Japan, "bashers" are pretty much non existent. The market here is dominated by Tamiya, Kyosho and Yokomo. I don't recall ever seeing an Arrma anywhere!

Yeah you can't beat seeing and handing the cars that you first saw 40 years ago. A modern RTR can't compete with that but it certainly can on performance. I thought we lost you for a second there, Pete. 5-star dramatic intro, my man! Haha! But hey, you're bang on! We all love the nostalgia, character designs, build experience, and overall enjoyment factor of our Tamiya cars. Oh, and don't forget that box art! They just nail it, every time. But how they come up with some of these prices (which seem to be significantly higher in the UK) is beyond me. It's the biggest hurdle I think when it comes to purchasing a Tamiya v.s. an RTR Arrma or the like. As a noob to the hobby, I'm sure one would wonder why the Tamiya is so special? How do they justify the high price tag for a product that can't perform as well as it's competition? At the end of the day, we all love our Tamiya's. Heck, that's what brought us all together on this platform, isn't it? But you just can't beat the feeling of sending an Arrma Mojave 10 feet in the air at 50 mph! :)

@@poorboysrc Hiya Fil. Oh yes Tamiya will always have a special place in my heart but things have moved on in recent years and you have to weigh it all up, including the price. Yes I think we pay more for things generally but especially some of the Tamiyas. Somebody in our group got sent a list of Tamiya prices by a hobby shop but they had inadvertently sent the one with the price that the shop pays and there is a huge markup on some of them. Like you say if it wasn't for Tamiya then most of us wouldn't be here on KZbin so they have been a force for good. It's great that there is so much choice in the market now so we can have a cherished Tamiya that took us weeks to finish and also a 50mph basher that we can send through the air and not worry about. I just can't afford the hobby anymore sadly because of life's hurdles, l am not buying anymore cars for the long while! I am certainly not giving up the hobby and Tamiya are all about the feel and nostalgia and l will always love them and more then any other manufacturer! but Pete you are not wrong these RTR cars are half the price and come with hop ups as standard! Totally agree too though that the Scorcher is the daddy of them all. Cheers mate.

Ah that's a shame. I've certainly been through some skint years in my life and you do have to prioritise. If you already have a fleet of RC's then you can definitely do it on the cheap and maybe sell one to buy bits for the others. Yes watching one of the old Tamiya cars bouncing around takes you back to simpler times. It's great that there are so many options these days and you can use the RTRs for bashing around. Yes I love the box art Sand Scorcher. I ran my previous one quite extensively but not the one I was showing in this video. I will do one day but maybe with a different body. The kits I do have came about by selling things out of the house and getting them on sale (probably cause they are less popular). Not looking to buy anything else for a while though.

Ive built more than a few Arrma 6S series rigs. My favorite is a 8S Big Buggy based on a Kraton/Mojave, Castle ESC/Motors, Titanium parts, yada yada. GREAT Platform. Even a stock Typhon, Kraton, Mojave or whatever 6S RTR are excellent. Then you can turn it into anything you want - they are Beasts!!! My custom 8S Buggy will easily go over 100mph on pavement and near that on a grass field. Crazy Fun. Arrma!

I love Tamiya’s because my first 2 real RC’s were Tamiya. They always have great detailed bodies, and I like my RC’s to look as realistic as possible. The rtr Bashers are cool and I love my rtr crawlers but there’s just something about building a kit or restoring a vintage RC

