Tamiya Matilda Mk.II in 1/35 scale by The Inner Nerd
Time lapse video of the full build, painting and weathering of the Tamiya Matilda Mk.II in 1/35 as shown by The Inner Nerd
The first part of this video shows the use of Photo Etched parts and scratch building techniques on the Tamiya Matilda Mk.II in 1/35 scale model to detail hydraulic pipes and electrical cables professionally and cheaply around both the cockpit and wheel bays. Locitite 406 CA superglue is used in this process combined with CA superglue accelerator/activator to join the two dissimilar materials. Also used are details from Eduard Brassin which are additional parts to the Tamiya Matilda Mk.II in 1/35 scales box
The second part shows the Tamiya Matilda Mk.II in 1/35 scale models surface preparation techniques such as filling panel gaps and seams with Deluxe Materials Perfect Plastic Putty modelling filler/putty and sanding them smooth to get a seamless join between parts using a range of sand papers from 800, 1200, 2000, and 3000p dpi grit papers. Also Black Basing techniques are included in this section using Mr Hobby "Mr Surfacer 1000, 1200 & 1500 Finishing Surfacer" thinned with Mr Hobby Self Levelling Thinner 400 to prime the surface ready for painting, sprayed through an airbrush using Harder & Steenbeck Evolution Silverline Solo Needle/Nozzle: 0.15mm with Badger 1100 with Anti-Pulsation Tank Working Pressure 22psi (1.51bar).
The third part of the video demonstrates the Tamiya Matilda Mk.II in 1/35 scale model using the BLACK-BASING technique to achieve a pre-weathered look and surface texture replicating that of an aged and worn aircraft. Harder & Steenbeck Evolution Silverline is used with Badger 1100 with Anti-Pulsation Tank Working Pressure 22psi (1.51bar). Also included in this section on the Tamiya Matilda Mk.II in 1/35 scale model is the Engine Exhaust painting using Alclad 2 Lacquers (Airframe Aluminium, Aluminium, Steel, Jet Exhaust, Copper & Pale Burnt Metal) and Tamiya clear paints to create a burnt metal effect. 3 layers of Mr Color GX100 Superclear III thinned with Mr Hobby Self Levelling Thinner 400 seal the decals in. This can be decanted and sprayed through an airbrush such as the Harder & Steenbeck Evolution Silverline Solo.
Decals for the Tamiya Matilda Mk.II in 1/35 scale model follow painting with the aid of Mr Hobby Mr Mark Setter & Softer products. These products allow the decal to form to the shapes of the Tamiya Matilda Mk.II in 1/35 scales panel lines and surface which you can see in the video.
Next is the weathering of the Tamiya Matilda Mk.II in 1/35 scale model. This is started using Abteilung 502 & Winsor & Newton oil paints thinned with white spirit to a wash consistency. Then used as a panel line wash the oil is applied across the Tamiya Matilda Mk.II in 1/35 scale model to achieve a dirty, grimey & worn look. Further weathering including Unthinned Abteilung 502 Oil Paints to create streaking and water marks, along with AK Interactive weathering Pigments (Gun Metal, Russian Earth, Europe Earth, Medium Rust and Pigment Fixer, Worn Effects, Dark Streaking Grime Rainmark Effects) concludes weathering.
Items Used
Airbrush: Harder & Steenbeck Evolution Silverline Solo Needle/Nozzle: 0.15mm Compressor: Badger 1100 with Anti-Pulsation Tank Working Pressure 22psi (1.51bar) Paint: Mr Hobby Mr Surfacer 1000, Mr Hobby Mr Surfacer 1200 & Mr Hobby Mr Finishing Surfacer 1500 thinned with cellulose lacquer thinner Tamiya Acrylics thinned with Tamiya X-20A Thinner Mr Hobby Aqueous Abteilung 502 Oils - Black / Industrial Earth / Olive Green Winsor & Newton Oils - Yellow Ochre / Raw Umber / Burnt Sienna / White AK Interactive Pigments - Gun Metal, Europe Earth, Russian Earth, Medium Rust, Pigment Fixer Vallejo Masking Fluid Winsor & Newton UV Cut Matte Enamel Varnish Brushes: Pure Sable Brush - Various Sizes Glue: Tamiya Extra Thin Cement Tamiya Poly Cement Revell Contacta Professional Loctite 406 CA Superglue Sanding: 3M 600p / 800p / 1200p / 2000p / 3000p sheets & sponges Tamiya Polishing Compounds (Course, Fine & Finish)

Hi everyone thank you for watching the video of my Tamiya Matilda MkII. I apologise if the music level is too loud, it wasn't like that in the edit, but at least you can turn it down if you want! - I'm still getting used to the voice over editing 😅 (and I like to cater for the hard of hearing 😉) But I hope you can still enjoy the video and commentary regardless. Also there are subtitles on this video showing the tools & equipment I used so make sure you select the "CC Closes Captions" to see those. Many thanks The Inner Nerd

The painting of your models is everything. The layers add dimension and make a plastic model kit look like someone took the real tank and shrunk it down.

I'm a new subscriber because I'm awed by your skill at painting & weathering these models. Have you, by chance, done this to any tank models that were also detailed on the interior too? I'm interested in what you'd do (or did) for painting & weathering the interiors in those cases.
@TheInnerNerd
@TheInnerNerd 2 жыл бұрын
Hello and welcome to the channel :) I haven't done a full interior model tank before but the weathering process would be the same in terms of the washes and oils etc. The colours would be different to mimic the oils and greases found inside vs the mud and water effects you see outside. Pigments would also be useful to show dirt brought in by the crew around the footwells. A very brief overview but hope it helps somewhat. I shall make an interior model sometime since I have the urge to build a Tiger some day so will pick one with interior too. Thanks for watching :)

Great work on the Matilda, really like your whole build, paint and weathering process. Just about finished my own build of a Matilda and would like to know how you finished off the spotlight on the side of the turret. Did you use the molotow pen for the lens like you did for the small mirror or did you use silver paint? Can't quite make it out in the finished article. Many thanks and keep up the excellent builds.

I use the 2 so that the lacquer primer doesn't contaminate and conjeal the acrylics I send down my H&S. If you've got any more questions just let me know.

nice techniques, nice finish. music / voice mix is messed up but you know that. given you are quite talented, I have 2 suggestions: 1 take a look at MRP paint - it's a lacquer and will blow your mind compared to tamiya (and pretty much everything else); 2 check out Scale Modeller Critique Group on Facebook - some super talented guys on there, multi genre / multi scale, but it's all about getting better. Best, Nick.

What welding? It’s a Matilda II. Go and look at a real one. The turret was basically one big casting, the main hull two big castings with a join that’s invisible from outside the tank and pretty much everything else was either flush-riveted together, or, if it needed to be removable, bolted on. There were some spot-welds on things like the rear fuel tank’s brackets and equipment boxes but they’d be invisible at this scale. As would most welds of any kind., but I’ll spare you my griping about out-of-scale welds and rivets.
