I didn’t really mind Jonathan’s goofy looking tears at the end, but I’m realizing that maybe it would’ve hit harder if they did a closeup, hand-drawn animated of his face instead, making it look reminiscent of the kind of emotional face he’d make in the manga. They spent a fair amount of that animation on Tanjiro and his moves, which is great, but they didn’t do as much with Jonathan in that regard.

I think it’s because Tanjiro doesn’t have a lot of good sprites so they made up for it with the hand drawn bits while Jonathan has some amazing MUGEN sprites to base it on.

It wasn’t exactly well made.(It’s a bit hard to find the sprites I’m talking about a since the JUS styled sprites are way more common for Tanjiro now. I believe it would've made for a more natural set-up and ending if Tanjiro revealed the crucial fact of Nezuko being his sister before the fight began (instead of asking Jojo if he has brain damage and viewing him as a puppy, that doesn't feel in-character) but have Jonathan state how he knows the pain of losing a sibling to such a curse and insist on putting her down as he won't make exceptions on his quest to destroy Dio and the stone mask, showing the contrast between the two in how Jonathan has generally less sympathy for the undead, only vowing to spare and protect her after realizing the respect he gained for Tanjiro throughout the battle. I don't know if that scenario would make them avoid making Jonathan cry like a Steven Universe character (which the DB wiki says might reference Esidisi???) but it would've made it a tad bit less silly at least.

not gonna lie I really liked the ending part with Johnathan reaching his hand out for Nezuko, her hesitate and then pull away with the ambiance and quick color change. it really feels like for a moment she wanted to do it but the emotions came to her and she refused, and is probably the most slept on yet impactful moment the show has had for a long time

I really like that we see a visible representation of the speed difference mattering. Often times in Death Battle they're like "this person was clearly faster and stronger!" but it's never really demonstrated. Tanjiro sees the thread and has expert predictions on the way his enemies are going to move, so why did he miss the vital spot? Simple: Jonathan is just faster.

I loved seeing that too. I think that's why the moment before the death in Alucard vs Dio works so well is because they show us truly how little Alucard could do if Dio wanted to end the fight then and there with his time stop. Here Tanjiro makes the right plays but Johnathan is simply faster than he is so he is able to avoid the blow to his lung by a couple inches.

Johnathan wasn't able to do anything against Dio's space ripper stingy eyes except put his arms up. Tanjiro meanwhile can fully dodge consecutive attack from demons who can move faster than the eye can percieve.

This doesn't effect the battle but, nerd rant coming up, What they said about the breathing techniques actually summoning elements is false, the Mangaka even said it herself, and before anyone tries to bring up examples let me already go ahead and answer them. 1. Rengoku's flame tiger, he didn't actually summon a tiger, in the manga he's moving forward while slashing in a shape of a tiger opening its mouth. 2. In terms of people like kaigaku and Kokushibo, they infuse their demon blood into their breathing techniques which allows them to have unnatural abilities. 3. And in terms of Zenitsu being able to move fast, he states that thunder breathers focus their total concentration into their legs so that they can have super human speed. The anime just spiced up all of the breathing with special effects, which is completely fine, but I just don't want people to have the wrong information. A lot of the crazy stuff you see them do is thanks to Total Concentration. In the manga a breathing technique is constantly conveyed as them just slashing their sword in a certain type of way, thank you for reading this. Loved this battle

At first I was skeptical about this episode, because I didn't think they'd use Jonathan so close to using DIO last season (and also because I was hoping for Kira vs Adachi to be the next JoJo matchup) But I was pleasantly surprised with how much I enjoyed the fight, well everything past Tanjiro using Hinokami Kagura. The voiceacting is great, there is a fair amount of clever strategy used in the fight which I like because Tanjiro is quite a strategic fighter and Jonathan, while not on the level of Joseph, is also strategic and quick to adapt. The music is great as usual coming from Therewolf and the fight kept both characters true to themselves (Jonathan being an honorable gentle giant, and Tanjiro being the protective older brother he is) Probably my favorite from this season so far as well, though Harley vs Jinx is a very close second

Death Battle is really getting better with the puppet pixel style imo this was a great fight. Yeah I know most people would've liked more build up but I think it worked well enough. Jonathan telling Tanjiro that he would protect Nezuko no matter what and Tanjiro smiling knowing his sister will be in good hands, it was heartwarming to see.

This episode was decent but Tanjiro really felt sidelined in the analysis like they didn’t even mention his hard skull or individually go over his techniques. Like the whole point of breathing styles is having varied forms and Sun Breathing is literally made to make combos with it just seems too integral to leave out. And with his 24 forms I see no way Hamon is more versatile either but I’m just avid on Tanjiro winning so whatever.

