Hello Scott, if shooting a landscape image at the 200 end what would the sweet spot aperture for this lens. I thank you for your time in advance ...
@ScottDumas7 жыл бұрын
Hi! I'm guessing you'll be looking mostly for corner to corner sharpness in those landscape shots, and you can get a very solid image at 2.8. Stopping down to f4 will give you a little more sharpness maybe but nothing huge, so I'd say the sweet spot in practical usage would just depend on what you want for depth of field. Chromatic aberration isn't an issue and vignette can be corrected easily in post as well. :)
@allandavies11877 жыл бұрын
Hello Scott, let me get this right when we use a wide angle lens we attempt to shoot with an aperture between f/11 to 16. But with the this Tamron 70 -200 mm end set at 200mm set it at an aperture of f/2.8 for a front to back sharpness for a sharp landscape image. Is that correct Scott ???
@ScottDumas7 жыл бұрын
Allan Davies never said front to back sharpness and that’s not what you originally asked. Front to back sharpness will depend on the distance of your subject and won’t be specific to this lens, but true for any 200mm lens. The “sweet spot” of a lens usually refers to the best aperture for its optimal sharpness. Depth of field (front to back sharpness) isn’t really related to the sweet spot. Depending on the scene you’re shooting front to back sharpness is probably near impossible at 200mm anyway, (unless everything in your scene is relatively far)

Hi, i want to buy canon 09d anf this tamron lens being normal photographer. So it is good for me ?
@ScottDumas4 жыл бұрын
This is a great lens for sure. On a crop sensor camera like the 90d, it will be cropped to the center of the image so effectively the 70-200mm becomes like a 112-320mm. If that's a little long for you, you could also consider Tamrons's 24-70mm f2.8 (which would be effectively a 38-112mm). The Tamron lenses work very very close to as well as the Canon versions though, sometimes even out performing them depending on the generation, but cost a lot less. I'd highly recommend them :)

Randy Ruiz Thanks so much! :) I would personally recommend the Tamron- it's a seriously amazing lens physically and optically. My biggest complaint is those switches (get switched off easily when carrying on a strap at your side) but there are a handful of workarounds for that. You won't be disappointed!

Hello what happens if you use a 2x extender,is the quality of the image´s good and also the autofocus will it preform the same? Thanks
@ScottDumas7 жыл бұрын
Hi! I didn't have a chance to test the extenders with this lens (only with the 150-600) but I can pretty much guarantee both the IQ and AF will suffer at least some. I imagine it would still be useable though if you really need the extra reach, however I wouldn't count on the autofocus for subjects with a lot of movement.
@spillebeenkenny71207 жыл бұрын
Thanks,i want to use this lens for nature photography and on trips....do you have a alternative for this lens?
@ScottDumas7 жыл бұрын
For a 70-200 I'd definitely recommend this one. If you're looking for something longer, I've never used it myself but heard great things about the Canon 100-400mm. If you're not sure you need the extra reach you could get away with the 70-200 and cropping depending on the body you're using, or use it together with an APS-C body to get more "reach" with the crop factor.

Honestly, both haha... although the 24-70 is probably more useful for street and events compared to the 70-200. For portraits I'd like something a little longer than 70mm though, personally, and the 24-105 may be a good all around lens. Not the widest aperture, but it can kind of do it all.

Hi Scott. Thank you for this review. I had the opportunity to test Tamron 70-200 f/2.8 G2 (on Canon 6D) and compare to Canon 70-200 f/2.8 IS II. Their AF motor speed are at the same level, but I notice that Tamron every time need extra 0.3-0.5 of a second to confirm focus (focus locking). Have you also notice this issue?
@ScottDumas7 жыл бұрын
Hi! Thank you for watching! I will soon be posting another video specifically about AF and/or include the information in my final review (I haven't decided if it's worth making a separate video or not haha). I did find pretty much exactly the same thing as you though- there was a slight hesitation at the end with the Tamron that caused an extra fraction of a second compared to the Canon which just locked on straight away.
@loicvdw1127 жыл бұрын
That is great to hear Scott! I am actually in doubt between the Canon and the Tamron. I am based in Europe, and here the price difference isn't that big (2.100 euro's vs 1.600 euro's). Because I do a lot of sports photography I think it is a no brainer to get a new grey market 70-200 IS II for 1.670 euro's from Hong Kong?
@ScottDumas7 жыл бұрын
Loïc van de Walle That's a really tough one haha... I guess it comes down to how you feel about buying grey market. I got my Canon used and love it- testing the tracking speed (video coming soon) I found that the Canon worked better on my mark IV. I'm a little bit surprised though because other people seem to be having no issues at all with using the Tamron for action/sports. I think it will definitely just come down to how you feel about grey market, but that would be a great price for the IS II.
7 жыл бұрын
Scott, I was also suprised. I also notice that some people report no issues with focus locking (no hesitation). Maybe we just get defective copy?
@ScottDumas7 жыл бұрын
I wonder... my lens was perfect as far as accuracy and consistency so it doesn't seem like it could be defective... I'm curious, which body did you use it on? Someone told me that they heard there were issues with the 5D IV in particular, especially related to the AI servo mode. I'm actually super confused what to say about it so still deciding how to put the video together haha. On one hand it gave no issues in One Shot mode, and many others seem to have no problems with AI Servo/tracking... but there was a visible difference when used side by side with the Canon... maybe I'm just being too hard on it? I'll get some sample images together and probably just put it out there and let the viewers decide without much comment myself on that point.

