Thanks for another thorough review. Any plans to compare this new Tamron 28-75 G2 to the Sigma 28-70?
@DustinAbbottTWI

Not necessarily. I don't really have time for that, though I have looked over my review information for the Sigma. The Sigma has more distortion and isn't quite as sharp as the Tamron.

Thanks for a great Definitive Review, Dustin. I have both the Sigma 28-70 and now this G2 version. After comparing them, I can safely say that everything is better on the G2. The only real strength I can see for the Sigma is if you demand the absolute smallest. Sigma 28-70 will now be sold of. Congratulations Tamron!

And another great review, with plethora of details and facts. Thank you Dustin ! For those who think this lens does not go wide enough (first, think again but globally, then) the 17-28 f/2.8 will be the best complement. Resulting in a 17 to 75 mm focal range at f/2.8 all the way... for 1800 USD/Euro (or so). How about it ? Anyone fancy traveling back in time, when zoom lenses barely were "birthday lenses" with bottle bottoms as glass elements ? No, really ? OK, so let's be happy we have such exceptional pieces of gear !

Eventually I’ve got round to upgrading from the original lens (A036) to this lens (A063) that I purchased yesterday. Early indications are consistent with some of the main findings in your excellent review, in particular, the faster auto-focus and image quality. I have a strong preference for primes that fall within the scope of the 28-75 FL but this lens might prove to be a game changer for me. My thanks.

Just got a copy of the 28-75 G2. Didn't think I wanted it, but I'm a little disillusioned with my Sony 24-105mm f4 at the long end, and the sale price made it worth the chance, $699. Color me impressed. This is a great lens. Contrast and sharpness are exceptional, and the bokeh is gorgeous. It even beats the Sony 24-70mm GM2 in sharpness overall, IMO. I have access to a 24-70 GM2 and did a landscape comparison on my A7r5. The Sony might have been a hair sharper in the center at 100%, but not by much if at all. Very close. No contrast advantage to the Sony either. Where they differ, at least in my testing, is the Tamron is tack center-sharp in the broad midframe all the way out to the edge, but then falls apart a bit in the very extremes. The Sony GM2 is good in the midframe, but not quite center level sharp, like the Tamron, and does better at the extreme edges and corners. For me then, I, shockingly, prefer the Tamron. Even though I shoot primarily landscapes, I'll take extraordinary midframe performance of the Tamron to the Sony's excellent extreme edge/corner performance. I also compared it to my Voigtlander 65mm f2 APO, and the results were basically the same. The Voigt again might have been just a hair sharper in the center, but the Tamron still bested it, at least at wider apertures in the midframe. Color and contrast were basically on par as well. I never expected this good a performance out of this lens. And as for my 24-105mm, it's also very sharp in the center (maybe a hair less sharp than the other lenses mentioned here), but the Tamron at 75mm cropped in is sharper than the Sony 24-105 at 105mm. So I gain an f2.8 aperture and don't even lose any telephoto reach. The 24mm on the other hand is a sacrifice, but I can live with it. I can stitch a panorama if I need to, or bring my 20mm f1.8 G or 16-35mm f4 PZ along.

Purchased this lens a week ago for A7CR and the image quality/colors really are amazing. If i would compare the images to my Sony FE 20mm F1.8 G (not the best comparison, i know) the colors/quality is generally about the same. For the first time in a long time i know that this lens will stay. Also I never cared about focus speed, but this lens is extremely fast - noticeably super fast. Very good review! It looks like it's improved in several areas. I can see how people who are okay with 28mm- would spring for it, especially if the bokeh is a little better overall. I don't know what it is in euros but here in Sweden it is 290USD more expensive than the G1 version (I suspect the gap will be even wider this friday) (edit. the Black Friday, not this upcoming friday :) ). Some of the more high-end Tamrons have not been priced sympathetically here compared to elsewhere like the US while the lower end have been rather competitive. I don't know what to make of it. As far as sharpness, detail and overall resolving power, how does this lens fair on the Sony A1. I noticed when I upgraded to the A1 and used the Tamron 28-75 v1, I found that my images especially in 75mm was noticeably less sharp than my g-master lenses. I’m curious did you see improvments overall when mounted to the Sony A1 and how does it compare to g-master lenses when you take into consideration sharpness, contrast, and resolution?

