There are a big holes in Tannoy, i really prefer the Yamaha. Tannoy -> sound like a poor 3.1 logitech... Just listen the voices or the guitars, it's really clear. It's good for modern bass/techno parts only.

@@dafxtone no it's utter bs placement. Trust me you'll pick the Tannoy's in reality. This is pushing people in wrong directions under the disguise of a pretty looking video. And stop with frequency response graphs, just write down the response. This is excactly what I mean...It only makes them look more professional. They are not. Any idiot can record a frequency response.

First, a big compliment for the professional made setup and soundquality! I compared both at home and it was quiet similar to the video here. For me the Tannoy was more musical and more fun, amazing Bass (-;. The Yamaha were a bit more honest, sounded more like a classical Studio Monitor, for me also a bit more "boring". But I can`t say one was better, more like "different". But I was impressed, what good sound you can get for a few hundred Euros/Dollars.

hi, I ordered both of the speakers so i could do my own little compair battle. Both are definitely great speakers, but with completely different acoustic qualities. What really did the trick for me is the warnth of the Tannoys, especially in mid high and high. HS8's are cleaner though, especailly in mid regions. For instance a piano comes through cleaner than on the Tannoys, probably also because of the wide stereo range of the HS8's. Bass imho is definitely better on the Tannoy's than on the Yamaha's: more defined and outright fatter sounds. But i'd say the hi-end of the HS8 is kind of agressive and i think if you listen to them for longer mixing sessions, your ears will get more tired with the Yamaha's than with the Tannoy's. My choice: Tannoy Gold 8

If you want a bright metal sounding tweeter get the yamaha. Coated aluminum tweeters always have that ring to them which pierces through all the frequencies. Some people perceive that as detail. The Tannoys on the other hand use a titanium dome which will always sound more airy than the aluminum because its able to be made thinner so that ring is much higher in the frequency spectrum where you dont hear it. Also the tannoy is horn loaded and from being recorded this close they should have been pointed directly at the mic because the highs are more directional and would come through better in the recording here.
@JoshyLats
@JoshyLats 4 жыл бұрын
Yeah that makes sense. At first I thought the HS8 was more detailed, but after listening more its quite annoying to hear that ring to it that pierces other frequencies. The Tannoy is smoother yet more detailed high frequencies.

Yes, yet what makes me curious is, subjectively my HS8 monitors do not sound as bright, as here in the video - I guess that comes since each perception of the monitor depends on crucial factor - placement and acoustics, which are literally unique and differs with every room / treatment. It is not the performance of the monitor, which is technically determined by its construction, design etc. - and stays still the same, but the perception of the listener in particular conditions. That is where I am afraid we all are left in partial guess here. In particular - my opinion is, that it comes to the specifics of the recording / capture process and of course the room. As much I like these comparisons, which production must be time consuming and pretty technically demanding, I still keep in mind, that there are some significant variables having serious potential to mislead the listener, or give him at least distorted picture about true sound of the box in the end.

The Tannoy's are kicking it while the Yamaha kind of brings maybe a slightly more refined but less full sound as compared to the source track. Listening on a decent set of headphones I would pick the Tannoy's over the Yamaha for most music styles. Going all the way back to the Yamaha NS10 I always thought they sounded kind of flat and a bit harsh. They are both decent for the price but the Tannoy I could listen to all day. Not so much the Yamaha.

My take is the Yamaha is the better speaker for most the tracks and across wider ranger of music. Mids instruments and female voices are far better on the HS8s. However the Rock and hip hop tracks are far better on the tannoy s. If you purely listen to that or want a party speaker go that way. This was a fun matchup!

So conclusion is the Tannoy is the better monitor. You don't want stuff to sound "good"on a studio monitor, you want it to show you the sound unadulterated as much as possible. The Yamaha's flatter all the sources too much, especially in the low mids

You don't know what you are talking about, also the Tannoy Gold8 has an amp that can output 300w. You are never likely to drive them that hard, but in terms of sound it means that the drivers will be less compressed when amplified a fair bit

The low mids in the Gold 8 makes it appear to be more coloured throughout the spectrum, but it's not. I think the Tannoys are a bit better, and I'll tell you why. The Gold 8s low-mid boost makes it sound warmer, but also creates a percetion of being coloured, overall and that isn't the case. If you listen in to the high freqs, you can hear that the Tannoys are also much clearer/detailed and balanced in the mid and high freqs. Don't let the low-mid boost warp your perception. So the reasons why I think the Tannoys are better are: 1 -More detailed mid and high freqs (again, a low-mid boost may fool you into thinking it isn't as detailed as it is, but let your ears zoom in - it is most evident on the rock track). 2 - The EQ on the monitor easily allows you to adjust the low mids to get a more balanced freq response from the low-mids down to the sub freqs. This will immediately remove that coloration. And 3 - Although you cannot hear it in these comparisons, I'm almost certain that the Tannoy's have a much wider sweetspot, due to their dual concentric design.