For me,its all about the nostalgia.....collecting all the greats from those Tamiya P*rn guidebooks back in the day. (84 to 93)....ones that were just out of our reach as younglings. Its also all about the building of kits,i have a couple of modern ready to runs,but have never established the same level of love for these as i have with something that i have personally built. You develop a special bond with a car as you turn it from a box of bits to the finished product. For this reason,ive never really been feeling the modern arrmas etc.....i also fail to get excited by their non realistic body shells. Saying that,i can definitely see the attraction in running these 4s monsters when i watch videos from yourself,and many others. Like you ,ive failed to find many modern Tamiyas that get me to part with my beer money. The XV01 and the BBX are an exeption,although for that kind of price tag i would rather go down the kyosho legendary series route.....the quality of the components provided pound for pound are far superior to what Tamiya offer. Theres only a few that I'm looking to be re releasesd now: King cab,Toyota Monster racer,Avante 2001,and the MO1 Mini monte carlo! Common Tamiya,take my money!!!😅 Loving that clubman mate,was that one of the Legendary 1275GT's?? Another huge Mini fan here,my first 3 cars were a mini 25,then a mini Mayfair ,then a Cooper RSP!!! Fond memories ......along with not so fond memories of rust!!😮 I do have a new in box M05 Mini kit in my collection,ready to be turned into my first car,my Mini 25!! Loved that car.....until i wrote it off!!😢 Learnt to drive in it,passed my test in it,first police chase in it,first crash in it,first court summons in it.....😅 Happy days!! Hiya James and thank you for possibly the longest comment I've ever had 🤣 Yeah the nostalgia is a big factor with these but there have been some modern ones like the Konghead that offer something different but still very Tamiya. Also like you say it is very satisfying to start with a box of bits and end up with a working model. I can't remember if you have a Kyosho Turbo Scorpion but if not then highly recommended 👍👍 Yeah that was a 1275gt mini. It was such fun but yes, rust 😩 Before that I had a Mini 850 and a Clubman estate. Ha, I did get pulled over by the police a fair few times but just 7 day wonders rather than court 🤣 Anyway thanks again for your in depth feedback. Glad to provide the background for your ciders 😁🍻

Funny that you should mention the Turbo scorpion mate, that and the Ultima are very high on my shopping list for next year! I love my Turbo Optima, and have the Koswork edition Optima Mid new in box still from last Christmas (not had enough time to build it yet) But, i love the quirky vintage design of the turbo scorpion..... Looks very different from anything else I have built! I loved the clubman estates..... survivors are worth some serious money now eh bud? My H reg RSP cooper was gorgeous, and was pretty nippy to, unfortunately the dreaded rust started bubbling up all over and I had to sell it before Iost a lot of money. In hindsight, I wish I would have kept it now. The one I always wanted was the ERA turbo..... still do for that matter, maybe time to have a mid life crisis and hunt one down!! As for the 1275GT, fond memories! I helped my mate de seam his yellow one in the early nineties, unfortunately we didn't really no what we were doing and it literally fell apart at the seams. Hi again young Mr. Wylie! Back from the family routine visits finally! Well my friend, a very well presented video expressing almost exactly how I feel about Tamiya! Nostalgia is certainly a big part and building a new Tamiya these days still gives me the same buzz it did in the 80's! I think newcomers who don't have that experience will probably be perplexed by the notion of a plastic Tamiya kit, especially with the higher priced models. I saw an email a while ago that was mistakenly "leaked" by a big Tamiya reseller - the mark-up on the trade price to the retail price was extortionate!!!!! If the traders were not so greedy we would all probably buy more Tamiya! £100 more for a pre-painted body - who the feck would go for that?!?!?! Anyway mate, this video is proving to be a great talking point with a lot of engagement - well done Sir! Hope the weekend was a good one with a few tasty IPA's included. Cheers! 🍻😁👍

It's interesting that some of the cars have been discounted which I guess means that people didn't think the original price was good value. What do you reckon to that TD2 given your experience with the TD4? Oh yeah I remember seeing that price list. Does make you feel like you are getting ripped off a bit. Yes £100+ for the painted Squash Van is taking the piss. Even if you really didn't like doing the paint I think you'd have a go at that price! Like I was also saying I do have most of the ones I feel nostalgic about and a lot of others too so it's difficult to find something I really want now. Yes I did hope that people would get involved in the comments and they have which is great. I have indeed enjoyed a few IPA's and hope you have too. For me it has been checking off the wish list I had as a kid. But I also like the newer stuff coming out so lately I have been torn. Spend a lot to get something I don't want to tumble around and get all scratched and beat up or spend the same and get something new and built for taking abuse and goes 3x faster and is much more reliable. Plus I think I get a bit burnt out on the building process. Even though I was building different things it is still the same process and the fretting of getting everything just right got a bit tedious. The other side is I hate that Tamiya pricing is so all over the place. A TT02 can be had for a little over $100 but a sand viper is closer to $200, nothing more than a pile of plastic parts, a smaller body and less decals but almost twice the price... why? I have gotten so many of the more budget friendly ones I am stuck wanting the pricey ones like the Sand Scorcher and currently here they are just over $400. I can spend $50 more right nod get either the 4s Kraton, the 4s Outcast and with the sales currently the 6s Fire Team!! so to buy one to sit on the shelf and look pretty or get one I can tear up the yard with is a real struggle! Hence me coming home with the new Vorteks and the Mojave Grom recently! I had thought about doing a video similar to this but you summarized it very well so no need LOL!! Take care Pete.