I heard that the canon between 160 mm and 200 mm is sharper. Do you have a chance to test it?
@ScottDumas7 жыл бұрын
gokhan tek Through reviewing the lens I shot a lot at 70mm and 200mm (and some in between of course) and I did find that in some cases, especially on the long end, the Canon was sharper but I also found that it wasn't noticeable enough to make a difference. The Tamron is wonderfully sharp throughout the range, the difference in sharpness with the Canon is in no way worth the extra money (unless you want the Canon for other reasons as well). I wouldn't get too caught up on very small %'s of difference here and there- they're both winners :) Also- the files available for download are all full resolution so you can zoom into 100% and see if the Tamron is sharp enough for you. They're jpegs but if you import them into lightroom or check the file info you should be able to see the focal length. A lot of the files have the focal length in the name as well. Hope that helps!

Although the sharpness and CA etc are comparable, why you may buy a Canon vs. Tamron is weather sealing and reliability. I accidentally dropped my 70-200 on wet flooded concrete and after simple cloth drying the lens continued to work without me panicking on an out of state project. So keep that on your radar if you shoot professional shit happens. That's why I keep investing in Canon glass reliable and excellent customer support.

@ScottDumas6 жыл бұрын
The Canon is definitely a bit sharper, but only barely. I think after a certain point it just becomes overkill and the Tamron is definitely much beyond the "very sharp" level. The Canon is no doubt still an incredible lens, and the one that I own myself, but it really is only side by side at 100% where you can tell the difference. Looking at the Tamron only I don't think anyone would ever think it needs to be sharper than it is, so in that respect they're comparable. Not equal, but more than close enough.

If you can’t see a difference you need to go and see an optician. I have watched loads of reviews over several years and you are the only one to basically slate the cannon. There is only one benefit to the Tameron and that is price. You totally negate the build structure and materials used in both and the optical specs. You also don’t even mention industry opinion. Hay ho each to their own and as you said this was NOT a true technical review.
@ScottDumas7 жыл бұрын
I'm not sure what reviews you've watched "over several years" because the Tamron was only released less than a year ago. Of what I've seen several, if not almost all people who reviewed the G2 Tamron say optically it was nearly on the same level. If you've had and used both I would imagine you'd see the same. As this was an IQ video, of course I did not mention the build structure or materials, I have a separate video on that topic and on top of that only time will tell how well the Tamron lasts. As I mention in my build quality video, there's no doubt the Canon is time tested and proved to last and it is the lens I own myself after all. I never claimed otherwise. Even IF the one benefit is price, if everything else is within small percentages of difference, there are a LOT of people who would rather save the money (or have no choice but to go with the lower priced lens). I don't think anyone who cares about industry standard is going to be watching KZbin reviews to decide if a Tamron or Canon is the better lens, I think you're missing the audience for this one. I also never claimed it was a scientific review, but it was a fair side by side comparison based on how the IQ stacks up in real world situations. All the images were shown and even available to download so people can make their own judgements, but I don't think I misled anyone with this, sorry if you felt it wasn't an adequate review (of IQ).

Sherab, i own a d850 nikon. This means i cannot use the canon lens, however to say the price is the only reason you would buy is laughable. The Tamron lens is very well balanced lens. i have taken some incredible photos. I have used it professionally for publications in London. It performs to professional standards, from someone who shoots for a living not a youtube aggressor!
