There's a joke in my family that my uncle is a spy, he has lived all over the world, speaks a dozen languages, insanely smart, very quiet and can blend into the background (basically the only time I ever get to talk to him is about maths), the job he stated doesn't seem probable, nobody knows exactly what he does, he always has a big office in his house which is always locked, and has a permanent residence in Austria, however he is wealthy which is the only thing which would discout him as a spy; he has never confirmed nor denied being a spy and just politely smiles when someone brings it up (he has never joked about anything - this could be his 1 joke in his whole life)

@@therealdave06 it's a German saying. "Pi mal Daumen" or "Pi times thumb" just refers to any approximation. So "Es gibt 8000 Spione in Wien, so Pi Mal Daumen" would mean "there are approximately 8000 spies in Vienna", but keep in mind it's an informal saying.

Good question. The short answer was, because of differences ;) Soviet occupied Austria was much smaller than East Germany and therefore would have been much less viable as a separate state than East Germany. Also, the Soviets controlled only a few districts of Vienna and almost all central districts were controlled by Western occupation powers with the 1st district being actually shared among all. It would have been short of impossible to put up a wall in Vienna and even if they had done it, they would would have ended up with a pretty bad deal. The most important reason however is that a neutral Austria was a much better deal for the Soviets than a divided Austria with an East Austrian puppet regime. The Soviet east was flat and easy to conquer and hard to defend. Most of the rest of Austria is hilly to alpine, hard or extremely hard to conquer and easy to defend. By choosing a neutral Austria, the Soviets gave up a useless puppet state but made sure the West could not fortify the west of Austria as part of NATO.

Rather, it refers to the debate on unifying Germany leading up to 1871 specifically without Austria (as opposed to 'Großdeutschland', which would have seen Austria being incorporated in the new German state - which in the end neither Austria nor Prussia wanted).
