What does a tank crew do? 1. Lift heavy stuff. 2. Curse while lifting heavy stuff. 3. Curse much louder when they bash their head on crap in turret 4. Stink. Because everything on a tank stinks. 5. Clean oil stains.... off the tank, off the tank park, off the tank uniform, off the tank crewman 6. Drink beer. I think that about covers it. -- Cheers from an old American Cavalry corporal [and fellow tank crewman] who patrolled the Inter German Border likely before most of you lads were born. -- Godspeed and stay safe, you lot.

@@melbeasley9762 Truth. I had 5 pairs of boots when I was in... and this was back when we still had to spit-shine our boots. One pair was pristine, un-creased inspection boots. I was a tanker. Work on your upper body strength. While you do have to have (running) endurance and all - tankers need upper body strength to haul (load) the rounds quickly and work with all of the heavy parts on the tank itself. Also, know if you're a loner, tanks aren't for you. The crew is your family. If the crew doesn't work seamlessly, getting home in one piece becomes problematic. Because you have to remember, you are the biggest target on the battlefield - everybody wants to kill you because you are the deadliest thing out there. They make the movies about the special forces but tankers, we kill everything - from helicopters down to those guys that can run 5 min miles, do a thousand press-ups and jump out of airplanes. But I wish you the best and I hope that the unit you end up joining is a good one. Oh, and take care of your knees as well. No one tells you - every time you get off of a tank implies you jumping, usually down to cement or hard ground or something similarly hard .. and you do that a million times and that's hell on your knees.

All things considered, the Challenger 2 Tank will not likely be put into production ever again. If the UK is lucky enough to manufacture a next generation tank that is British designed, perhaps many of the parts should be made in such a way so that they are interchangeable with the Challenger 2. This will help extend the life of the Challenger 2 and to work alongside the next gen tank. Availability of spare parts will be simplified and perhaps more of our foreign allies will hopefully consider buying British made tanks.

@@melbeasley9762 that's strange, the army I was a part of we had standards particularly if you were an nco. I was on Chieftain which had a notriously unreliable engine. Always leaking from somewhere and guaranteed to break down on exercise, allowing the crew time for a couple of beers. They weren't strict on working dress and drinking was normal on exercise but that was 40 years ago back in the Cold War when we were part of the BAOR. I was in B Sqn, 3rd Tp.
