It was truly heroic of all of you to rescue this mother. If she had died, her calf would also probably not have survived without her. They have a similar life span as humans so you almost certainly gave the world many more whales in the future by rescuing this mother. God bless you for caring.

I suspect that in the mother's mind, she was trying to protect her calf from a perceived threat by trying to move away. They are incredibly intelligent animals, far more intelligent than what many humans realise

Many whales PANIC when humans show up - and who'd blame them. Some rescues clearly show the whale slowing and even stopping when they know we are trying to help. It shows the intelligence of animals (whales, rays, sharks even and elephants etc etc) when they actually come TO us for help.

Calvin Chu sadly, I recently saw a tangled blue whale in Sri Lanka, we attempted a rescue which because of other badly behaved whale watching boats failed! I asked the captain of our boat if he sees whales tangled in fishing line and he said he often does. Sadly humanity is treating the seas as a giant garbage dump. Well done to these guys for saving this humpback beauty each one of them is so precious!
