Oh fer goodness sakes, they are playing it live. It is just that most of the sounds are stored in patch memory, so they sound identical to the album (they *are* identical to the album!) and many of the parts are sequenced, so again, they are the same as the album. Chris is switching in and out sequences. You can clearly see Johanness playing chords with his hands. There are several bits where it is not identical to the album (which is would be if they were simply miming to it).
@robandrews218310 жыл бұрын
I think the "huge modular" that NeonMusic talked about is actually Chris's drum computer although there may be a sequencer setup in there too. As for patch memory - it was only at around this time (1981 / 1982) that User-programmable memory was emerging in electronic equipment. I suspect that half of Chris's time is spent programming the next drum and sequencer combination.

So what? This is a great composition. Tangerine Dream is just unequaled.
@TryptychUK5 жыл бұрын
I don't believe it. The lead line at 5:04 is from a PPG wave 2.2. (I know this for a fact) Chris is playing bass on a Prophet 5, Johannes is doing the stab chords on a JP8 and Edgar is playing pad chords on the PPG 360B NOBODY is playing that line. It's coming off DAT.
@pco20045 жыл бұрын
@@TryptychUK Yes echo that. This is some Milli Vanilli Justin Bieber mime shit. What a shame because people paid good money for this show.

As much as I love the band and what they have done for electronic music, this is embarrassing. You can line up this video and the album track, compensate for the slight speed deviation due to the multiple transfers this video file went through and it will run in perfect sync, note for note, sound for sound, for 8 minutes straight, even in the free sections which they often used to bridge between sequenced parts. You really see a couple of guys miming to the tape they brought.

IS THERE A VERSION ANYWHERE WITHOUT THAT GLITCH ON 3:17 ??
@marktrevett8813 жыл бұрын
K3C - yeah, it's not there on the album/cd. But seriously, the glitch is probably from someone's VHS home recording off the telly by the looks of it and they used a cheapo tape to record it onto and the tape obviously had a dropout defect on it caused by a speck of dust or iron oxide, which temporarily disrupted the sync signal recorded on the tape right at that point you've highlighted.

What is Chris Franke doing in the first few minutes of the piece?
@marktrevett8813 жыл бұрын
Rene - he's "grandstanding", he's playing to the crowd to make himself look "busy" otherwise if he didn't, he'd just be stood there motionless, pressing a button occasionally to load in the next memory patch to set the sequencer on its next pattern. He's doing it so the crowd don't think "Hey! he's not playing that synth, it's just playing itself! What a rip-off!"

Doesn't anyone think it weird how the girl doing the talky bits, sounds EXACTLY the same as on the studio album, even down to the unique inflections in her voice? I always suspected TDs supposed 'live' performances that I went to and paid good money for in the late 70s and early 80s, were a load of crap - they obviously all just mimed and played along to the actual album playing from a reel to reel tape player hidden away somewhere backstage, connected to the sound system. I mean, just watch Chris Franke - who the hell fiddles with the controls of a sequencer when its actually supposedly running live at a gig??? You'd only do that if you were composing in the studio, to get things 'just right'. I love their music and all that but I hate them for hoodwinking their fans like they obviously did back then (and probably still do now, especially with digital sound reproduction). It's all complete BS!

Adir Caesar Sorry, but this is very disappointing. This is not a live show. This is tweaking random knobs to the exact soundtrack of the album. And believe me, I’ve heard “Exit” hundreds of times since I was 17, and today I’m 54. This is the exact album soundtrack. The exact. It is just a playback. I feel very embarrassed for them. This group inspired me in my teens to buy my first synth, and again, believe me, in order to make this music, you dont have to tweak and press so many buttons... The sync with the playback went good on 4:16 (He is pressing the button with such a pathos...) but it wasnt on time on 4:48... Simply embarrassing.
