Tangmere at Carlisle:
First Day of the 2024 Steam Season
among the regular trains
27 January 24
A bright and sunny day but with the inevitable Carlisle wind!
Plenty of passenger action from Avanti, TransPennine, ScotRail and Northern. Some delays on northbound WCML services at first due apparently to an obstruction on the line somewhere to the north of Lancaster.
We also see the Tesco northbound train and southbound Malcolm intermodal.
The Winter Cumbrian Mountain Express suffered from delays and problems. A late departure from Euston behind Les Ross/Peter Pan was echoed all along the northbound journey with a 60 minute late arrival in Carlisle.
West Coast provided a train with central door locking - nicely painted Mark 2 stock with Tangmere at the head and 47746 Chris Fudge at the rear from Carnforth. They took the late-departing train over the S&C to Preston where the Winter CME was handed over to the class 86.
Whilst the excursion arrived at Preston 46 minutes late, a points failure there caused a further 152 minutes of delay! The train was terminated at Crewe, presumably to avoid getting caught up in the Saturday night planned closures for engineering works.
Not the best of starts for the steam season.
