One small point. It is not a "Rebox" of the F4F-4 kit. The Wings are new. The F4F had 6 .50 guns in the wings where the FM-1 only had 4. Additionally, the Engine and gearbox were also Uprated and differed from the F4F, being a later configuration of the base 1820 Radial and gearbox. Tamiya have reflected this in the kit. Essentially it is a new variant of most of the base kit with new parts included.

@JohnSmith-jj2yd3 ай бұрын
The modifications they made to the kit are extremely minimal. Though you're right it is technically not a rebox, it effectively is, especially considering it's a thirty year old kit. The key point is it isn't a "new" tooling, which could confuse a lot of people, especially given the price difference between this and the base model F4F-4 kit, with this being almost double. They didn't even add the option for finding wings, they basically just put some putty in the third gun port and the ammunition access panel lines.

Good job fading the fabric-covered flying surfaces. Even the Wildcat at the Yankee Air Museum's flying stable in Ypsilanti, Michigan, has a lot of contrast in those areas, despite being a show bird.

Great looking build. I've always loved the Wildcat, and RAF markings look really good on it. I've got the same kit in going to be doing in a pre-war US bare metal and yellow scheme. For postshading, I've found adding hull red, instead of just black, helps to keep some warmth in the paint, and also seems to blend better with the other camo colors ( especially tans, browns, and greens ).

I went to Hannents today when visiting the RAF museum. I mentioned to them that although I had got stuff from them via the net I had no idea their physical shop was here and I only found out through your channel. The guys in the shop then showed me your models in their display case. They look even more amazing in real life!

Great build Luke. Just a little suggestion on faded or darkened colours: for the middle stone use buff or an off-white colour; to darken it use a tan or any light brown. For the Earth brown colour use tan or yellow & to darken use a red brown or olive drab colour. I’ve been experimenting with camo highlight & shadow colours for a while in preparation for the painting stage of the Eduard Mirage iiicz from the SAAF. It’s a step-by-step video build & I’m going to discuss selecting the correct colour to darken or lighten your base colour; without using white or black. If you’re interested I can send you a link once I’ve uploaded it.

"The FM-1 was identical to the F4F-4 except that the machine gun armament was returned to the four-gun arrangement"-Detail & Scale. "The FM-1 was a Eastern Aircraft built variant of the F4F-4 Wildcat."-Wildcat Walkaround, Squadron Publications. This kit clearly includes the same model of the 14 cylinder, twin row Pratt & Whitney R-1830 engine it has had since 1994. It is correct for the FM-1. The FM-2 got the 9 cylinder, single row Wright R-1820 engine. If there's a major goof in this kit it's that it includes only 1 supercharger intercooler radiator, whereas the R-1830 A/C should have 2. It can be fixed, but it's a pain. I think the carrier-bourne A/C should have the solid rubber tail wheel, too. Your build is really nice, I'd say

Many of the Med-based Martlet/Wildcats were actually Martlet II`s, the airframes built for the French rather than the RN but then diverted to the British. This meant that they had "French-style" metric cockpits rather than the "British-style" version of the Mk1`s and some other modifications to French standards.
@codyfrench76686 ай бұрын
A few notes about the desert schemes - the Azure Blue underside that you sometimes see in Profiles is almost certainly fake. Given the nature of how these F4Fs were received by the Brits (originally being intended for the Greeks and painted overall NS Light Grey) and how they were rushed into service in North Africa, it's known that several of them never even received the Dark Earth portion of the scheme. In 1/72 (obviously not helpful for this kit) Xtradecal do provide some of the desert schemes on a Yanks with Roundels set, and possible on a second sheet as well. Those notes aside, I really enjoyed this build and video. It's been a good while since watching a build video very nearly tempted me to go order the kit, but this one handily accomplished that! Once I clear a few things off the bench I may just have to go for it. Looking forward to more!
@machmodels6 ай бұрын
Wow that is some great information on the scheme! If I return to such a scheme I’ll have to refer back to this comment. Perhaps my search for decals wasn’t thorough enough… usually Xtra do both 1/72 and 1/48 I believe. Great to hear that you enjoyed the video! Really appreciate the comment👌🏻☺️
