The trains must be working in order to use the new system. They out on a track and signal repair excuses every other week. At the same time the new signal and tracks also infected with outages. Since 2020 the amount of money the MBTA spent on the entire green line in the name of repair would have covered for a new transit system for the entire NE. Give these tap systems couple of months they will certainly be for decorative purposes only.

And why not show how to pay with a mobile phone, which I expect most users will be doing anyway?

You literally just place your phone against it and pay like any other tap-to-pay system at any cash register

Standing too close to a reader could result in accidental charges? That sounds like a bad design especially when a train or bus is crowded when people are forced to stand near them. There should be a confirmation button on the reader to require user interaction before riders' cards/phones are charged. Going to have to remember to turn off NFC to prevent accidental charges now.

This is how it is on busses and trams around the world. These readers aren’t at waist height. If the video didn’t say anything you wouldn’t even be complaining. Why not just be happy that the T got some new infrastructure

@yaush_ I'm not against new infrastructure nor new ways of paying for convenience. I just don't want to be charged for inadvertently waving my phone near the new readers. It would be annoying to repeatedly dispute these errant charges. This will probably be an issue mainly on the Green line as there will be readers at the multiple exits where people tend to stand. Also, it would be ideal to add CharlieCard support for users who prefer that method and speed up boarding for Green line customers. Lastly, I knew about the potential issue months ago when my phone registered multiple transactions while I was standing near these new readers. Luckily, the readers were not officially rolled out so the charges didn't go through. I now turn off my phone's nfc as a result to avoid the accidental charges.

The whole point of contactless payment is that you can just tap and go without having to think or press anything. Requiring users to interact with the reader basically nullifies the whole point of having this system in the first place. A better solution is to make it so that the system doesn't charge the same card multiple times in the same vehicle. That way, any additional erroneous taps are harmless and don't result in additional charges.
