In the middle part of this concerto (14:00, 15:05), both the strings and Guzheng have a melody which is based a northern China folk song "little cabbage". Little cabbage is the nickname of a little girl who lived a very hard life.

Lan Phuong

Fantastic music and performance. It reminds me my in Northwest China, a very hard one. What really surprised me is the harmony between Chinese traditional music instrument and western ones, between Zheng which normally used in Southern China and for local music of South China and the northern style of the music. Wonderful concerto!

Concerto for String orchestra and Guzheng (Zheng) by Tan Dun
One interesting thing is that the mijority of the Chinese music played on KZbin is Chinese folk music, which is not at all " classical" music in western sense.

Most of this is basically just a different arrangement of Tan Dun's piece for Kronos Quartet with Wu Man, "Ghost Opera." I'm not mad, it's a banger piece, and it's cool to see it in a different version - just weird that this isn't acknowledged anywhere in the description.

In my opinion, this concerto could be composed more towards the Chinese folk pentatonic way, so we can fully expose the beauty of the instrument, Guzeng. This concerto is made too new and lost a lot of beauty of the Guzeng.
@sneddypie4 жыл бұрын
this is still a really beautiful concerto, if you ask me
@jasonxusaxophone4 жыл бұрын
The Classical Nerd of Classical Hi, yes I agree this is a really beautiful concerto. But we have to keep in mind that the beauty of Guzeng is the pentatonic Chinese folk style. That type of style can reveal this instrument’s beauty better. Also, I am not blaming on anything, I am just leaving my views and suggestions.

@@jasonxusaxophone So why don't you compose one and stop being a douche?
@jasonxusaxophone4 жыл бұрын
kenhimurabr Hi, I am sorry if anyone is feeling offended, I apologize. But if you go and translate some of the Chinese comments down below, you will understand us. Chinese people we always have a better understanding of guzheng. When it is composed in the classical western way, we can easily tell the beauty that have lost in guzheng. Thank you!
@sneddypie4 жыл бұрын
Xu Jason just because one aspect of beauty has been lost in this concerto, does not mean it does not reveal a new understanding of the beauty the guzheng can behold.
