@jeremycarroll4515 жыл бұрын
Ok.. A couple of things about these. They are not HI FI speakers. They are full-range studio monitors. They are not meant to make for a pleasurable listening experience. They are designed to accurately reflect what is being put into them, unlike hi-fi speakers, which are designed to flatter the music. In other words, unlike hi-fi speakers, they are precision measuring instruments. Also, they are designed to be soffit-mounted in the wall, not to be used floor standing. I am a mastering engineer and I use these as my reference monitors in my studio. I would never listen to commercially released music on them as all they will do is highlight every tonal error, harshness and tonal imbalance in the music. This is what they are designed to do. Comparing them with hi-fi speakers is like comparing a family hatchback with an off-road 4x4. They're not the same thing and you'll go very wrong if you try and confuse the two! As regards the price, in order to get a set of reference studio monitors of a similar specification, you would be looking at a price of £8,000-£10,000.

It is important that the listener is on the same horizontal plane as the two tweers. Only when you have the same distance to the twin tweeters will high tones sound right. So you can tilt them backwards, or raise them until your ears enter the narrow treble zone. Below or above they sound dead. They also benefit of more powerful amplifiers due to their low sensitivity. 150-200W. I have a pair myself, but I rarely use them now.

A few people are correct , they need to be off the floor and they are too close together which makes dynamics and Imaging suffer. And they are studio monitor s which have a flat sound but off the floor and spread out like the heco' s then you would have heard a big difference. Heco sounded lighter and smaller plus there midrange not as rich and natural as the tanbergs to me. Don't get me wrong the heco's are awesome speakers , but you must experiment more with the tanbergs but it's to late you sold them correct? Eight to twelve inches off the floor and spread out like the other speakers believe me would have made a huge difference believe me You would have kept them and the caps are fine just placement means a lot on some big box type speakers. I love your videos I'm a big fan of yours for years now.

believe me the hecos where sounding so much better but the microphones distance from the hecos was longer as from the tandbergs. The heco's came with 2 sort of spikes, normal spikes and small rubber tops. I use the small rubber tops because i move them often. I don't like spikes on speakers for the reason I move them often. The difference in sound would not be much when i would have placed the tandbergs in stands. My cantons also dont have spikes, just flat on the floor.

I agree with you that this beautiful old monitors (I have a pair of my selves) needs to be recapped. Bur when you say that it's and easy job I think I need to correct you. Soldering is easy, but you have to carefully find capacitors that matches the specs and most of all they need to be of high quality. I ended up with capacitors to an amount of 400 dollar. It is not a cheep solution to recap old Tandberg Studio Monitors, but its worth it!
@erikjensen56972 жыл бұрын
Sorry but this is the most IDIOTIC review I hawe ever seen .. Tandberg Studio Monitor is from 1977. They are 45 years old, and you think they sound like new! The capacitors are finished long time ago and the speaker will off course sound bad without any life and dynamic. Its a miracle they working! How can you then make a review ? REPLACE THE CAPS - not easy and not cheap, because their are many capacitors to replace - its a huge and advanced cross over filter. Olso the midrange and tweeter switches need to be cleaned carefull and and connectors on each loudspeaker units must be cleaned - or better soldered. The speaker is not designed to stand directly on the floor - are you kidding! You will get heavy bass and midrange and tweeter sound will disappear. Only after you have fix this you can make a review about the sound And I can already tell you they sound like hi-fi speaker in the absolute high end class worth 10.000 euro! You "reference" speaker will sound like cheap toy..

These Tandbergs are not designed for Hi-Fi enjoyment. These are reference speakers and made for analysis, broadcast control-rooms and recording-studio's. There's no need to change anything since they do what they are supposed to do; sounding as accurate, neutral and flat as possible. In this big size you wont find a contemporary equivalent. As a musician I own a pair myself. Superb lows and high frequencies, and overall low distortion. At first I was disappointed with a lot of CD's until I found out these were badly mastered. They do sound terrible if the recording is meh! These are telling you the truth; garbage in, garbage out! I consider to sell them cause I downsized my recording setup.

Older amps like that were always a little bass-heavy to make up for the inefficiencies in the speakers. Still, these kind of things have their place for those who like the warmer 'vintage' sound with vinyl, etc. I agree, I would not pay so much, either! It may just be branding as 'Studio Monitor' to sound sophisticated and stylish for the time, e.g. 'top-of-the-range' / 'high-end'..although I'm sure they were not exactly a cheap thing (as reflected in the build quality). Today, they are simply too old and will need a lot of work in the hands of an enthusiast. You made the right decision to sell.

Oldgamingfart No sorry but they're setup wrong is all they have to be off the floor and spread out for better imaging and dynamics these are a special speaker and are true to the studio monitor sound flat and neutral , if they were setup correct you would have heard a big difference believe me , setup is crucial with monitor speakers and speakers in general.
@artax74385 жыл бұрын
vintage stereo wish you would have experimented with them more like spreading them out and off the floor because they are monitors and are critical about placement , that would have changed the whole sound of the speaker I know for a fact you would have liked them a whole lot better. That midrange alone would have opened up and bass would have been more transparent and the spreading out would have opened up imaging and dynamics for sure. Plus they have turnovers to tailor the sound to your room. Aw man your going to miss out on the sweet sound spot they have that's why there so sought after but you live and learn , love your channel
@Oldgamingfart5 жыл бұрын
Sure, when they were new..but now it's over forty years later and they probably have out of spec tolerances with potential (multiple) component failure. No history of how they've been used or even looked after. I'd pass them along..much nicer modern things around for the money.
