@sboudreaux27 not even close!! It wasnt until the these top 30 that it was even known who Kelly was, & Tamyra was a frontrunner until she got eliminated. Kelly was closest to her at that time, but took over after Tamyra's exit.

She was a surprise hit than they probably didn’t start seriously considering her as a potential winner until top 9 night. It was honestly bizarre producer buffoonery because Respect was very obviously either the 2nd/1st best semifinal performance competing with Tamyra’s, and they really wanted to pretend that she was just “good” lol

That's the way to open up a show... With your BEST. And Tamyra Gray in Season One was American Idols Best. It's a shame promoters and marketers and those behind the scenes dollar folks made the choices they made... But perhaps if they had not they wouldn't have a season 14 or is it 15 to look forward too. (I stopped watching after season 5)

She was UNDOUBTEDLY one of the best there. She definitely should've been the one in the finals. HOWEVER, America got it right voting Kelly as the winner. As great as Tamyra is, I don't think her voice was as great as Kelly's. Just listen to the strength of Kelly's voice when she did Respect. Her voice is stronger than Tamyra's, I think. So final 2? Definately Tamyra and Kelly. The best? Kelly, in my honest opinion.
