Tang Soo Do Belts (and how to tie one...THE RIGHT WAY!)

Tang Soo Do and other martial arts systems normally use the colored belt system to identify the skill level of students. Many schools take this too far with a rainbow of colors and stripes on top of that. In American Tang Soo Do (Chuck Norris system pre-1990), it's... 1. White 2. Yellow 3. Purple 4. Orange 5. 8th Blue 6. 7th Blue 7. 6th Green 8. 5th Green 9. 4th Green 10. 3rd Red 11. 2nd Red 12. 1st Red Originally, according to Norris' student manual (1973), yellow, purple and orange were junior belts and there were two levels of white belt. Not sure when when the belt system switched to the current version, but I think it might have occurred around late 1973 when Norris broke away from the Moo Duk Kwan and founded the National Tang Soo Do Congress. Which is also around the same time Norris made changes to the forms [and created a few new ones].

The belt system was White, Orange, Green, Brown, Red, Dark Blue, and black. We also had half collor belts in between (orange green, green brown, ect). There was also a "Tiny Tigers" and "Little Dragons" system, but i dont remember those. I wasnt very good and never got past brown belt. Had to quit because it got in the way of school time. My school was Gihai, in Aruba. Some times i wish i can go back, but I'm not as flexible anymore.

Hello Adam, that's alot of belts 😂. Never compare yourself to others, you be the best YOU can be and I'm sure you were pretty good to get to brown belt. It's never too late to start back again regardless of your flexibility or condition. You can begin training on your own, there are plenty of videos to help you remember where you left off and refresh your memory. You do what you are able to do and make it YOUR Tang Soo Do according to your abilities, limitations, and preferences. Even if you train alone at home, which is what I do now.

I’m part of the PKSA System our belts are White yellow ,yellow orange stripe, Orange, Orange green stripe, Green, Green stripe one, Green stripe two, red, red stripe 1, red stripe 2, red stripe 3, red

So in my last school white ,yellow,orange, green,red,red1stripe ,red2stripe,red3strip,chodanbo black and I've always tie my belt the way u did in the video now I'm a2nd dan and there writing I have to flip one side in the not or do different style make loos and pull through but I dont like how the belt falls

That's crazy. I think the way I show in the video is the right way. It's also a military thing with me I'm sure 😁, if you wear any uniform it should look neat and professional.

I am 13 and I used to do Karate. I'm sure what type but it was really fun. I came across Tang Soo Do and I wanted to try it . Do you think I should go for it?

Hi Kyleigh! I would definitely go for it! If you haven't already, be sure you and your parents observe a class first. If a school doesn't allow it, find another one. If they do, pay attention to the instructor and how they teach, but pay more attention to the students and how good and how disciplined they are. Depending on why you are training (competition, fitness, Self-Defense, etc.) Be sure the school is a good fit for you. There are many differences in Tang Soo Do, some schools teach very old school and traditionally, like myself, and others are more in line with Soo Bahk Do or Tae Kwon Do. I love Tang Soo Do. Hi Dale! I'm not familiar with PKSA and had to Google it. A large organization and a lot of schools! Ah, GM Kang Uk Lee is your Grandmaster. I own his book on Tang Soo Do and used it to let my students use it as a quick reference for forms. The belt systems are different between almost all schools and organizations. I have always stayed with the system used when I was taught in Korea (White, Blue, Red, Black). Students stay at each belt longer, but then they focus on developing skill rather than testing for the next belt. I wish you continued success in your training!

Hi Christina! If I'm correct, all Soo Bahk Do dojang fall under the US Soo Bahk Do Moo Duk Kwan Federation. Are those the Federation belt colors or can there be differences between schools? Which belt are you?
