Brilliant performance of one of the giants of the piano quintet repertoire! Taneyev was a master of counterpoint, and the first movement is evidence of that mastery. The slow intoduction gives us the main element of the whole work. When the action really gets going, the main theme is prominent, but when the second theme comes in, it is the inversion of the first. The slow movement is a passacaglia of great weight. The finale is wild, with a theme that is almost a twelve-tone row. But then the second theme of the first movement comes back as a glorious hymn, and finally the bells of St. Petersburg close the piece with enthusiasm!

A new acquaintance to me, this Sergej Tanejev, played by wonderful musicians. Let me say that so far it is the third movement that captures me the most.

I love how the second theme of the first movement comes back as a hymn in the finale.

Also note how the theme of the third movement is actually introduced at the end of the previous movement!