Hiya Addam. Yeah to start with it's quite easy to think of all the cars you couldn't have as a child but once you have them it's more difficult to choose what to get next. I know what you mean with the builds and you've done an awful lot more than me. I'm only really doing builds when I'm in the mood for it and not just because I have an unbuilt kit. With the Sand Scorcher I got one back in maybe 2014 when it was about £250. That got destroyed in the fire unfortunately and the one I have now was one I got off ebay along with that Wild Willy you bought from me. I think it was about £400 for the pair so not too bad. Oh yeah that Fire Team looks like a beast. The 6s cars are rather serious and need a bit of space to run. Is your Vorteks the 3s? That's the only off road 3s I don't have. Should be fun! Great info on the Tamiya models. Main thing I like about tamiya models is building them and watching watch you’ve built actually work. I’ve just got back into making them. So far I’ve done the Mercedes car, the Audi Quattro. I’m now doing the Nissan skyline drift car and I’ve also got a lunchbox I haven’t built yet. The next one I’m getting just for some fun is the stadium blitzer and then as a show piece I want to get the Ford bronco. The car I really wish Tamiya would release again is the Mini Cooper. I’ve still got one I build at least probably 25 years ago but I would love to build another one.

I'm almost 50, even as a kid I always felt Tamiya was more toy grade. Grasshoppers, Blackfoots, Clodbusters, tons of plastic. One of the only Tamiya models I ever drooled over was the Bruiser with 4wd and a real transfer gearbox and real leaf spring suspension. So much metal! Super rare and expensive even back then! Tamiya never had a competitive line, you never saw anything Tamiya on the track, let alone in the winners circle. It was always Team Associated, Kyosho and Losi battling for the winners circle while Tamiya's offerings were a step above Radio Shack and Sears, being "played with" in backyards and parking lots.

When I was a teenager I didn't really know much about RC's other than toy grade and Tamiya so Tamiya seemed amazing. Oh yes the Bruiser was a nice bit of kit. I do think that Tamiya's were better suited to backyard and park bashing. I really like a lot of their designs, especially the 80's ones. You have a very good point, and it is hard for me to admit, being the Hardcore Tamiya fan. As you said and most the comments agree it is nostalgia, and the fact you can build it yourself. Why people buy R2R Tamiya Models, or pay others to build them is crazy. Saying all that though, do other cars have the same personalities, when you buy these mosters is it just like a burger from the Golden Arches, because everyone is the same, you dont have the problem where it will not go straight, or it cuts out after 5 mins, or it will fall over on every corner, ok these 'features' are not idel, but it goes towards the character. I hope Tamiya do bring out some corkers for 2025 or at least 2026, well sometime in the next decade 🤣😂👍

Hey yes you can't beat the nostalgia factor of Tamiya and also the fact that you get to build it. You guys certainly get the most out of them with all the crazy customisations you do. With the RTR cars there is still the possibility to do mods and get into the maintenance and all that. I do love the Tamiyas but I do have huge fun with the Arrma's because they are really quick and you can beat them up without worrying too much. Luckily you can enjoy both sides of the hobby as nobody is telling you that you have to have one or the other. Yeah I'd like to see Tamiya coming out with some more of the quirky stuff next year. @ Tamiya’s are simply superb to build. The design of the artwork and instructions is the best in the world. I agree they can be pricey all bits considered. Lots of good value RTRs particularly right now. Arrma are really hitting the right notes with the Fury and Groms and the 4/6s lines have been strong for years.

It just seemed so amazing at the time and such lovely scale looks. I love Tamiiya kits, despite the sometimes ridiculous pricing and lack of things like bearings! I always wanted a Clod Buster, could never afford one, but I finally got one this year, and I realised how bloody awful they are out of the box. I've upgraded mine a lot, UK Monsters chassis and loads of other bits, probably runs to about £700 now. It's so much fun to drive despite being rather slow, it puts a massive smile on my face!!

