The most fascinating thing I found about the Rooikat was that you could switch off the motor and run on battery power for a while....very quiet, sure as hell couldn't hear one of those sneaking up on you from inside a noisy tank!

The Ratel was the worlds first wheeled APC. (1974) Copied to this day. The G6 was also the first of such a beast.

I like how they focus on mobility in their vehicles, not to mention that they look cool as fuck too. It makes me wonder if they would work well countering the guerrilla desert warfare seen in the middle east.

The sanctions led to them developing their own armaments industry and in addition to making hardware more suited to African conditions enabled them to make money exporting product and earning foreign currency too.So much for sanctions!

And there we were 25 odd years ago laughing at ourselves and taking the mickey out of our "weather force". Damn now you realise how good the training really was. And how good the tech was - to the point that you realise how many American lives could have been saved if they had the mine-protected Buffel or our SAPS Caspir. Our "old" SA mine-protected vehicles would be perfect for these modern conflict zones where the biggest threats are IEDs.

Im from SA, and proud to say that the south african military was the best during apartheid, since it was abolished (im not saying we should have kept it, NOT AT ALL) weve just broken down our military so much that our police force is better armed. Nowadays we dont need a military force, we try to have good relations with everyone, so we dont have a need for one. Our air force is stuck without fuel, lol a lot of people say our airforce consists of a couple harvards with greandes in the cockpit xD

The town of Pomfret used to have running water. The fleeing Angolans probably didn't much care that they couldn't vote and truthfully, if you researched what they were running from, you probably would understand. In Africa you can not have a lot of hardware mainly because of the terrain, you get desert here and 50km further there is wetlands. All the USA, Asia and European hardware have too many parts that has to be serviced and checked. Everything brakes in Africa.....hahahha.

Yes good war machines,but war itself is something' a normal person can not wish,I fought as a guerrilla or freedom fighter from the age of seventeen lucky enough my stay in was short as I was injured in combat and I had to be withdrawn again when I recovered the ceasefire was signed. When I returned home 1989 I was 19 years but those few years almost turned me into a non human as I trusted noone till later years.

only problem with the Armored car was the petrol chev engines ,gave lots of troubles in 76/77. but a war that never of should of taken place, so much money waisted that could of been used for better things, the whole war was just a propaganda story to justify the war to the outside world, because if apartheid was never introduced then blacks would not of left the country go get trained in Russia and other countries and come back to fight the Sa government,,
