TANIHATA / KUMIKO OF WATER FLOW

"Kumiko refers to a woodworking technique where wood is intricately assembled into geometric patterns without using nails. It involves carving grooves, holes, and mortises into finely split wood, and then manually assembling each piece.
Approximately 1400 years ago, along with the introduction of Buddhism from the continent, tools and techniques necessary for temple construction also spread to Japan. The origins of kumiko can be traced back to that time, evolving gradually through the delicate sensibilities of the Japanese people and continuing to be passed down to modern times.
The artwork in this video is installed at the Disaster Prevention and Crisis Management Center in the central district of Toyama Prefecture. It represents water, symbolizing Toyama Prefecture, flowing from the mountains and gathering minerals abundant in Toyama Bay. Fish, shaped from Japanese paper, symbolize those gathering around the rich minerals of the bay. This piece was created with the wish to preserve Toyama's beautiful nature for people living 50 or 100 years from now."
