32-34 years ago, had a 14turn double in mine, the car was fully ball raced also had those tires, but from the frog, and the sand tires from the grasshopper, as well as the Grass Hopper body but I also ran taller wheels than those and a custom made 8.4volt panasonic 7 cell SCR pack. I Changed the front diff pickup point to the original grasshopper solid adaptors, to replace the Hornet spring loaded adaptors. It's the two screws each side that locate the differtial to the chassis. Mine also had resoviour oil fill shocks on the rear. I ran the stock 3 speed controller, but with a battery eliminator. I also used the Grass Hopper battery plate. I also had a total of three different gear ratios. At one point in time I also had the Roadrunner body on mine. Have a Hornet now, but it's totally stock.

What speed is recommended for this car? at 22 mph is the differential or ring gear likely to wear? I don't think it's good to run it at 25 mph... Greetings! (between this and the kyosho axxe) which one do you stay for and why?
@ShenRC2 жыл бұрын
Hi as long as you use a steel pinion with the hornet it can handle modern brushless motors but it don't have a great suspension so a brushed 21T motor is good for it. the axxe I had it and it does drive better than a hornet but dirt always gets inside the gears and messes up the pinion gear and spur gear so I don't like it at all. Thanks for watching.

Hi that's the nature of this chassis it's a faulty design best you can do is do the fishing string mod I show on my channel to help it out a little bit... for on road probably slicks will be best I think you can find some on e-bay that fit the hornet wheels. Thanks for watching.

very minor differences, 380 vs 540 motor and Hornet are looser rear pod hangers is pretty much all. I think a GH with a newer 390 motor would be pretty happy with a smaller+lighter 2200mah LiPo juicing it.

@@nateg4513 been forever ago mid late 80's and Hornet class racing. had to be a Hornet and had to be a stock motor, 27 turn 20 degree brush timing and bushings (motor). you could do little mods to the suspension and use any car body you liked, it just had to be a Hornet and 6 cell NiCad. VW bug body was a big advantage.

at 11:48 side view of front pogo sticks... if'n you remember, I said put on road pan car front springs to the topside of those towers.. or cut pen springs at 5/16" and flatten both new ends (edit: on each) so they're both a little less than 1/4" long. it'll help stabilize a Hornet/Hopper more than you might think. the stock rear springs in the rear pod hangers are a pain and often omitted but its definitely better with them in there and twisted open some to be a little stronger pressing the pivot pin down. they're supposed to do what the fishing line does but right at those rear slotted hangers left+right independently. if they're long gone make a pair from .020 music wire... if you got the good old hangers that were molded to have the springs in there. .020 will be a little stiffer than the stock were.
@ShenRC4 жыл бұрын
The fronts working perfect...if only the rear worked a 1/4 as good as the front suspension then it would be pretty good! LOL!! Thanks for watching.
@modelnutty65034 жыл бұрын
@@ShenRC how Hornets bump steer with front suspension movement up+down, those little springs on top will put it straight much quicker, and when the rear is lifting the front they're not flopping loose to let the wheels turn a little. kinda similar with the rear springs at the slot pivots, more stable sprung down with a little more force at the ends of that long pin, it keeps it in the round bottom of the slot more often so the pod toggles left+right a lot less. you can also make the new rear pivot springs from a couple medium safety pins works, a little stronger than the stock springs back there. edit: really, try this stuff! I'm remembering my over powered Hornet days here (from 35 years ago!)

These Chinese brands nearly always give you a much beefier motor than Tamiya do in the box and they cost a lot less than a Sport tuned too! Whenever I need a cheap brushed motor with some pep, I always turn to spares for Chinese vehicles. Cheap + fast 540s are in abundance and there's plenty of 390s too which make perfect upgrades to the Tamiya 380 motors if you want something a bit quicker but don't want the full 540. The lower weight of a 390 means less unsprung mass vs a 540 too. Good for buggies with heavy unsprung axles like the Grasshopper and Hornet etc.
