Thought this was too similar to the 50-400 but the weight difference is pretty huge! 42% weight reduction for 29% less zoom is a great consideration

Yes, and it also makes a case for a 200-600

It's exactly what you said at the start of the video. It's the G2 version of their 70-300, but starting at 50mm and adding VC, VXD motors, and improved controls.

It seems like a blend of the 50-400 and 70-300 to me..we'll see if the 70-300 RXD remains in production. It's a bit lighter and will be cheaper than this new lens.

It's a baby 50-400mm lens.

Ordered this lens for my runway photography. Use a Sony 70-200. Does the job for large shows but for small shows, that 70mm is still cutting off my subjects. So a 300 will help more shots on the longer and the 50 will help when they are closer.

This reduces my 3-lens walkabout kit to a 2-lens kit. I'll be replacing my Tamron 17-28/2.8, Sony 28-60/4.0-5.6 and Tamron 70-300/4.5-6.3 with this new telezoom and a Tamron 20-40/2.8. The 20-40 is also better suited to dance floor shots at events. Yay!

Inasmuch as genre is concerned, I think this is an extremely useful lens for herpetology photography - the photographing of snakes, toads, frogs, lizards, turtles, salamanders, geckos, etc. This is because of the 6x range as well as the half-macro high magnification capabilities.

Does this lens have image quality compatible with high-pixel sensors such as the a7r5?

The 70-300 did very well on my a7RIII, and, according to Dustin Abbott, this one is better, especially at the edges, so I'm ready to assume this will be great on my a7RV.

I just obtained the new Fuji 16-50mm 2.8-4.8, and it is very sharp! If Tamron ever releases this full frame lens for Fuji X, it would be a great match for my Fuji X-H2 which starts at 50mm.

For a full frame sensor, this would be a very useful focal length range, as long as there isn't any vignetting.

Has it been tested on a APS-C camera?

Great review Dave! I think your right when you say most lenses these days are pretty good overall...it's really amazing how all the manufacturers are building good quality lenses and at different price points. I am like you though...50 mm is a focal length that I don't use...personally I think the Tamron 28-200 is a better buy than this lens. Thanks again for the concise review, very much appreciate your work bringing these reviews to the photographic community!

I don't much care for 50mm, either. But, I'll replace my 70-300 with this one as Dustin Abbott has told me it's substantially better around the edges at the wide end. Field curvature on the 70-300 had me using it as a 100-300.

I don’t know maybe it just me, but it seemed like this review was rushed pretty quickly through. Very interesting with Tamron is doing here. There’s definitely a audience for this sort of lens. And I love that we’re seeing stuff that we’ve never seen before.

All usual "reviewers" didn't bother at all, perhaps there aren't any perks from Tamron.

I didn't feel it was "rushed". I found it pleasantly efficient. It was a quick and thorough description of key features with enough comments about IQ to prompt further research. For an exhaustive test review, I'd rather read than watch a video anyway.