Like the energy used to manipulate those leaves is the same energy used to shut down the body just used differently. It’s all about conduction and infusing Hamon energy with Hamon. Tanjiro has completely different moves for each form some of which basically stock pile.

@@DarthSears bruh Tanjiro is way stronger and realistically faster than him and they dont even use his most powerful forms and feats... like literally if you read the manga youd know Jonaathan couldnt win if he had his most powerful form. Tanjiro is cassually faster than lightning, like Zenitsu cassually blitzed lightning and he wasnt even using his lightning breathing cuz that makes him massively faster. And Tanjiro scales to multi-city block lvl in AP, while atmost Jonathan is large building lvl. its EXTEMELY debateable that Jonathan is light speed anyways if even Dios main body in Part 3 isnt even anywhere near implied to be as fast as his Stand, just comparable in strength if anything.

Everything past the analysis and preview parts, this episode was phenomenal. So many banger highlights. Jonathan punching Tanjiro's Water Breathing, Jonathan pulling out a tree, attacking Tanjiro with it and then, throwing it at Tanjiro who proceeds to fucking annihilate it with Hinokami Kagura. Just so fucking raw. Then that brief pause in the fight showing Tanjiro's better strategic mind. After which he goes full Episode 19 on Jonathan that was beautifully animated. Also, I liked how they showed us that yes Jonathan did indeed barely dodge the stab by 2 inches. Thank you DB for that clarification. Then the true highlight being the kill we all know and love. The ending as well. I feel like if they got more time and effort into refining the Water Breathing and fixing some jank, this episode couldve rivaled the great sprite battles of S8. This is already a Thawne Vs Black in terms of raw passion put into the ideas. If only it couldve gotten a DioCard level animation quality. Amazing 9/10 Ah shit wait, the track isnt called Hinokami Overdrive. 0/10. "Oh wait, he's going for my lungs!"

I liked this battle after the sneak peak footage. More fighting would be awesome and the ending tears were wonky, but I've seen much worse. The character focuses were on point and most of the voice lines were perfect. I prefer the focus on calcs on the side with the objective feat as the main focus. in the analysis

You know what the best thing about this fight is? If we don't look at this fight as a death battle, but as "just" a battle, then after Jonathan realizes his mistake with f*cking up Tanjiro, he would be able to heal him with Hamon! Even if he wouldn't be able to heal him completly, he would be able to patch Tanjiro up into a state where he wouldn't die in the near future, so he and Nezuko can get him some help. To my knowledge, this is the first Death Battle where the victor could canonically save the loser after the finishing blow (Sunlight Yellow Overdrive) was dealt, and would 100% do so, because of the type of person they are. That makes it one of the best ones in my opinion.

Can someone please explain the ice feat? I'm having a hard time understanding how making a bunch of ice coralates with the ability to hit things hard. Seems to me he was using his voodoo demon magic to summon ice. Is the power from him being able to lift/throw it, or from tanjiro being able to destroy it or what?

@@danielsniff6405 I can understand that it's confusing since you're comparing chemistry and physics and you are putting a scientific application on what is essentially magic, but ice conjuration requires freezing nitrogen air plus reaching the fusion energy of frozen water. Maniuplating states of matter is always generally gonna require more energy output than a physical hit that only takes into account mommentum, velocity, mass etc. The Weiss vsbattle analysis goes into good detail into this, much better than the random numbers they threw at you in this battle.

Why people are talking about Johnathan having light speed reflexes when he has no feats to back it up. First of all, Dio does not have light speed reaction time or movement, he relies solely on The World to deal with Star Platinum as he is unable to take nor dodge the hits even when he sees them coming. As for Johnathan, he has gotten hit both times by Dio's Space Ripper Stinger Eyes that are no where near light speed. And what about Tanjiro's attack power. Tanjiro, in the first part of the story, cut the head off a demon whose neck was stronger than the boulder he cut in half. That demon had only eaten 50 humans, compare that to the upper moons who have lived for centuries and eaten thousands of humans who are exponentially more powerful and durable than that, beings Tanjiro was able to defeat/cleave through. Johnathan couldn't just block those attacks since hamon doesn't provide any extra durability, just a boost in strenght. Not to mention Tanjiros sword that is made from a special material that is able to cut through the necks of upper moon demons while Johnathan's sword doesn't have any special properties. What's even more exasperating is that death battle made up a tecnique Johnathan has never shown have the finesse to do. He's not clever enough like Joseph to come up with that on the fly and only has the basics of hamon down. Hamon users (even quick learning ones like Joseph) have to endure intense training in order to master hamon to the extent death battle is portraying.