After reading so many great reviews about the Tannoy Gold 8 speakers all over the internet, I decided to buy them. When I unboxed them, I had a 'Wow' moment! The build quality is impressive-massive and beautiful! They look like they cost four times the price. But then there's the sound... The midrange is very good, and the highs are just okay, though it feels like the frequencies drop off after 16 kHz. The bass, however, is almost non-existent, so weak! I couldn't hear anything below 50Hz. The worst part is the sound limiter. These speakers are advertised as having a 300-watt amplifier and should reach up to 110 dB, but I could only get a maximum of 85 dB before the red light came on. Five seconds later, the volume was automatically cut in half. It feels like the amplifier gets warm and fatigued quickly. In conclusion, I'll stick with my Yamaha HS8 speakers. The Tannoys are being returned to the store. I don't want to sound too harsh, but they feel like cheap speakers in a luxurious, heavy box. I can't recommend them, sorry.

@@udahuda Come and teach me then. I've 3 Grammy's and my set of speakers is $20k, what I've conquered through my 20-year+ career (and obviously that's my fake profile). Obviously there are plenty of people doing marvelous things with low end speakers or even headphones (about 10 years ago I met a genius indian at Mix With The Masters who shocked everyone in the room with his stuff - and he used to use HS80 speakers) Today he no longer owns the HS's - but a much higher-end set of speakers. It's a natural moving when you go forward in your career, the pursuit. I'd NEVER achieve the level of 'refinement' I've reached nowadays in mixing if I regressed to a pair of HS8. You cannot refine what you're not listening to. Would I make a mix with it? Definitely yes. The point is, if all you can have is a pair of HS, go and make music with it. But don't come and talk about it "has proven his legendary sound ❤️" (Secondly, this kind of test is pointless, you're listening through YOUR own transducer - being it a speaker or headphone, so you're judging based on YOUR transducer and its frequency response. How do you want your transducer to represent the frequencies, image, extension, dispersion, that another speaker is capable of?? There is no point at all.)

I worked with HS7's for years and here's my honest take. They are brutal to listen to. If you suck at mixing (as I do lol) they will let you know it. However they translate extremely well. I have a love hate relationship with them. I loved that the mix sounded consistent across multiple sound sources. I hated that I could never get my mixes to sound as good as my reference tracks (mostly on me really). The issue I have with them is I would spend too much time tweaking things especially in the high end. But they will tell you if your mix is good or bad.

@@nvisionbeats I think my issue was more or less the reference tracks I'd work off of were all made o. Some pretty high end stuff In their mixing chains and monitoring. I always had the high trim on mine dialed back a little but I think it's like anything else. Once you hear a nice set of focals it's hard to go back and work on the Yamaha, or once you work on a pair of Yamaha it's hard to go back to something like a krk. But you might also be correct. Hi hats and cymbals were always the hardest part for me to get to sit where I want on the Yamaha. Not really a knock on them at all. I'd never advise against so.eone buying them, but they do have a sound of their own. And they do translate very very well for the price.
@nvisionbeats
@nvisionbeats 2 жыл бұрын
@@jakerain2820 Ok yeah that's interesting thanks for the reply, I suppose if you are referencing those type of tracks then it doesn't really matter because you would be aiming to get yours as bright, but without the reference and yeah with cymbals maybe even vocals it might be an issue but I checked the frequency responses on both of these and the Yamaha's don't look too crazy in the high end. I think it's just the Tannoys have that high bass/low mid boost that would take away from the highs slightly because when I use them they are still very clear and bright. I'm looking to upgrade my home set up from KRK rp5's - want a pretty flat sound but with a decent low end (so I don't have to get a sub). We have the Tannoys at the Studio I work in and i'm not a fan of the high bass / low mid boost colouring the bass but they give a good thump without a subwoofer.
@jakerain2820
@jakerain2820 2 жыл бұрын
@@nvisionbeats the Yamaha are a major upgrade from the krk and they are very flat. I didn't really need a sub with the 7's so I'd doubt you'd need one with the 8's. The 5's I would definitely recommend a sub though. The other thing with the Yamaha is they are rear ported so you'll want to keep them a good distance from a wall. You wouldn't be disappointed with the 7s or 8s. But they will definitely tell you if your mix is good or bad and anytime I moved I'd have to play with my desks location in the room until I could find the sweet spot well enough. They are good monitors for their price. You have to spend a whole lot more to really go up another level that would be noticeable.

