This brings back some memories. I used to build bulk tanks something like this but with baffles (and some without) in them. We built bulk tanks for many applications like peanut butter, acids, water to asphalt. We even built heated bulk tanks as well.

For all the commenters regarding baffles: Food grade and Chemical grade tank trailers do no have baffles for one very simple reason, how do you clean the back of the baffle? Tank trailers are cleaned internally by what amounts to a gyroscopic dishwasher head being lowered into the hatch. They are programmed to hit every spot inside the tank during their cycle so if there were baffles inside, the backs of the baffles and everything beyond the baffle would not be properly cleaned, causing product contamination from whatever was in the trailer last. Most tanks are much larger than they need to be so they are more versatile and not limited to only one product and every product has its own weight. Example for food grade tanker: Water 10 lbs per imperial gallon (8 lbs per US gallon) Canola oil, approximately 7 lbs per gallon Glucose, approximately 13 lbs per gallon Many chemicals have different weights as well so you want to be able to carry your maximum weight whenever and whatever you load. As for how to drive with a partially loaded tanker, very carefully, but that's a different story.

I had to do road stabalizer a couple times. I would load the base material in the city and then was supposed to take the trailer elsewhere to load the balance of the load ( I think it wasd about a 50/50 mix, but I'm fuzzy now...was a long time ago ) with water from a fire hydrant. The trailers had no baffles. I'm just glad it was summer when we did that work and there was no ice.

@sysghost Baffles are designed for specific types of liquid. This type of container is most likely for dry product or very dense products like wax. It is extremely rare to ever fill a trailer to capacity as few liquids are light enough to fill a trailer and be under legal weight. Also the fact that they state it is filled from the top would point to dry product as many liquids are loaded from the bottom including petroleum products like gasoline and diesel.

@imautuber444 Not really. The trailer may be designed to be either completely full, or completely empty. If the tank is completely full, there is no sloshing of liquid.

@imautuber444 Not needed if the tank is "filled to the brim" However, partially filled tanks would be better off with the baffles. I guess these kinds of tank trailers rarely/never runs partially filled. It's filled up or not at all.

A most interesting idea! Hiding tons of of a "product" inside the tank, surrounded by some nasty liquid. The "product" will of course be protected by a liquid barrier. Noone will ever suspect a thing. Everyone will look through the truck, but not the trailer. Even if they do look in the trailer tank, all they will find is some nasty liquid that noone wants to handle.

Baffles are not aloud in food grade tanks, as the baffle joints and welds are prone to contamination. This being an insulated trailer, it appears to be food grade, guessing dairy because of stainless steel.

Food product containers can not have baffles as the flanges of these baffles will trap contamination that is extremely difficult to disinfect.

Trailers that haul bulk animal feed or dry fertilizer are NOT tank trailers. You'd think a channel like How it's Made would get that part right. Dry bulk trailers are as different from a liquid tank trailer as a dry van is from a double drop.
@bigjimne6 жыл бұрын
Twisted Pixel cousin runs liquid fertilizer in a tank and uncle ran liquid feed in a non baffled tank. Pretty sure that's what they were talking about.
@twistedpixel25586 жыл бұрын
Big Jim "Liquid feed" isn't feed that you would feed straight to cattle. It's a liquid mineral or protein additive that you'd use as a supplement to get your feed mix to the right protein/fat content/mineral that you need. I know it's called liquid feed but that's about the same as calling corn gluten pellets or wheat mids animal feed. They are used IN animal feed but no one feeds them by themselves as animal feed.
@bigjimne6 жыл бұрын
Twisted Pixel I know that. But to the casual viewer it makes sense why they call it that.

Baffles should be mandatory in all tankers. Imagine having a 3/4 loads & going downhill - all the weight will shift to the front, not to mention braking and acceleration occurances. In case there are precautions for content interaction with baffles, then the whole tank should be made of separate sections (subtanks). Just saying...
@jesusnthedaisychain7 жыл бұрын
I'm pretty certain that they just left out the part about welding in the baffles. I think it's standard that baffles are put in.

Tankers for food product can't have baffles cause the're too hard to clean. The drivers have to be very skilled and know how and where to take their vehicle. You can very easily wreck the tanker if you dont drive it correctly.
