Most of it was destroyed by one of the most terrible earthquakes (anywhere in the world!), of the twentieth century on 28 December 1908 when about 80,000 people lost their lives; the earthquake then triggered a 12 metre tsunami on top of that. What was left was wrecked during WW2. There are better tourist and food destinations all over Italy.