Oh yes the lack of bearings is quite annoying and also quite often a lack of oil shocks. I've not had a Clod but I did drive a friends one which was stock. It was good fun but I always winced when it landed badly as so much hard snappy plastic 😬 I ended up getting a Losi LMT on the basis that it was strong and fast out of the box but still had that quirky big tyre monster truck handling. My friend had been talking about doing loads of upgrades to his Clod but he ended up giving it away. Many thanks indeed for your great feedback. Much appreciated 😁👍

Not so much to keep up with the joneses and KZbin content, but for the whole experience of the build and then tweaking the model... So... The title says Tamiya are expensive, but within 5 minutes - You say that if someone wants a kit, Tamiya are cheaper than Kyosho? In my opinion, what Tamiya do - They do the best!. & Are the market leader. What Arrma do - Lots of others do.. I have lots of Tamiya cars, an Arrma Big Rock & a Rival MT10. As to the comparison with Kyosho, Tamiya have a bigger range which includes some more budget friendly kits, but if you compare say the BBX to the Kyosho Turbo Scorpion then I think that the Kyosho is better value. Anyway it's good to have the choice and I've got more than 3 x as many Tamiya's as RTR bashers. It's fair to say that the bashers go out for a drive more often though. Tamiyas in my opinion are quite affordable. I just went to Japan last month and kits are quite cheap there. Once you factor the cost of shipping, handling and when they sell them in shops, the costs start to add up. For example, the Tamiya Lunchbox kit, new is 8,470 Yen, which is about $85 Australian Dollars. by the time it gets to Australian shops its about $135-145. Scale that up to the more expensive kits like the Top Force Evo or the Avante/Egress line and its starts to get really expensive. Oh and regular green Top Force in Japan is 23,760 which is about $234 AUD , in local shores they are closer to the $400 AUD mark.

You can NEVER have enough radio controlled cars as long as youve got the space to put them all in 😂 but yes, Tamiya are becoming expensive once you add the extras to the kit. As for building said Tamiya kit, it has to be for nostalgia seeing something you built come to life and not necessarily box-art either. Another reason for buying Tamiya is that i can make more 'Creations' come to life as you can add more parts to another kit. As for RTR stuff, I like my 3S Granite as it keeps up with the bigger boys toys so ive got the best of both worlds 👍 Catch up soon Pete 👋

Hello young man. Well yes if you've got the space and you can still afford to buy food then you can get as many RC's as your heart desires. Tamiya is perfect for you with all your custom creations where mostly it's about the looks rather than the performance. I do love building tamiya kits, I've built 5 now i think. 🤔 One of them was a second hand tt02 chassis without electronics and a body, so i think that counts. Lol I've even spent more on a brushless system for my racing fighter than the kit cost in the first place!! But hey, thats Tamiya for ya. 😁

Oh yeah if you want a kit with good instructions that goes together then Tamiya is hard to beat. Also if you don't want to beat the hell out of them then they hold up just fine. Id love to see more kits in the hobby for sure. For example look a the kyosho outlaw rampage pro kit, all the upgrade parts included, do your own paint and electrics. Perfect! Now of arrma could offer something similar in their line I'd be quite interested.

Yeah Kyosho make really nice kits for sure. I really like my Turbo Scorpion and Beetle. I don't think that Arrma will get into the kit business because I saw the founder guy in an interview saying he wasn't interested in that. Just bought a DT03, with 1060 esc, Torque tune motor and oil shocks, for £81.00 There is nothing else in the RC market as good value in my opinion. (TT02's come close).

That is indeed a great deal you got. I think that they are a good value Tamiya and run great. Mine is brushless and I had it running on 3s the other day and it went like a rocket. I couldn't afford any Tamiyas as a kid so got a midnight pumpkin and a sand scorcher as an adult. I'd never run them and have a 6s infraction and a traxxas UDR for all my running fun. They are mega tough and ridiculously fast. Parts are pretty cheap and most important they perform.

Wow i,ve been out of this game since the mid eighties now with owning mainly Tamiya and a couple of Mardaves.Prices now have gone a bit silly especially as i would love to have a FTX Superforza haha. Certainly recognise that beach as its where i live too.