For me, this episode was rather 'meh' and a lot of what they were going for felt a little flat, this review even pointing out some things I didn't notice beforehand like how the water effect just looks like a solid wall, like Tangiro has a massive streamer on his sword. I think part of what took down the quality for me is the analysis felt disrespectful. Not to a huge degree like how they talk about Michelangelo but there was just this sense that they didn't care like calling Tanjiro's stuff 'Katana Magic' or framing Johnathan's dad adopting Dio as if he knew how awful he was from the get go when I am pretty sure he didn't and he was just adopting the child of the man who saved him. Just really came off as them viewing this as a generic anime fight between two generic anime protagonists. Maybe I am reading it wrong but I get the same emotion listening to them talking about the characters as when I hear you say "Tanjiro Demon Slayer" or people saying 'Sans Undertale', just comes off as "This thing I am referencing is a joke to me at best". The ending bit also failed to impress because they made it needlessly goofy and the only reason it happened is because both characters were idiots. Why would Johnathan think Nezuko is one of Dio's minions? She had that bamboo thing in her mouth and seemed pretty non threatening in the animation, I'd understand if her eyes were red and she was barring sharp teeth but in the animation she just looked like a normal girl and why didn't Tanjiro open with him saying she's his sister? Guy thinks you're under the sway of a monster so you're protecting her, so explaining that she is family would probably get him off your back, or at least allow for a better reason to fight, Johnathan understands now why he's protecting her but feels that there is no hope for the undead so he's not deterred so instead of Johnathan being an idiot, he's still fighting because every monster he's seen has been a corrupted, monsterous form of the people they use to be so its reasonable to assume Nezuko would be the same, that makes sense to me. Then the ending where they have stupid streaming tears takes away all the emotion for me. Apparently its a references to Esidisi and that just annoys me more because I hate when Death Battle just puts in references at random for no reason. They have Kakkaishi doing the Thousand Years of Pain on Obi-Wan for no reason (guess he always tries to finger his opponents?), they have Miles doing the Shoulder Touch on Static (why was he flirting with Static..?) and now they have Johnathan act like a character he's never met because...reference? So because Death Battle felt the need to shoehorn in a needless Jojo reference, it killed off any emotion I may have felt and the fact that he was a complete idiot who murdered a dude for protecting family, Nezuko would be justified in tearing him to shred and not taking his help. While it may be albeist, I could see why Tanjiro would think something is up with Johnathan, he just seemed like some crazy idiot. As for Jojo in Death Battle, ever since DIO vs Alucard I am starting to find it annoying. Maybe its because I watched Hamon Beat's 'Debunking Araki Forgots' series but Death Battle comes off as the kind of people who would have those misconceptions about the series. I mean in the DIO episode they said he won in the end when he didn't, his 'Heaven' didn't occur, the Universe just reset back to normal but now Pucci doesn't exist. That and them somehow getting DIO at 15x the Speed of Light when Jotaro was under it in his battle (which makes sense when one of the most dangerous Stands was one that was AT the speed of light and Silver Chariot couldn't react to it) just makes me think they're overestimating Jojo characters now, going off of misconceptions instead of actually researching the series properly. Honestly its the same feeling I got in Link vs Cloud with their poor research on Link, just makes me wary of another Zelda or Jojo matchup because I suspect some HUGE misinformation to be present. This fight was meh, I can't say anything too bad, just some gripes like them seeming to disrespect the two series they were talking about and yet another stupid set up for a fight but I can't think of anything that really stood out to me like the last two with Harley talking to Jinx's rocket and failing to pull a Joker or Zatana being as entertaining as she should be throughout her fight. Just came across as a generic anime battle to me, which isn't helped because the Death Battle seemed to treat it that way too.

What about the sword magic? I cant really find any concrete proof but i have never seen it clarified, that its purely a visual choice and it isnt actually there. I know my "evidence" is rather weak but seeing how nothing ever burned from the fire of sunbreathing or become wet from water blade it has to count for something, also no one ever makes a big deal out of them. Like has any one ever said: "Wow how does a human make fire!" or something like that.

I remember seeing a comment that states its more akin to an illusion or something like that. As through out the series the attacks have made demons and other demon slayers mention sounds or feelings similar to the elements the breathing style represents. Like tanjirou’s slash being compared to a gentle drizzle, or zenitsu’s slash having the sound of roaring thunder. Its not that they create the elements, but make illusions, that can be heard, felt or seen. Idk if thats a cannon explanation but its the explanation I think makes the most sense

I liked the fight itself but I felt like they high balled Jonathan and low balled Tanjiro. I mean they scaled Jonathan to Joseph post training, which is ridiculous. Also most of Tanjiros ability’s weren’t either mentions or used, like false rainbow or the fact that he can somewhat use Zenitsus thunder breathing, and he can even predict what his enemy is going to do giving him the reaction time of a Hashira, wow I went on a rant there, sorry about that
