I remember beating the game and the wonder on discovering little secrets by stacking bombs and bounce on them to reach new areas / platforms. I definitely didn't remember the frame drops being so massive back in the day LOL. This vid brings back so many memories, multiplayer fun included, thanks a lot for posting

Fun fact if you go back to green 2 friend or foe after collecting the 100 gold cards.. he will greet you like an enemy
@MarioMastar4 ай бұрын
Yeah, in all areas you talk to him, he will mention how much charge he has left before he attacks Planet Bomber. He also will no longer save you in The Cold Killer boss fight if you fall off the snowflake, and all the Remote Bombs for bosses will be in a pyramid capsule instead of him dropping it on you, so you have to blow it up (though by then you already got all the Boss gold cards). He still kills the enemy in Green Garden 3 that steals your exit though. Great continuity nod. Really wish more games did that. those little bits really show attention to detail.

Let alone 100%ing it in 3 hours to get the Gold custom suit... on Hard mode. Though mostly cause Rainbow Palace REALLY jacks up the difficulty. and the Cherry bomb settings hurt more than help with most bosses (you'll kill the dragon before you can burn all his body parts). Gosh but this game rewarded creativity like no other game, I miss it SO much...such a shame Generations didn't really hold up (namely the music being infinitely worse)

I remember I bought this game used and played it on my brother’s N64. Not having the manual, I was probably a little lost in terms of the gold cards. I got the concept of finding them throughout the open levels, but I didn’t see that they are also awarded for time completion as well as certain achievements in the boss fights. I never understood why they couldn’t just have a regular clock instead of one that counts in singular, fast-paced units. Mario 64 by comparison made objectives a little more clear going by the names of the missions. Overall though, I still have fun memories with this game. It really provided a sense of adventure and inspired creativity. I would like to replay it one day to obtain all the gold cards.

Yeah, also the game rewarding you wtih bonus worlds after you 100% and the custom pieces too really gave you a reason to explore more. Plus I love how world 1 is meant to be a "Tutorial" but has some of the most diabolical secrets with that tall structure that warps you to the secret room and knowing how to make bomb bridges to get the cherry bomb so you can even destroy those blue pillars. It really rewards multiple playthroughs since they show you how to do this stuff in the credits. GOSH they do NOT make games like they used to! What an ERA!

@MarioMastar4 ай бұрын
Whew... the last zone makes getting the other 100 cards look like a joke. Clever how if you beat Altair without getting all the gold cards, the game will show you how to do bomb bridges and ladders to reach higher areas, a required skill for even beating Rainbow Palace, let alone getting the gold cards (and most of the customs in the game). and if you want to truly 100% it, you have to do it all in 3 hours. XD

Is this on an emulator? What sort of controller are you using, and do you have fast finger(s) or are you using turbo to pump the bombs so consistently fast? I played on the actual Nintendo 64. Darn, I could almost never get all the bosses gold cards, even after I knew where to hit, and I did not have turbo, only tired fingers. Anyhow, nice memory skills, and bomb placement.

a xbox controller is highly recommended, but a cheap xbox mock off for pc is enough. ps4 controllers are also ok
@MarioMastar4 ай бұрын
Learning to rapid mash is useful. I can kind of pump them about that fast. You can try techniques like the vibrating thumb (hold your thumb over the button, tense up your arm and let your thumb vibrate), or rapidly pressing wtih the middle and index figure. What's way harder for a human is getting out of dizzy state quickly without moving, cause you have to rotate the control stick. If you're in a tight spot you could accidently walk off the stage, but if you rotate too slow, you won't get undizzy fast enough to avoid getting blown up with these non remote bomb bridges/ladders.

Wait is the very last zone technically an extra level or something? Watched a speed run on this just before and they didn't include it, was never able to finish that last level!
@frankystrings2 жыл бұрын
Yes because it required a specific requirement to unlock it (beat level 5 boss with 100 gold cards)
@MarioMastar4 ай бұрын
Any% runs will just beat Altair as quickly as possible. As the game requires you to 100% to get to Rainbow Palace, there's no real point in just doing Rainbow Palace as quickly as possible without the gold cards for a speed run (as you can just do ILs really at that point, since level order DOES kind of matter for optimal routing as you can choose any of the 4 worlds to do in any order). These TAPs kind of simulate a casual player 100%ing the game with TAS precision, not aiming for speed as much as being a long play that's played optimally.

Why is everything faster? Has this to do with PAL version stuff?
@MarioMastar4 ай бұрын
Likely, PAL versions are run at 50hrz due to thier tv refresh rates, so to simulate North American and Japanese speeds, they speed up the game by about 20%. but when played back in modern machines via emulation, the game can be faster. However, this is about as fast as the version I played, just with less lag generally, so it may be lag.

I liked this game but I don't think Bomberman 64 could ever have been made by an American company. The bouncing bomb physics required to get 100% on levels are so flakey and difficult that they would have failed playtesting long before the game shipped. I don't think it was a great choice the game developers made exploiting a buggy hack a first class game mechanic.
@millerwrightt4 жыл бұрын
After you arguing here that americans games are less buggy?
@SycophanticLeech3 жыл бұрын
when bomberman was made for america it turned into bomberman: act zero. Also, I have no idea what you're talking about but it sounds like a skill issue. Specifically one on your end. Maybe you're just not meant to get 100%.
@hfcriske Жыл бұрын
@@SycophanticLeech 100% agree :)
@MarioMastar4 ай бұрын
Bomb bouncing was clearly an intended mechanic. they literally show you how to do it in the credits to teach you how to get the secrets to 100% the game and see the true ending. If anything this game showed MORE respect for Americans by not holding our hands and letting us employ problem solving techniques. But it was cleaned up in later games like Generations. Plus you wanna talk about the US versions being "easier", Bomberman Hero, the score requirements for 5 points is literally the max possible points in every stage that doesn't have self destructing enemies. the Japanese version doesn't require you to get everything, having a bit of leeway. Making the US version a lot more challenging. The only reason people think the US versions of games are "Easy mode" is because of sh8tty NES games that were fixed to NOT be so buggy before being released in the US, not because JP players were expected to have more skill. It was the other way around in many cases. They were the guinea pigs.

I saw this game being rated one of the worst games ever and boy do they take me back to the horrible gameplay as a child. i finished the game but never 100% so i take my hat off
@MarioMastar4 ай бұрын
Cause the game doesn't hold your hand, but it's also not unfair about it. XD It literally teaches you how to make bomb bridges and bomb ladders during the credits to reach the secrets and it's up to you to figure out how to use them in the stages. The game does everything right to be easy for the beginner (playing casually) but difficult for the expert (trying to 100%). There definitely are some areas that are kind of BS (Spell master....) but once you figure out the way to play, the game opens up tremendously. Sadly modern games are spoiled before they even come out. There's no "here's a tool, figure out how to use it to solve these puzzles" it's either literally "put square box in square hole, but requiring a metronome and a math degree to be that precise." or "Here's a long combination of inputs that will skip everything and still give you the 100% ending.... in a game made in 2024....".