Yeah I think that Tamiya's were always expensive and if you take inflation into account they are probably cheaper than they were back then. I started with the Hornet I remember the Bigwig was coming up and I went for 1:1 scale car drive and partying but always kept my hornet and as I was growing up was the SRB and loved the ranger but no money to get one, so forward for the 50 mark and with cash I got hold or a Ranger but stresses to run it and as no rere shells so I built a blackfoot body and put it on the SRB base and ended up with 2 scorchers, 2 rangers,FAV, Hornet, blackfoot charger,Willy 2,, Brat and Now building a TT02 and GF02 and might fit WW2 bumper on it which cost mount up and I think the building of a Tamiya had us with those adverts toy they are not but now the words how much as the prices are mad like BBX which I love to buy even the dancing rider if you can find it and RERE ranger, hilux other ones would be great but they will bump the price up the RTR ready to run and cheaper is for mad fun and not worry about and for me saving sad SRB'S bigwig and sand rover is good but we are the generation who was brought up on them, we are older have more spare cash. Hey yes I think a lot of us did the hobby in teenage years and then gave it up for all the 'grown up' stuff but got back into the hobby in middle age. Not sure why Tamiya don't re re the Ford Ranger as they are still making the Blackfoot body. It's great that we can have a bit of both in the hobby with the retro kits and also the modern stuff. People need to quit comparing Tamiya to other brands for whichever reason. I'm not a Tamiya fan boy, but a few of their models are stand outs. Some must haves. The BBX is one where I believe it bridges a few gaps, its retro looking and car be raced. Has a massive following in a few parts of the world, Traxxas and Arrma make for better bashers, but lack completely any sentimental or nostalgic value. Also Tamiya make better 1/10 bodies.

Also the nostalgia appeal of the re release kits is a big deal. I like a bit of both so I've got 30 something Tamiya's and 10 bashers from other brands, mainly Arrma. Oh yeah I remember looking at those Hilux clones. I think for me that is one where I'd like it to be the original. Yeah some of the more premium Tamiya kits have better plastic like the XV-01. The suspension arms on a lot of them are in a more durable flexible plastic but yes there is still rather a lot of the hard snappy plastic around. Many thanks for your great feedback 😁

Arrma is my go to ready to run. I wish they came as kits. I love to build tamiyas but im scared to run most of them in case I break it. Not only are arrma way stronger if you do break a part its usually £5 to £10 gor a replacement.

Yeah me too with Arrma. One good thing about having cars from the same range like the 3s and 4s cars is that they share a lot of the same parts so you quite often already have the spares you need because you bought them for one of the others. I want to love Tamiya, but the idea I will not only be paying brushless basher prices for a delicate brushed model, but that I will have to assemble it myself (meaning, in essence, that my labor has negative value) incenses me. Also, I find it odd that the basher brands have invested more in clipless bodies than the more aesthetically focused brands. Its 2024, why am I still looking at body posts and body clips on my scale model RCs?

Ah yes if you haven't got nostalgia for a particular model and you don't enjoy building kits then Tamiya might not be for you. With body posts I think that the advantage is that it gives you a lot of options to put different bodies on the same chassis so I can see why Tamiya still use them. Hi there. Yeah when I got back into the hobby 12 years ago the prices didn't seem too bad but there has been a lot of inflation since then unfortunately. Also I think Tamiya know that they are selling to a middle aged customer who has possibly got a bit of spare cash these days. Some of them are way overpriced but it's worth looking out for those ones that obviously didn't sell well and get discounted like I was saying on the video. Well I can only comment on what I have which is Tamiya and RTR bashers. Unfair to call people idiots for buying Tamiya because like I was saying in the video, it has a lot to do with buying the RC that you had or wanted when you were younger. Also the cheaper Tamiya kits are a good way for people to get into the hobby 👍

I left a big comment before and it didn't let me edit all my typos and then I couldn't post it and now I forgot what I said 😆 I think I like the slower speeds myself, I also don't have the urge to push them too hard and do crazy things like launching them too high. The Tamiya 1/10 scale and speed kind of suits me but the price climbs have really put the breaks in me buying what I would like. The general cost of everything is higher than ever before and at first they blamed it on global shipping costs which have since come back down but never been returned to the end user. I could waffle on now about how I see the world but will stop myself. I tried an Xmaxx once and didn't like it, too big, too heavy and I didn't have enough space to really enjoy it and open it up. I would like an MT10 but hate the body. Maybe one day a tenth scale basher that looks good will emerge.
