Been a Tamron 70-200 fanboy for quite sometime, it is as good as it's mentioned in this video and more, however there are serious quality issues with Tamron that no video I'm aware of mentioned! for example Internal Dust Issue, this was one of my major concern as i had it in multiple lenses in the first year, while the factory replaced the lens, the second lens had exactly the same issue, when i moved to G2 i thought this would solve the problem however it is still there... I do not have this issue with Nikkor Lenses. Having Said the above I will always buy Tamron for 70-200 and Nikkor for 24-70, 14-24 and Sigma for 50 & 85mm as i'm not a full time photographer, and i'm not intending to go to war with my gear :-)

Thank you for the video. But I am struggling with the Tamron. I have a Nikon D500 with Tamron 70-200 f2.8 G2 and my pics are soft. I have noticed that @ f/3.5 f4 it gets a little better but my use will be indoors and I need to shoot as wide open as possible f2.8 so what is the use of having a 2.8 if I can't use it. Any opinions?

I haven't heard from these comaprisons, when VC is being used, is there glitch in the view finder when the shutter is pressed for focus? WHich then engages the VC....?

I have the G2 and am coming from the VR1. I shoot little league baseball with this and the 200-500mm 5.6. I am finding that the Tammy does not track focus as well. The scene is a player running towards me from the plate to 1st base. The 200-500mm tracks better than the Tammy, The Tammy is much sharper than the VR1, especially at 200mm 2.8. Can you compare focus acquisition and tracking?

I believe that sports are the perfect market to select first party lenses. Sports is one of the most demanding subjects, where compatibility is paramount. There is a reason we see sport's pros with lenses like the Canon and Nikon super telephotos, price notwithstanding. The other issue s reach: is better than the VR2 but far worse than the Nikon 70-200mm f2.8E

pt10981 I used my G2 lens with the Nikon D500 and there isn't an issue with autos on basketball or baseball ⚾️

Hi, there. Did you have to deal with the micro AF adjustments for the Tamron? That is always a benefit when dealing with Nikon AF-S lenses.

Hey, good video. I'm glad to finally see an actual review/comparison with the Tamron g2 and Im looking forward to a full review. That being said, I, as a viewer, have some ideas to make your videos better. First off, I think you could do well to be a bit more animated as you're doing your thing. The video just felt a little monotoned and lacked a little energy, in my opinion. Secondly, When you were doing your pre-computer bit, your head never moved and was in a position that I felt was awkward the entire time. Third, some of your lighting wasn't so great, but I realize that is probably due to not having any budget for additional lighting. Otherwise, I really liked the content of the video. Oh, one more thing, You never said what camera you were doing your tests on and some people (me included) like to know what your gear setup is (i.e. camera, lighting, flash, etc.). Thanks for the video!

Hmmm. motion blur? The Speedlight is going to freeze motion at an insanely short duration, probably something like 1/8000 of a second. Not having a tripod or having VR off would not affect this. Maybe the Nikon wasn't perfectly focused.

I have Nikon 70-200mm f/2.8 VRI. Should i change it to Tamron 70-200mm f/2.8 G2 lens? Nikon at 200m and f/2.8 is soft. I have D7200.

You need to change your body to the D500! I had the 7200 and the focus and ISO capability of the D500 makes life so much easier!!

When i shake my unattached lens, i feel something is moving inside. also i can hear a slight movement sound (very little, but still audible) is it ok ?

Actually I ordered a replacement and even the second copy has the same sound. The sound is more audible when I keep the filter-side down (Camera side up) and try to gently tilt/move the lens by say around 5-10 cms. If I hear from upclose, then I can hear a sound of something kinda rattling inside (maybe its the movement / play to accommodate for the Vibration Control VC) I dont know what it is, but I am preety nervous about it.... and Wanted to check if that's normal. Ive tried to use it, it focuses and works perfectly fine...just that this minor rattling sound is bothering me. I dont know If I should send it back or keep it. Ive already sent the first one... :(

LOL, that would be the VR assembly, if the lens has no power it is free to move. You need a non-VR lens, that will sort the rattle.

It's probably OK. I mean, my Fuji lenses have made a noise when shaken, even out of the box, all of them. So I wouldn't worry about it. I'd say as long as it's sharp, AF Works and VR/VC works, you shouldn't worry about it. If one of those isn't up to par, then maybe have it looked at.

Put the lenses on a tripod and use mirror lockup..Then we realy now whos the sharpest lens.

(I know this is a year old...) I would agree, but you also need to factor in real world usage too. Many people may not be shooting off a tripod with mirror lock-up. The tripd does give the best opportunity to see which one is sharpest, but you need to keep in mind real world use and performance (and also viewing distance). For the money, the Tamron does a good job. I personally wish it wasn't so dark in rendering images but that can be fixed in post since it does seem to be a fairly consistent "issue" with the lens versus the Nikon.

3:14 looks just like misfocus, on nikon side skin under the chin is sharper, but face blurier, it's either your fault or models moving after focusing was done or need focus micro adjustment

Naga Gandham other channels have. Other than the focus breathing, the Tamron holds up no problem.

Good video but, l own a Tamron 70-200 pre G2 and being generous in saying I’ve used it 20 times. Focus ring is now so stiff motor is unable to turn it. Repair tech claims demand for repair parts have drained the system of them and unable to fix it. I totally believe Tamron lenses take great pictures (love my 24-70) but have concerns about their durability now...

Then Tamron should do the right thing and exchange it for you with a new or refurbished one with the balance of the factory warranty. I'm looking to order one and hopefully I don't run into this issue. The biggest quality issue (aside from focus and sharpness variances between copies) is that the lens may be more susceptible to ingesting dust because of how the zoom mechanism works and how the innards can be exposed inside the camera (so if there is any dust in your camera, it can get transfer to the lens.)

Sorry for saying this....but heres a suggestion...... in your review you stated that the tamron has a better vc than nikon...than you are adding that the tamron has a bit better IQ than the nikon....and than you conclude that the nikon isnt worth 800 more bucks....that sure is an understatement.....you mean the other way round.....the tamron is 800 bucks more worth than the nikor.....;-)

The problem is the usual... Focus breathing. To me is insulting and deceiving to sell a lens stating 200mm when at normal portrait distances it is way short of 200mm

shaolin95 people need to stop complaining about focus breathing. I read this everywhere over and over again. The main purpose of this lens is action that is at least 30 feet away from you. Taking portraits is an additional nice to have option which this lens offers to some extend. The focus breathing is much lens pronounced in the FL version and at what cost, it is listed for about 1000 dollars more compared to the VR2. For that money you can get the VR2 and an dedicated 135mm portrait lens which will take better portraits than the next 10 futured versions of the 70-200mm...

If you think about it, every lens is focus breathing if you compare it to a Macro lens. Focus breathing is a concern for video shooters who don't want drastic breathing when they are shooting video changing focus. For stills, it's really not a problem, and if you want maximum magnification, then macro lenses will make every other lens look like a problem according to your rational idea of "focus breathing".

In reality, focus breathing isn't that much of an issue, unless you're getting really close (like less than 2m) from a subject and you start cutting off the subject in the frame because of focus breathing. As long as you're aware of it being an "issue" you can adjust your composition and technique to compensate. Plus, I don't think most people (viewers) are going to care if it's 200mm or "202mm" or 195mm (they probably won't be able to tell) unless you start cutting off parts of your subject because of this. For macro, absolutely, Focus breathing can be an issue, so that might be one of the few exceptions. I mean this lens focus breathes less than the Canon version (go view Matt Granger's comparison).
