There was no 'uniting India' because the concept of the modern nation of India wasn't there. There were many small kingdoms and some large empires. It is about the rivalry between the Maratha Empire and the Mughal empire. No one was fighting for India, both were fighting for their empire.

@@chat.choosey I don't think your point contradicts mine. What I meant that India was just a geographical entity back then, not a political one. And every powerful empire wanted to gain control over the region. At that time the Mughals and the Marashtra was the two biggest players. For example, at that time Bengal i.e. modern Bangladesh, WB, and parts of Bihar and Odisha was under the rule of Nawabs, and was practically a vassal to the Mughals. Maratha troops often raided and pillaged the villages of this region to loot crops to feed their army. If they cared about 'fellow countrymen' they would not have done so. But as I said, the concept wasn't there. So, I think whatever Chatrapati might have had thought, it didn't really worked out.
