Nice video man, I bought that stuff 12 bottles last season did 12 furs last year and they came out great the only thing the Iodized salt is a no no from what I read and I think on the box says that I believe they said it causes fur slippage perhaps in time, not really sure why but This year I will be doing a lot of fur with the rest of that order and using water softener salt you can get a 50 lb bag for like 7 bucks. Thanks for this video always great to see fur being utilized.

how did you find the furs turned out? Where they really stiff? Did you have to break them like crazy?? Thanks for watching.

@@AdamCraigOutdoors Yea so they cured really well, but stiff as can be. I honestly had so many and filming, I just left them half broke, because i was using them as wall hangers in my garage. If you break them fully they will be great nothing pulled either.

Great video . Why do you not just rub the salt from the first salting in and save 1 box of salt ? Just curious .
@AdamCraigOutdoors5 жыл бұрын
you could reuse the salt as long as it is dry salt. You want the salt to pull the moisture out, so any wet or damp salt has done it's job and is not good for the tanning.

I made some beaver mittens for a guy years ago. I think I got $100 for them.....I have a hard time selling them for that little too. I think I'm going to have mine tanned, or try to do it myself. I haven't had very good luck in the past tanning hides. I haven't used the orange bottle stuff though. If yours come out good I'll give it a try! Good video.
@AdamCraigOutdoors5 жыл бұрын
were the hides flexable or did you really have to work them suckers??
@MuskratOutdoors5 жыл бұрын
Adam Craig Outdoors I've tried alum, brain tanning, and chrome. The best was the chrome tan kit, but none turned out very good. They were stiff and no matter how much I worked them, there were hard spots. A double bit axe stuck in a block of firewood with a dull blade up, was good to work the hide over. Rub it over the dull blade like a shoe shine rag. Mine were deer hides. Beaver has a lot of oil that I have heard keeps the tanning chemicals from absorbing very well. Someone told me to wash them in gasoline first, but I never tried a beaver. Bears are the same way. If yours turned out stiff, they look great hooped on a bent willow as a wall hanging.
@ianj.perreault53922 жыл бұрын
Yeah, I did a few with the orange bottle, but seem to work better on thin skin animals, such as fox, fisher, marten, lynx, etc. My beaver turned out stiff but it preserved it and there was no slippage at all, still up on the wall, it’s been 8 years so far, still looks like the day it was finished! Great video!

Thank you so much! One last question~ do I have to stretch the hide when I ten it or is that optional as well?
@rubensanchez81185 жыл бұрын
Todd Bobb Hey there Todd, from what I’ve learned so far (pretty new to tanning hides myself) stretching the hide is for two reasons. After you dry it, the leather typically shrinks and stays hard. You can stretch it and work it until you’ve gotten it as flexible as you want it to be and you can also stretch it to make it more true to actual size. Apart from that, I’m pretty sure you can just tan it and leave it how it is if you don’t care that it’s hard or a little smaller.

@@AdamCraigOutdoors I appreciate you posting this, there's a thousand videos and a hundred articles online warning about blue pelts from iodide, so out of curiosity I tried it and it came out the exact same as non-iodized. They cost the same too, so you might as well buy the cheapest fine grain salt without iodide. But if you're in a pinch or out of time, it's nice to let people know that their iodized salt is still probably 99.9% salt and will have the same result.

i try to stay away from those types of video's. YT hates blood and guts. I think Chris has another channel that shows all the dirty stuff if you are interested. Maybe Chris and I can work together and i can do some skinning and put it up on that channel. Most animals are skinned out the same.