In Poland price difference is 378 USD. I have G1 and want to have more pleasant bokeh and faster / more accurate AF during quick action (4 years old child on f2.8). Dustin, do you think Sigma 28-70 can meet this requirement or rather should go with G2 (here it's over 2x more expensive than used G1).
@DustinAbbottTWI
@DustinAbbottTWI 3 жыл бұрын
I definitely like the G2 better than the Sigma, but my biggest reason for recommending it might be the focus speed because of what you have described. I don't think the Sigma would be any faster than your G1, but the G2 is definitely faster.

@@DustinAbbottTWI Definitely =) What I would really point out (due to personal experience with other lenses) is the focus ring. This one is right on point. It's smooth, while giving you enough resistance for precise control. Definitely a lot better than, for example, Sony's 24-105 G which is very smooth but doesn't have any resistance to it. Being able to program linear/non-linear focus pulling is very nice, too. Once again a step in the right direction by Tamron.

Which lens would you recommend for street photography and traveling, this Tamron or the Sigma 24-70? Price difference is only 90€. I guess that the Sigma has better build quality, but it`s 300g heavier... How do corner sharpness and esp. autofocus speed compare? Sure, the main difference is 24 vs 28mm, but that`s not very important for me.
@DustinAbbottTWI
@DustinAbbottTWI 2 жыл бұрын
I'm not sure the Sigma actually has better build quality than the G2; it's quite nice and thoroughly weather sealed. The Tamron has the faster AF speed, though the Sigma is still very good. Less distortion on the G2 at 28mm vs 24mm on the Sigma, though if you zoom into 28mm the Sigma would be closer. I personally prefer the Tamron, but if you don't have another wide angle option, the Sigma might be the better choice due to that extra 4mm of width (which DOES make a difference)

Hi Dustin, do you notice any noise coming from the lens when it is on your camera? I noticed some after attaching it to my a7R III. It's fairly mild, although I hear it when I'm up to the EVF. Focusing doesn't actually seem to make a difference really. It sounds like mild high pitched electronic noise, it seems to be less noticable in video which makes me think it is probably within spec. Just want to confirm there is nothing wrong with my copy. I'm a bit worried it might get picked up by internal or external microphones when recording, and besides that it just feels a lot less premium than I was expecting. I never heard any reviewers mention this before buying it.

How does the G2 compares with the Sigma 28-70mm?
@80-80.
@80-80. 3 жыл бұрын
I'm curious too. I guess this lens is a bit sharper at 70mm. But Sigma still has a tad smoother bokeh at 70mm. This has more features, Sigma is smaller.

I asked Dustin the same question. But i tried both of these lenses at the camera store today on my a1. It wasn’t super thorough tests like Dustin would do. But anecdotally, i feel the sigma produced smoother/nicer rendering at the cost of a bit of sharpness. Plus the sigma is a bit lighter. But we’ll see if Dustin chimes in, as his testing is more thorough.

Ok. I take back what i said. Because i bought the sigma 28-70, then gave it back lol. I got the Tamron 28-75 g2 in its place. And I’m blown away. Even wide open, it’s so sharp, it feels like a prime lens! And it’s rendering quality is sublime. I have no idea what Tamron did here, but it’s amazing. And as someone who generally shoots with prime lenses, that’s really high praise.

For Canon EOS R - Landscape photography on a tripod at 24mm. Does it make sense to buy RF 24-70 or RF 24-105 L F4? I know that RF 24-70 is sharper at the corners. Does it have better contrast and color rendition? Does it make sense to spend so much more money on RF 24-70 over RF 24-105 L F4 for landscape at 24mm at F8? Basically, my question is - how big is the difference at 24mm at F8? Will I be able to tell the difference on a processed landscape RAW file on 55 inch LG CX OLED? Thank you.
@DustinAbbottTWI
@DustinAbbottTWI 3 жыл бұрын
Hmmm, for your application I'd probably just go with the 24-105. I don't see the sense of buying an F2.8 lens (and spending the premium) if you don't actually have the need for the wider aperture.

@@DustinAbbottTWI Thank you for the reply! I love your videos - very informative, professional and detailed. You have sold me on the RF 14-35. Unfortunately, Capture One Pro have not released the lens profiles yet. They have only released profiles for the original RF lenses from 2018. I will wait until the summer (my next scuba diving vacation) and I was thinking of buying an Ikelite housing for Canon EOS R and getting the RF 14-35. However, those housings are huge and expensive. Not very travel friendly. I did some underwater photography back in 2006- 2010 with Canon Powershot Pro 1. I might just get the Sony RX VA instead for the underwater.
