Sicily is a unique and wonderful region, just like all the others, but despite everything, all of them are Italy. Even if each region has its own characteristics and traditions, there is a very strong base and cultural/identity bond common to all of Italy that holds the regions all together. Hello, I'm from Sicily (north part of Catania). I just wanted to thank you for such a professional video. You people wanna know what it's like living in Sicily? I've always had the impression that I could tour around my island for a lifetime and still I'd never be able to grasp everything. This is also because it still takes a lot of time to travel around it. Ever since we became a part of Italy our development has been heavily let down, and in this lack of economical and social progression you already know that the mob has found fertile soil, with a lot of indifference and often times participation from our governments (hence the resentment of Sicilians towards being called Italians, I guess some of us feel a lot more like a destabilized colony). People from the south were and still are called "Terrone", which means dirty. It's like the N word but for southerners. What I'm trying to say is: you pay the price for being so different and Sicily has a lot of work to do to make that magnificent and ancient history shine bright once again and to develop a stable economy. As of now, we have 10.000 problems to fix matured over the history of Italy. Almost every young person who thrives for a future has to leave, like in my case. I've always hated how people that leave that tiny beautiful world sometimes are so heartbroken that they forget the context and just start hating on their motherland, as a copying mechanism to adapt with other italians. But it's with the precious help of content like this (I've discovered this channel today) that we can remember who we are, how many things there are to explore and study, and we can show the world that our culture, even though being so contaminated with everything else, is also unique and we must be proud of it. We have been an important settlement for a lot of populations, and some have earned the right to join our mix of cultures. Sicily IS in Italy.....for now.

The mob hasn't only killed a monumental number of people in Sicily with inhumane methods, but it has ruined and keeps ruining everybody else's honest work. The damage to society and economy was incalculable. Besides, one of the most important consequences is environmental damage as well. Italy has taken a very long time to acknowledge those who denounced the mob rather than resisting to them. Peppino Impastato was a journalist killed by the mafia but newspapers initially tried to discredit him by describing him as a terrorist. It was his mother who fought all her life to make the truth show up, risking being killed herself. When important legal figures such as Falcone and Borsellino, two judges and heroes of Sicilian people, were torn apart by plastic explosives along with their family and guards, sometimes the investigations were sabotaged. The most important case of this regards the "agenda rossa di Paolo Borsellino", I encourage you to Google about it. Recently in South Italy, mayors who are associated with some politicians from the north, known for singing about us being "burned alive by the volcano" during their meetings, are still being framed for collaborating with mafia, which is very much alive in all of Italy. In fact, it's very well known that elections themselves are dirty in the first place. Our modern history is a history of abuse and betrayal. This explains why a growing number of people is below economical and educational standards. But we will unite someday against all of this. If you want to read something about this, I think a perfect first reading would be "Cose di Cosa Nostra". It countains interviews with Giovanni Falcone where he talks about the way he saw the mob working as a judge. It has a lot of interesting shades. And if you are reading this from the other part of the world right now, don't blindly believe to the people who describe us as literal demons, and know that you may encounter uneducated or rude italians from every region as for every country in the world. This doesn't mean you have to give in to the stereotypes and discrimination, because sadly there's still tons of it around. Thanks for reading!

Horse meat is fabulous, very tasty and lean, has tons of iron and that's why it's very red when raw in respect of beef of veal. Here in Italy all supermarkets have a horse meat section in the meats department, also because it's very indicated for kids because of the leanness and the high iron and vitamins content.

@@LUIS-ox1bvnot « only Americans » are squeamish. Horse meat is available in France but many many French people won’t eat it and feel about it as disgusted as eating dog meat. I firmly believe that I’m Sicilian, not Italian. We have a different culture and blood, as showed in the video, on top of that we struggle with racism from Italian people, especially in the northern part. We have our own language and history and we’re the reason Italy flourished, we were robbed of our independence and resources and we’re still left behind to this day. Italian politicians blatantly hate us and they’re the reason we face so many issues. Italy is just another country that colonized us and we should treat it as such, not as if it’s part of our identity. Anyway, I really enjoyed the video! You did a great job 👍🤟

Sicilian Baroque is the distinctive form of Baroque architecture which evolved on the island of Sicily, off the southern coast of Italy, in the 17th and 18th centuries, when it was part of the Spanish Empire
@LUIS-ox1bv Жыл бұрын
Yes. Many forget, that Sicily was under Spanish control for quite a while. It was the Spaniards who brought tomatoes from Mexico to Europe. Sicily was also under the control of the Normans and Arabs, and a major Greek colony in ancient times.They have all left their stamp on the island's distinctive flavor.

@@LUIS-ox1bv sicily since the fall of the roman empire never had the opportunity to become an independent kingdom caused by the various foreign powers fighting each other for the control over the island which is in a strategic position at the center of the mediterean sea.
@aofg Жыл бұрын
@@LUIS-ox1bv Most important mark on the island was left by the Romans. Sicilians speak a romance language, their religion/culture is Roman. That dude grossly exaggerated the Arab basically invisible influence. Eastern part of Sicily was in the hands of the Carthage, a Canaanite people, so they were Semitic and closely related to the Arabs. I suspect that in Eastern Sicily might still be some faint Carthaginian traces that they confuse with the Arab ones. As for the market, he should travel more, all markets are like that everywhere traditional markets still exist.
