TAP Air Portugal Operates Epic 10 Hour Long Airbus A321LR Flight

The A321LR is an incredibly capable aircraft, and on March 29th, one airline demonstrated just how versatile it can be. While most A321LR operators stick to short and medium-haul routes with the aircraft, Tap Portugal took it on an impressive 10 hour trip across Africa and beyond.

Not very good to hear. The Airlines once see the feasibility of such long haul flights in narrow bodies, they'll start filling up these narrow claustrophobic machines like sardine cans. Imagine being stuck like that for 8-10 hours. And this is not even the XLR we're talking about.

@@adnanalikhan6890 i've flown longhaul on 757s many many times, flights of 7,x to up to 9 hours and its no big deal at all. Those 757s are not configured with 235 seats, they have around 170 seats in two classes. The A321 seats around 160 in a similar configuration, which is less cramped than many widebodies.

You don’t. This plane can’t do a 7 hour flight with passengers and cargo. This was just a ferry flight.

@@TysonIke Yes, at 4,700 mile maximum range, it’ll be about a 10 hour maximum, but most carriers aren’t going to include extra crews or crew rest positions, so you’ll likely see them on 7-8 hour legs. That’s the XLR though. This is not.

My longest flights on a narrow body aircraft were United flights between Hamburg and Newark on their 757 (should be just around 8 hours). I really enjoyed them and I really don’t see why people in the comments are complaining about flying a narrow body on long haul routes. Seats, service and much more remain the same as on widebodies, so the downsides I see are maybe for claustrophobic people and storage room for meals as well as crew rest (blocked seats should do the trick). But after all, it’s not the first time a narrow body is used on long flights!

The Azores Airlines bought 3 brand-new A321s LR and they travel from Lisbon/Azores to the USA's East Coast and Canada. What an amazing aircraft and one of the best investments of the airline due to its fuel-effeciency and range since they replaced 10-year old A330-200 and two very old A310-300 workhorses.

My longest narrow-body flight was on British Airways from London City (LCY) to New York (JFK) via Shannon (SNN) on an Airbus A318 in 2018. If I remember correctly the flight from LCY to SNN was under an hour and the flight from SNN to JFK was about 7 hours. Very pleasant and memorable flight. I also took trans-cons in the US in narrow-bodies, such as JFK-LAX on AA and Virgin America (A321 and A320, respectively), LAX to EWR on UA (B739), Burbank to JFK on JetBlue (A320) and Virgin America from LAX to EWR (A320). I also flew Icelandair from JFK to KEF and back, on board B753 and B752, if that counts. I also took a BA flight from Manchester (MAN) to Warsaw (WAW) on an ERJ-145 back in 1999, flight time of about 3 hours.

This flight perfectly encapsulates Airbuses vision, a rather low density flight but still able to go point to point. It does raise questions about how to make it as comfortable as wide bodies though

I don’t really think the comfort really differs from widebodies! Of course when looking down the fuselage you may feel constricted by the narrow fuselage but other than that the comfort (seats, service, ...) really is the same. Or what’s missing?

@@spongebubatz You're correct. It's psychologically uncomfortable (for me anyway) to be sitting in a narrow space for more than (say) 5 hours--unless you bump me up to first/business class. I haven't flown in a transatlantic narrow-body aircraft since 747s and other wide bodies were introduced and I don't intent on returning to narrow-bodies for long-distance flights anytime soon. Basically...to each his own.

​@@spongebubatz cabin pressure, more toilets if one is out of use, more than 1 aisle to go down if you need to stretch legs and not get in the way, and that feeling of spaciousness. I imagine the seat sizes will be very similar, so if you are like my wife and demand a window seat and spend the majority of the flight asleep with head against the window then not much will change. If you are like me and far too large for a standard plane seat, have restless legs, like to stand up for 1-3 hours on any long haul flight and have only ever slept on a plane when Ive had a lie flat seat, (even though I have done many UK-OZ flights without stop overs)... then you are going to hate long distance on a narrow body.

My two longest narrow body flights were aboard a Boeing 737 and a 737MAX. Ouagadougou to Addis Ababa with Ethiopian at roughly 6 hours, and Belfast to New York with Norwegian at roughly 6.30hours. Long haul in a narrow body is such a novelty. Can’t wait to fly TAP some day!

DVT doesn’t care if it’s single aisle or twin and lavatories are divided by the passenger count. With only 160 passengers, this A321 has 3 lavatories, which is better than most 777s.

The longest flight I’ve taken in a narrow body was from Paris CDG to Pointe Noire PNR in a A319LR operated by Air France back in 2007. I’ve taken it a few times when I lived in Congo. It’s was when AF flew the A319 “Dedicate” to Oil production destinations. The trip took around 8hrs.

Just what I was thinking. Sure it might be slightly more profitable and need less passengers to break even... but I would chose the extra space of a wide body aircraft over this any day... Not to mention the newer widebodies such as the A350 and B787 have much lower altitude of cabin pressure which does slightly reduce fatigue & Jet lag.

Back in 2018, Philippine Airlines (PAL) started flying their new A321neo on the MNL-SYD-MNL route. I flew on both the SYD-MNL (PR214) and MNL-SYD (PR213) flights. Both flights were around 8hrs in duration. It was a strange feeling since I've only ever flown on widebody aircraft on this route, and here I was flying on a narrowbody - made it feel like it was a domestic flight. But despite that, it was actually a nice flight. Departed Sydney early morning, arrived in Manila just in time for lunch.

What's ironic is that planes like the Douglas DC-8, Vickers VC10 and the Boeing 707 were flying routes of this length all the time in the 1950s and 1960s. With the A321XLR we're going back to the early days of jet engined planes, just minus two engines.

Not the longest flight by schedule from BHX to EWR on a Continental 757-200 but when we got near EWR it was shut down due to weather, we held for over two hours before diverting to alternative airports but could find nothing open so had to fly down to Dulles at around 10000 feet at a fairly slow speed. Pilot was constantly updating us on having enough fuel but had to conserve as much as possible so not able to climb to normal altitudes. In the end the overall flight was just under 11 hours, assume we did not fly that far but for a very long time in this aircraft.

A321neo La Compagnie Paris Orly to Newark (just under 9 hours that day), only seconded by the outgoing flight Newark to Paris (7 hours) Second longest non-stop narrowbody route would have been New York JFK-San Francisco aboard JetBlue's A320 (on tail 503 - sometimes referred to by their FAs as "Christine") and vice-versa on another JetBlue A320. Third longest would be Air Canada A320 from Toronto to San Francisco and vice-versa on a United A319. Also an honourable mention for the direct (but not non-stop) flight I had on a 737-700 from San Francisco to Buffalo on Southwest.

Ponta Delgada to Boston on Azores Air, A321neo: Officially, it is a 5 hours 50 minutes flight; however, due to a storm in the North Atlantic and a strong jet stream (in February), the flight took a more northerly route and lasted more than 6 hours. A great flight, nonetheless!

I flew from Hawaii to Texas and Texas to Hawaii when I was in the Army in the '90's. One way was 8 hours, the other 9 hours; I believe it was American Airlines (never had comfortable landings with Delta). I have no idea what type of plane it was back then, though.

My longest narrowbody flight is probably Cape Town to Nairobi in an E190, it's about 6 hours with a fuel stop in Victoria Falls. Kenyan Airways clearly uses the E190 instead of a 737 as they don't have enough of 737s.

I think Vancouver-Montreal/Toronto have been my longest narrowbody flights. Edinburgh to Istanbul is 3rd longest.
