I've harvested my first whitetail deer of the season and now it's time to make use of the hide by skinning and tanning it at home.

For future reference, you can sew up that hole in the hide when it's wet. As it dries, the hide will stretch and essentially seal up that hole, or at the very least make it smaller. Just look up some videos on how to do it, and it will make your hide 1000x better. Also, when softening the tanned hide, the more work you put into, the softer the hide will get, so it isn't uncommon for someone to spend and entire day working a hide, breaking down all of those fibers.

Mr Justin rackley. Crazy to watch you on your journey through life. I have been following you since 2013 or 2014 during the prime of KZbin bass fishing. Back when you were still fishing and guiding lake fork. I prayed for you and your family through you whole surgery and I am stoked to see the full recovery you made and how you are just livin it up bro. Anyway one tip I wanted to suggest to you about breaking up the fibers in the hide is something I have seen done but never done myself and it seemed to work like magic. I have seen guys actually use belt sanders to shred them fibers up. Maybe look into it next time and see if it’s something you may wanna try.

Brain tanning is definitely the way to go every critter on earth come with enough brains in its head to tan its own hide, it produces the whitest and softest hides, ( just remember to wear gloves, to protect you from possible exposure to Cruz Feldts Jakobs disease, the human variant of chronic wasting disease) it's a little bit more labor intensive, then other processes but it's worth it, that hide is just the right size for a dress for Emmy.

Justin that hide really looked pretty good!! I’ve tried tanning stuff when I was younger and it definitely seemed like I literally had to work that hide where I would have thought it would fall apart!! But the more I worked it and the harder I worked it the better it became!! They definitely take a lot more work then a person may think but you definitely can get there as long as you are willing to keep working it and keep working it and it will definitely turn out better then you think it would!! There is a old time trapper in Canada that actually does moose hides and other hides and goes threw the entire proses!! I was very interested in the way he did it to break the hide down!! I would have thought it would tear or destroy the hide but it actually worked really well!! You should see if you can find some of his you tube videos of how he does it and I think that you will definitely be amazed at how he does it and how easy it can be!!! Awesome video buddy and remember keep up all the hard work buddy!!!

Justin, you're a hobby guy so I'd imagine you have a dremel with the little cylindrical sanding attachment. When your rooster starts getting a point to his spurs, just catch him on the roost in the evening and knock the point down to a rounded off nub. It doesn't hurt him, still allows him to keep his spurs for defense and if he ever tries to come at the kids or wife, he won't hurt them. From one Texas chicken owner to another....keep up the good work bud!

I've seen too many guys just take the straps and loins off a deer. You're getting better and better at harvesting your beast mate! My family (and there's a few of us) will eat well off a deer, before we even take the loins and straps into consideration. Stewing will take even the toughest and driest pieces and make them tasty and soft. It's also a very efficient way of getting all of the nutrients from an animal.

A tip for working a hide get a hand crank winch of of a boat trailer and put 1/4 inch cable on it bolt it to the floor or base of a tree or build a 4x4 stand and run the cable high tighten it as tight as you can and work the hide back and forth across the cable its quick and more efficient than using a sapling and is more consistent then working small sections

Tanning is real cool always something I've thought about doing but haven't. You oughta sneak off with one of OSG's swimsuits to pattern from your buckskin. What man wouldn't want to see his lady in a buckini made by his hand from a buck he harvested. Good clearing the air on the artery shot, btw. Some days it's good to be lucky.

really you give your quarters for burger? what about all the roasts and stewmeat? i usually get my steaks roasts and stee or jerkey and still have enough after cleaning the ribs, some neck, legs and any trimmings with tendon and silver to get like 15-20lbs of burger depending on how much stew and neck roasts i want. you should look into a grinder with what most places charge to grind it sometimes makes it cost more than beef. only time i send stuff i would usually grind in is when i want hot dogs made. i do the sausages myself but the dogs and meat stucks from my local place are amazing and totally worth the $2 a lbs to make them.
