Here we have a foreigner who understands the miracle voice of Lata ji, while many Indians have already started forgetting her and now KZbinrs are busy posting neo singers who get nowhere even close to Lataji and openly commenting that they are far better than her. It’s a shame how Indians don’t have respect for our own icons. To say one, people even mentioned that Runa Laila and Nazia Hassan were far better than the mangeshkar sisters. The whole mangeshkar family has this unique god given gift of music and lataji is like goddess saraswati herself in person. My lifelong respect to this humble and divine soul.

I have the original LP record autographed by Lata didi and her brother Pt. Hridayanath Mangeshkar. It is a family heirloom and my earliest memories of my life since 1972 are listening to this when my late parents played and hummed to it. All of these masters who created this absolute masterpiece. The depth of this devotional bhajan is, of course, the lyrical composition itself by the 16th century Bhakti Saint Meera Bai, an ardent, surrendered devotee of our Lord Krishna. Born and married into a powerful royal family, she gave up all worldly matters to His devotion and ultimately became one with The Divine. She sings in the local Rajasthani dialect Marwari. Every bhajan from this album is a masterpiece in itself and I truly believe that Saint Meera bai’s soul entered Lataji when she sang these. My absolute admiration for you of your immaculate understanding of this entire composition and Indian Classical Music. Much respect and warmest greetings from India. 🇮🇳🙏🙏💐💐☺️☺️

It fascinates me how you appreciate literally the same things that a seasoned listener to Indian classical music would. I have seen many uninitiated western people who listen to Indian music appreciate it for the sake of its novelty. They are more in awe of how different this is, rather than what it is actually saying. I think you're one of the very few western people who really understand the essence of it. I loved watching your genuine reaction to this one.

Tanya studied Hindustani music from some great teachers. She knows many Indian languages. I read that as a child she went to school in Dharamshala. The depth of her knowledge of Indian music is amazing. I loved the way she analyzed key points in this song. Not all westerners have this kind of background. They are amazed by what the singer (Lata) can do with her voice but they dont have the knowledge to analyze the music. I am happy that they can still enjoy it.

Hi, Tanya. I am another "Westerner" (in New York City) who completely fell for old Indian film music and classical music quite a few years ago. I have also been listening to your songs for a while, and I think that this reaction video to Lata is great! It would be really nice if you did a video on something from Lata's old friend, Noor Jehan - especially during the period from the 1940s to the '70s. (I love her '40s pre-partition Indian film songs, her romantic '50s Pakistani film songs, and her '60s-'70s Sufi/dhamal songs, also from Pakistan.) Anyway, definitely looking forward to seeing more of these videos from you.

Wow good reaction ! This is why she is treated as goddes of singing in India , she could use small spaces between the beats efficiently , play with rhythmical time , while keeping the notes as sharp as a knife and most important ..outstanding control on breathing . You should listen to her Marathi songs just to experience her excellence in singing complex melodies. I can suggest an Album - Abhang Tukayache composed by the great Shrinivas Khale and any of her brothers compositions .

I went to St. Mira’s school and these bhajans were played in our assembly every single school day. What a blessing. When the rest of the schools were learning nursery rhymes, we learned the complex and highly spiritual compositions of Mirabai. We hated it then as kids but somewhere somehow it all trickled down into our hearts. Now all I want to do is keep listening to these amazing bhajans which sound like they came straight out of Mira-Hari’s souls. I totally believe Lata had Mira’s soul.

One of the biggest subcontinent singers of yesteryears, Bade Ghulam Ali Saab, had once lauding her voice said in Urdu " Kambakht kabhi besoori nahi hoti"... translates in English " Her voice bloody never ever goes off tune". Proud to be one of her biggest fans!! Lata Didi rest in peace!!

As a side note, she herself has professed that only her brother knew her range, and he would always challenge her to take it to the next level, which of course, she gladly accepted!! This song is one point in case!!

Dear Tanya, At the first place, I 'm stunned the way you speak about the immortal Lata ji. Any Indian would agree that her songs directly touch the soul . And if you ask them why that is so , majority of them won't be able to answer . But your video gave answer to that question. I'm grateful to you. YOU TAUGHT ME HOW TO LISTEN LATA DIDI. PROFOUND REGARDS. MOTE.R.N.

Lataji is beyond words. She is God's special, unique, one & only creation... You have understood and interpreted the composition beautifully. These are very complex and impeccably executed creations. People have aspired to be as her, inspired endlessly by her, but nobody can reach the pinnacle that she has achieved

Lots of love tanya. I am so glad this song found you and vice versa. There is a marathi bhajan album of lataji 'amrutacha ghanu'. Based on verses by sant dnyaneshwar (1275-1296). He wrote them at age 16. He took 'samadhi' at age 22. To unravel the supremely profound meaning of these verses is another life's must do.

There are so many wonderful singers from around the world who deserve to be heard. But a very small number of them have to be experienced. Lata Mangeshkar is one of those. But it takes a certain level of appreciation for the music to experience her. You my dear Tanya, have that X factor. You have the ability to sing this song, follow its subtle tonal modulations, and you are able to lock into the devotional dimension to it. It is so obvious from your face and your own voice. It is a pleasure to hear your commentary. Thank you for sharing your thoughts, and best wishes.
