I still have a mask that I made in high school that was made out of the tape they use in hospitals for making a cast. Trying to look it up it I think it is called casting or cast tape. It can be smoothed over while it is wet, can stretch to fit weird shapes, and if I remember right it can be sanded once dry. Though you may want to put a few layers on if you are sanding. You probably already tried it, but I thought to mention it just in case.

I have tried it - we can find it as plaster cloth or plaster bandages. I really like using it over a clay model, and then add details with paper mache or paper mache clay. It's really strong, and lasts a long time. Now that you've reminded me, I think I should do another project with it. 😊

How clever to use paper medical tape as a fast mess free mache option. I’m excited to see the bird masks decorated! Great colors in the inspiration photos. One idea I had while watching was I wonder how strips wallpaper would work as mache? It has a wet activated glue on the back. I’m going yo experiment with an old roll I have around and see how it behaves in strips!! Thank you Joni!! 🎉

Wallpaper - that never occurred to me! We did find the tape, and it's really expensive - over $70 - so I can't wait to see how your experiments turn out!

I wish I had known about tape mache when my boys were young. I think it would be comfortable for them and last as long as their interest in the character lasted. I now have great great grandsons to think about and you have just helped me a lot.

Hi! Greetings from Chile! Ive used this technique in the past and its lovely! I dont know the actual name of the tape, but you can get it from carboard box suppliers or art stores, I havent seen them in Colors, It is usually brown, broad, and really big, so you can tear it up with your fingers and use it just like paper Maché and get a "smother" finish with the torn edges. Just dip the piece in water, drop the excess, and voilá! You can use it for a quick first layer and finnish it off with the traditional paste and toilet paper for a "best of both worlds" result. It is used to seal photo frames and cardboard boxes, opaque exterior and shiny interior (water activated glue), best of luck!

Thank you! We found some that I could order, and I should be able to start playing with it next week. I'll try your techniques when it arrives. The tape I ordered is here: amzn.to/3wDUARa - does that look like the type you mentioned? It says it's stretchy, and I really like that idea. 😊

@@UltimatePaperMache As I'm sure you've found out by now, when the product description mentioned stretching, what they meant was it was used for stretching watercolor paper - to prevent buckling when wet paint applied. I'm pretty sure you already had that in your hand at the 2:00 mark in video.

Sure - why not! It might not last forever, but it could be fun. 😊 And, by the way - you can always use recycled paper in paper mache clay - it just takes longer to soak to break down the fibers. Using hot water helps.

Hi Jonni, The Pacon site lists resale sources for the tape. You have to dig for it. You'll find it in the "tapes" section and the links are a few clicks in. Blick is one that lists the tape on their site. I would put links here in the comments but they don't seem to work.

I asked on Amazon how sticky is the "Pacon Wet n Stick tape" from the original video (the brand and type is shown at the beginning of the video). Here is the response I got..."The tape sticks as well as glue stick, but not as well as white glue. Easy for children to use if they don't mind licking it. I always have a damp sponge available for those not comfortable licking the tape."

Your video mentions the wrong brand and name for the wet and stick tape. Creativity Street brand is the masking tape, not the wet and stick tape.

Thanks for researching this for us. I'm pretty sure I'm not going to lick any tape. I did order some wet and stick packing tape but I've only played around for a few minutes. I'm not very excited about it yet, but maybe when I have more time I'll like it better. The kind the lady was using in the video is way too expensive for most of us.

I wonder if you cut the water activated shippubg paper tape into strips, maybe avoiding the reinforcement strings somewhat, if it would work. But yes the medical paper tape is great and you can purchase non-3m brands thar would be much cheaper.

Be careful of what tape you use as often the adhesive is toxic and should not be used near a person’s face. I found this out because a while back I looked up those stickers grocery stores put on produce. I was wondering about the ink. I found out that the paper is harmless, but the adhesive is toxic. Shocking, but true.
@UltimatePaperMache
@UltimatePaperMache Жыл бұрын
Wow - that is not good. Do you mean the adhesive that's stuck right on the apples is toxic? The tape I used for this experiment was made for skin, so it should be Ok. But I've just ordered some brown paper tape to play with. How would we research to find out if it's save to use for masks?
