And another great review, with plethora of details and facts. Thank you Dustin ! For those who think this lens does not go wide enough (first, think again but globally, then) the 17-28 f/2.8 will be the best complement. Resulting in a 17 to 75 mm focal range at f/2.8 all the way... for 1800 USD/Euro (or so). How about it ? Just got a copy of the 28-75 G2. Didn't think I wanted it, but I'm a little disillusioned with my Sony 24-105mm f4 at the long end, and the sale price made it worth the chance, $699. Color me impressed. This is a great lens. Contrast and sharpness are exceptional, and the bokeh is gorgeous. It even beats the Sony 24-70mm GM2 in sharpness overall, IMO. I have access to a 24-70 GM2 and did a landscape comparison on my A7r5. The Sony might have been a hair sharper in the center at 100%, but not by much if at all. Very close. No contrast advantage to the Sony either. Where they differ, at least in my testing, is the Tamron is tack center-sharp in the broad midframe all the way out to the edge, but then falls apart a bit in the very extremes. The Sony GM2 is good in the midframe, but not quite center level sharp, like the Tamron, and does better at the extreme edges and corners. For me then, I, shockingly, prefer the Tamron. Even though I shoot primarily landscapes, I'll take extraordinary midframe performance of the Tamron to the Sony's excellent extreme edge/corner performance. I also compared it to my Voigtlander 65mm f2 APO, and the results were basically the same. The Voigt again might have been just a hair sharper in the center, but the Tamron still bested it, at least at wider apertures in the midframe. Color and contrast were basically on par as well. I never expected this good a performance out of this lens. And as for my 24-105mm, it's also very sharp in the center (maybe a hair less sharp than the other lenses mentioned here), but the Tamron at 75mm cropped in is sharper than the Sony 24-105 at 105mm. So I gain an f2.8 aperture and don't even lose any telephoto reach. The 24mm on the other hand is a sacrifice, but I can live with it. I can stitch a panorama if I need to, or bring my 20mm f1.8 G or 16-35mm f4 PZ along.

@@DustinAbbottTWI Definitely =) What I would really point out (due to personal experience with other lenses) is the focus ring. This one is right on point. It's smooth, while giving you enough resistance for precise control. Definitely a lot better than, for example, Sony's 24-105 G which is very smooth but doesn't have any resistance to it. Which lens would you recommend for street photography and traveling, this Tamron or the Sigma 24-70? Price difference is only 90€. I guess that the Sigma has better build quality, but it`s 300g heavier... How do corner sharpness and esp. autofocus speed compare? Sure, the main difference is 24 vs 28mm, but that`s not very important for me.
@DustinAbbottTWI2 жыл бұрын
I'm not sure the Sigma actually has better build quality than the G2; it's quite nice and thoroughly weather sealed. The Tamron has the faster AF speed, though the Sigma is still very good. Less distortion on the G2 at 28mm vs 24mm on the Sigma, though if you zoom into 28mm the Sigma would be closer. I personally prefer the Tamron, but if you don't have another wide angle option, the Sigma might be the better choice due to that extra 4mm of width (which DOES make a difference)

Im debating getting the tamron 28-75 g2 or sigma 24-70 dg dn. The price difference is marginal. It looks like sigma is better in sharpness but I dont know if I would be happy to carry all that weight around...
@DustinAbbottTWI3 жыл бұрын
The Sigma isn't actually sharper. I would say the primary reason to choose the Sigma is if going to 24mm is a big priority for you. Otherwise I would personally go with the Tamron.

@@DustinAbbottTWI what about focusing speeds, is the tamron faster than sigma because of its new linear motor?

Hi Rafael - I don't actually have the Sigma on hand anymore. The Tamron is definitely the sharper lens, though.

I just got the 28-75 g2 at f4.5 the focus motor is loud, is that normal?
@DustinAbbottTWI3 жыл бұрын
It's odd that you report the sound at a particular F-stop. That shouldn't really change the sound or performance of the focus motor. I didn't really notice any focus sound with it.

The measurements you gave out were a bit deceiving because you state them with the barrel extended, but the measurements are for the lens when the barrel is closed. When the barrel is extended the G2 is more than 0.2mm shorter.

I'm not really stating them with the barrel extended - that just happened to be a visual on screen.

I doubt very much that hundred thousands or even millions of people buy these lenses. Most probably the 1st generation lens has been sold somewhere in the 5 figure realm, not more. There are simply not that many people photographing with expensive FF equipment.

The biggest improvement compared to the first generation should be the manufacturing. G1 is made in China, but G2 is made in Japan. That's probably why G2 has better sharpness (especially corners) and build quality.

I took a look at that, and you're right. Manufacturing went back to Japan.