In general, sound quality of all tested 8 inch monitors are quite similar, and always out-performed the smaller 7"s or 5"s. So, to pick the "winner" is very difficult! For me, the top 3 is : Gold 8, Eris 8 XT & Hs8, what is your thought?
@Projacked1
@Projacked1 2 жыл бұрын
Gold 8 ....period. The coaxial design is super accurate in the image. Nothing beats that imo. But don't buy 8" if you don't need it. The 7 " version will sound better if the room is not that big.

HS8 . Tannoy sound muffled in comparison. Though HS8 highs are too harsh and tiring. Tannoy have amazing smooth, detailed sound and I love the deeper bass. I could listen to Tannoys for enjoying music but HS8 are better for revealing details.

Sounds like Yamaha has a very V shape calibration,like that of enb or pop music .Hi trebles and base with low mid range making it sound like a hi fi speaker

IMO that would force you to work on the mid range (which is where there meat of the music is) during mixing. Tannoy sounds interesting, without as much detail as the Yams. The Tannoy would make you think you mid range is perfect, only to discover a hole in the mid range when you play your mix on other playback systems.

How does this work? I don't understand this format! Microphone colors sound, video editing software alters sound with encoding, youtube alters sound with compression, soundcard does its magic, (amp alters sound), speakers on receiving end colour sound. Hmmm.

The Tannoys are and that is noted on the graph. I didn't find them lacking in intelligibility though. Just louder in the low mids which as I own a set of older Tannoy dual concentrics I appreciate as I found I tend to have to double check the low mid with my older ones a lot. I often want more and that is the wrong answer. Also I have always found with Yamaha's the upper mids are harsh and I tend to want to duck them a lot to compensate. Everyone has their own requirement they need to trick their brain.

Yamaha HS 8 > Tannoy Gold 8 The Yamaha HS 8 sound way cleaner and better separated through the whole frequency spectrum than the Tannoy Gold 8. The Yamaha HS 8 also seem to have a little better resolution of the sound quality with richer details/more information of the sound - so you might know a bit more, what 's going on in the mids, the lower mids and the bass section - where Tannoy Gold 8 studio monitors rather sound a bit muffled.

Obviously different ears , to me Tannoy sounds better in all means better depth better resolution the fact that they have concentric drivers gives them edge I own HS8 and they lack focus I love them and I'm used to them but it is what it is.

Doesn't really tell me much at all as the Tannoy speakers have more of a bump from 100 to 200 so they sound louder.

HS8 more good at mid freq. But Tannoy is more clear. I don't know the price differences. HS8 put out high frq details of vocals more than original and Tannoy is low in this. But HS8 sound hasn't low freq like tannoy. If I can buy both this and place them together for mixing, I will die with music

@Moonwaterz I used the beyerdynamic iDX 200 iE and the frequency curve is pretty lineair and deep bass. And i agree with top comment. Yes the HS8 sounds a bit clinical, because you hear so much detail. (For human's it doesn't feel that enjoyable to listen to, but for mixing and monitoring its a delight)

@@HermanWillems "Yes the HS8 sounds a bit clinical, because you hear so much detail." Two sides of the coin :) When recording a song on HD650 + dac matrix headphones the smallest details can be heard. Then I turn on the song on speakers or headphones for games and half of the sounds are missing, you need to mix again. These tannoy characteristics sound similar to old, good Goodmans loudspeakers from the Axiom 300 series :)

I am not a big fan of the MUFFLED and NARROW sound of the Tannoy's here... I watched other comparison videos from the channel, and the other speaker (Yamaha, Presonus, Focal, iLoud...) sounded always better to me. For example, the vocals just sound terrible on the Tannoy IMO... The real world sound can be different in person, but after so many comparisons I don't have much faith... I have a pair of Tannoys, they sound great but quality is garbage. Only monitors that would randomly disconnect and you'd have to fight to connect it again. Just overall a crap experience, shame since they're $400+ a pair. I should have stayed with JBL LSRs or Yamahas since I've had zero issue with those randomly taking a shit on me.
