Yo! At like 3:00 min, Emma approaches him and his hand is down and he doesn’t even attempt to try to redirect her and she just comes up, not to investigate, but to be by him. The amount of trust both ways is just amazing. Awesome. And obviously she has to keep moving to breath. I wonder how she would like it if he swam next to her. I wonder if it it would be threatening or territorial behavior she would display or like “hey friend, let’s go for a walk”.

What a sweet, beautiful shark. I wish we would appreciate the animal world so much more rather than kill them right off the bat. It's one thing to have to kill an animal you come upon suddenly where you are forced to defend your life because the animal is trying to kill you. But are you aware there are CANNED ANIMAL HUNTS where fake men shoot trapped wild animals whose furs and heads, etc. they will take to a taxidermist to be stuffed so they can brag to their friends. Sometimes I think that such men have impulses to show off because they are afraid that their sexual parts are too small. Killing makes them feel more manly. (Watch the last quarter of the movie “The Misfits” with Marilyn Monroe. It delivers a powerful, insightful look at man’s relationship with animals. It's not your typical MM type movie; it depicts the ugly and ignorant side of the human race.) Right NOW, there are beautiful, powerful animals trapped in fake jungles, unaware they are about to be shot and killed for absolutely NO REASON. This is happening TODAY and every day in the USA. This is unconscionable; in the impoverished minds of these people, killing and being loud and obnoxious is cool. You see them every day. They play loud music and drive their neighbors crazy...they ride around on motorcycles with broken mufflers, they cut you off on the road and give you the finger. These ignorant people think they look cool. Instead, they look like morons.

From what I gather, most sharks see humans as inedible and may very well flee from them if they know what they are (which I guess in all technicality is predators, as people do sometimes fish for sharks) and only might bite them thinking they're a more palatable animal like a seal or turtle. I guess Emma would be one of the few who says "Jim is a nice human, not a mindless eating machine."

Meanwhile, this shark is doing news reports on his interactions with humans: "Most of us sharks think of humans as mindless, delicious snacks that don't swim well. But after spending years attempting to befriend one, I have discovered that they actually have feelings. And given enough time, they will begin to trust you. It is unclear whether or not this indicates actual "intelligence", but they are certainly sentient creatures, and not just snacks."

Agreed! When I was little I used to piss scared of sharks, specifically Great Whites, because of the movies and tv shows. I even got happy when Killer Whales, Offshore, ate them. However, when I was 6 or 7 years old, I gradually realized I was wrong and sharks are not what Hollywood made them out to be. They’re heavily misunderstood, like orca/dolphin behavior, and deserve recognition and kindness. Don’t get me wrong Killer Whales are my fav animals of all time, but sharks are a strong second. I really took a strong liking towards Great White Sharks, Lemon Sharks, and Whale Sharks. Depressing how Hollywood makes them out to be ain’t it?

I might be completely wrong but if remember correctly I believe there was a study confirming that getting rubbed on the head releases dopamine, serotonin, and oxytocin, (or the "bonding hormone") in the brain responsible for emotions relating to comfort and safety, in the same way that eating releases chemicals responsible for calming us down, and sharks in particular are extremely sensitive to both of these chemical responses as well. TL:DR: headpats makes happy emotion go weeeee :>

Old girl Emma can probably identify your specific heartbeat, she knows it is her favorite diver. Nope, not sentient. A wild animal that if it gets hungry enough, will have no issue of taking a few bites out of this man's hide. Animals do have excellent memories though. These particular sharks have a good memory of this diver, and at this time he is not on the menu or looking to do them harm. But cut this man's arm or leg and let the blood flow in the water, we will see if their instinct to feed overcomes their good memory of hook removal. That dude up in Alaska, forgot his name, got real close and friendly with the Kodiak brown bears. Finally, he ended up as lunch for one of them. Never underestimate and forget the power these creatures have.

@@TheJimprez There is no science that shows that plants have a brain :) Brain is uniquely an animal feature. Plants do have sense of their surroundings though, and they are much more capable then we give them credit of course - so there's no need to animalise them. I would not say them having societies though, for it is also a loaded term and people would think that they have individuals who are communicating, but they are rather having the boundary between individual and communal not existing on the level that we, animals, do. No need to add fantasies to an already magical thing that is nature :)
@jcoludar

Emotions precede sentience. Very likely every animal has emotions - they are extremely useful. All the bogus notion that insects/lobsters have no pain is not scientific and makes no sense evolutionary. Being able to do maths is very likely uniquely human as well as many other "intelligent" things, but feeling emotions and being able to relate is wide-spread in animals. It is not impossible that single celled animals feel something of that sorts. Though ofc having a brain helps with that a lot :)

The insane amount of trust these two have in each other. The fact Jim is comfortable to let Emma approach and boop him square in the face with her snout, that close to her mouth is amazing, and that Emma is so comfortable letting her guard down and exposing her most vital body parts (such as her nose and fins) to him is unbelievable. Its beautiful and breathtaking to see.

we really just have to relearn all the wrong things we've been taught. Animals aren't mindless killers... the same way we have great relationships with dogs, that could easily kill us, we can have with other animals too. Ive seen it with whales, sharks, tigers, lions, hyenas, gorilla's lol ... really anything once you build the relationship.

Human friendships with sea creatures always makes me awestruck and emotional. We’re so foreign to one another, and as humans, we exploit them constantly… but there are always sea creatures that want to be friends and spend time with us. It’s just so heartwarming

Hard to overstate this, but seeing Emmas eyes as Jim petted her made me rewind and rewatch it several times because almost all of the shark footage I've ever seen has show shark eyes as cold and unfeeling (or lidded, as they do just prior to biting) but seeing Emmas eyes look around the way they did in this video made me think of sharks in a completely different way; i.e. not as something just to be feared and avoided, but as potentially warm and loving creatures. In the same way that most people don't think of cows or chickens as being loving, despite there being an abundance of footage of them playing games and snuggling up to their human friends....
