There are actually new tapes being manufactured, but for an older machine like this I'd recommend browsing an auction site such as eBay, where there are usually lots of sellers selling used tapes. Or do a google search for 'buy reel to reel tape' which seems to bring up several links.

I have the model 5 with the recorder box and I'm having a hard time trying to figure out how to hook it to my system? It has two outputs that use four banana connectors
@ricardlupus4 жыл бұрын
From left to right, the output connections on the model 5 are lower track ground, lower track signal, upper track ground, upper track signal. If you take a stereo RCA-RCA cable, and cut the RCA connectors off one end, when you remove the insulation, the 'ground' is the shield around the inner core, and the inner core is the signal, for both the left and right cable in the pair. Strip the insulation and wire the two shields and two inner cores to four banana connectors and you're good to go.

I have the 3B model. It works mechanically but does not produce sound. Brought it to be repaired but was told it would cost more to analyze and fix than it was worth...got it for $25 w/ a box of old reels of music from the 50's &60's. I'd ship it anywhere for reasonable repair costs at this point...I really want to hear this beautiful recorder play! Thanks.

If you want it fixed, get it fixed. If it costs more than it's worth, who cares?

Thanks. I am employing the loudspeaker output, yes. And do have a banana 4 mm connector, because I am a dinosaurium keeping its belongings, since I was a teen.

You mentioned you replaced the drive-belt on this machine. I got the same machine here with an worn-out drive belt with way too low traction. When it first spins it's mostly OK, but you have to manually turn the reel a turn to get it going (belt slips due to the torque). Do you have any information on where you found the replacement belt?

I used an o-ring, available from a supplier of hydraulic seals, with a diameter of 189 millimeters (thickness 3 mm). The length isn't terribly critical, if you get a smaller one you can always stretch it a bit before mounting. O-rings aren't entirely ideal as they're made of a harder rubber than the original belt, and they will fail in time, but they're fairly cheap and not too hard to find.

Thanks! I will look into this. We just noticed a worse problem with our machine though; the rubber layer on the support/tension wheel for the governor-pin is coming apart. The wheel is very uneven, and gets stuck very easily, putting very much tension on the tape. We found a couple of hifi repairshops in town that does vintage stuff as well, so I guess we will have a talk with one of them.

I usually use o-rings available from a hydraulic seals vendor; 189 mm diameter with a cross section of 3 mm do fine, although the length is not critical. Replacement is not hard, you have to remove the knobs, tape head covers and top plate to get at the belt, which runs in figure-8 fashion between pulleys on the reel tables.

Hi Ricard , nice demo, i just found one of these at a garage sale, the schematic on the back is damaged and i wonder if you have this and i could get a copy ? The tubes are missing so i need to find new ones ( this is the easy part as i have access to a old warehouse with theese)
@ricardlupus6 жыл бұрын
A good place to check for Tandberg documentation is sportsbil.com/tandberg/; the schematics for the 2T can be found at sportsbil.com/tandberg/TB 2T skjema.pdf (youtube messes up the link because the file name has spaces in it) . Incidentally, the tube lineup is EF804, ECC83 (12AX7), EL84 (6BQ5), EM71 with the first and last of these usually being the hardest to source.

I do have one, and want to know how to take signal to a computer: Through the speaker output? I cannot connect to preamplifier, the connector does not pug and I do not know if it is an output or an inpout.
@ricardlupus10 жыл бұрын
Yes, on these early Tandbergs there is no preamp out, and you need to use the loudspeaker output. The connector is a 4mm banana connector; you'll probably have to get a cable with the appropriate connector for your computer at one end, and put on the banana connectors at the other end yourself. Banana connectors should be readily available from stores that sell electronics components.

Hi. Do you still have this player? I have one and have a couple of questions.
@ricardlupus2 жыл бұрын
No I no longer have this particular one, but do I have other Tandbergs of slightly later vintage.

Thanks for your upload. Where do you get drive belts and is it hard to replace?
