The original Tannoys are timeless designs, they are one of the great British designs, along with Spendor and Harbeth. Tannoys are very special with the dual concentric drivers. I developed and friendship with a hifi dealer in the UK back in the 90’s and he had just about every hi end speaker in his home you could name, including Revel, Thiel, Martin Logan and numerous other all hooked up to Martin Levinson huge monoblocks and front end, when he retired I visited him and his final speaker was a Tannoy from the 1970’s, he said there’s just nothing like them in the modern era. Sadly he passed away a few years ago but that always stuck with me.

I had the Prima Luna gear before upgrading to VAC. I absolutely loved Prima Luna but their soundstage was really small. If anyone wants Prima Luna Kevin at Upscale Audio had a tube rolling pack that made a massive difference when I bought it. I had some vintage stock tubes I put in from the 1960's in the prima luna and incredible difference. For the money their gear is top notch in that price range. They do not have the soundstage of more elite gear but of course much higher level pricing.
@AT-wl9yq
@AT-wl9yq Жыл бұрын
That doesn't always have to do with the brand, but the design choices they made. I have a VAC amp as well, but the design is completely different, and uses 300B tubes. I know Prima Luna uses EL34's, KT88's, 6550's, etc... Those type of amps just sound different. The VAC will definitely have a bigger, more open sound, but the PL should have more power and better overall control over the speaker.

@@AT-wl9yq - Which would you say is more musical?
@AT-wl9yq
@AT-wl9yq Жыл бұрын
@@Xx-xd3zo I have no problem using subjective terms, but I have no idea how to answer that one. Everyone is going to define musical differently. For example, the VAC isn't my main amp. I have it in a 2nd system. In my main system, I have 2 Ayre V-5's. If you ask me which is more musical, I would say Ayre is more musical in some ways, the VAC in others. And that's going by my personal definition of what musical means to me.
@Xx-xd3zo
@Xx-xd3zo Жыл бұрын
@@AT-wl9yq - Actually, most don't define musical differently. There's a sort of common, agreed upon concept of what musical is. Hence, the term gets used and semi-frequently. In what ways is the VAC more musical?

Glad to see PL gear auditioned . I feel it is a brand that is too easily dismissed since its products are not stratospheric. Sure, being that they are budget conscience items, they cannot do the exact same things that a cost no object component can. However, I find they do have the parts and engineering where it counts. No Ghost Meters, fancy case work, here. Regardless I always found PL gear to be very musical and just plain fun to listen to.

@@David-ns1re Sadly, nope. So far, I have used the KT-88, KT-120, KT-150, and the stock EL-34. For what it's worth, if you go with KT-88s they will take on the character of the McIntosh 275 (Depending on the make of tube.) In the 30 years I've been in audio I personally come to the conclusion that 5 to $10,000 All In gets a very nice sounding resolving system. At some point it becomes a little bit different flavors of sound. Not that it necessarily sounds better. So much of the sound quality is in the recording itself. JBL had a set up there where the tower speakers we're 1700. They sounded great. More proof.
