One of my favorite scenes in the whole anime. Grimmer listening to the tape and suddenly realizing he is ALSO that boy. His biggest fear is that his "self" is not him, its what someone MADE him to be.

Nobody made Johan that way. I mean he has been subjected to experiments in Kinderheim, but prior to that, he's made all of his choices. His distrust of his mother, his choice to be Anna's memory/trauma sponge, his multiple killings prior to crossing the border. The main theme of the show is this question: "Are monsters created or born?" That's the point of having a variety of monsters in the show-monsters that were created, humans who did monstrous acts, and even monsters that reverted back to being humans-to set Johan apart. Johan was not created a monster. He was born that way. edit: I might be getting ahead of myself if you were talking about Grimmer. But evidently, Johan and Grimmer are different kinds of monsters. It's an invalid comparison.

A child who was never named (Franz Bonaparta didn't let his mother name him)? The same child that saw his mother unable to differentiate her own children, but still chose to sacrifice one of them? The child who was left alone at the three frogs, forced to run away alone with his sister after hearing all the horrible things she went through? He was made a monster, that's the whole point of it. Since he was young, his sense of identity was shattered. He didn't chose to be Anna's emotional sponge, he, since very young, grew in a ambient where his mother made him and his sister essentially the same. Are you really going to blame the victim here? He was a child who went through a LOT, what did you expect him to do, being all alone trying to protect his sibling? Yes, as an adult, he became a horrible person, and as you said, there are those topics. But realizing Johan was a victim is the whole point of Anna's investigation and insistence on trying to save her brother at the end. Johan was made what he is, not born. Not even Roberto was born evil. That psychopath with glasses? Yeah, he was. But Kinderhein victims are VICTIMS.

Johan wasn’t a psychopath! It’s might be hard to believe but psychopaths are born and they can’t feel emotions and in this scene he clearly cares about Anna. Johan is just a child who is traumatized to the point where he mixed his reality with the reality of that picture book. In this whole interview he only says quotes from the book. Johan’s story is really sad if you think about it.

Karey Carty oh god... Please do your research before you answear next time. The so called “psychopaths” has an antisocial dissorder, this dissorder is something that they born with. To be more precise, the part of the brain which is responsable for human emotions are not developed. Which means they can’t FEEL human emotions HOWEVER they can fake it really well as most of the psychopaths are a master of manipulation. In my explanation I said human emotions, which means they can feel pain, anger etc. (These are emotions that can be seen in the wildlife, as a crocodile can feel pain too) And they do understand emotions, that’s why they can fake it so accurately and use it as a tool to manipulate people. Antisocial disorders have many forms. One of them is psychopaths, but there are many others with different sympthoms. However psychopaths are the most dangerous as they usually belong to a community and from the outside it’s pretty hard to tell that they are different from an avarage human. On the other hand a sociopath is usually lonely, they tend to stand out from the crowd, they have a hard time controlling their anger and so on. ANTISOCIAL IS NOT EQUALS TO NONSOCIAL!

It was said that before the 511 incident, he was already a monster and it was he who had instigated the children and teachers to kill each other. It was his sister Anna who was subjected to red rose mansion cruelty which Johan confused with himself to be his memory. So that's y it was said that he was not made a monster but he was born a monster already.

No, those characters may seem the same on the outside, but are quite different. Lite is a sociopath, not a psychopath. Even before he gets the death note, he shows little care for those around him and even from the start, only wishes to save people because he wants to be the one to save them, not because he actually wishes them to be safe. He has a God complex. The only way he cares about anyone is for how useful they can be to him, even his own family. Johan has that same cunning and manipulation tactics, but he does care about people, but he just can’t show it because he simply does not know how. He cares about his sister, clearly, and of course, Dr. Tenma. He wants to teach both a lesson, to show the people he cares about that he is right and they are wrong. If he didn’t care about them, he would’ve simply killed both of them, which he had every chance to do. The biggest difference, however, is that Lite wants to be remembered as basically the second coming of Christ, even though he couldn’t be more opposite. Johan, on the other hand, wants to be forgotten completely, killing those that have so much as heard his name, and then wishing to die by the one man who saved him.

And he just got the same feeling from hearing the munching as all the words before were like anxieties building up scratching at his lungs and throat, doubts consuming his mind not even sure what he’s doubtful of, then hearing the crunch munch munch go crunch munch munch go it was like he could finally hear the monster after him feeling it in his throat, in his soul, and no longer feeling himself, then realizing, it’s because he IS the nameless monster. Sure you can go by the name grimmer if you want so could Johan, and you could go by the name johan if you want, I mean you’re both just boys filled with a monster gobbling you up, that’s all you are, a monster, just like Johan, just like the boy who ate the king, just like the monster without a name. Point is it isn’t you at all, and similar to how addiction supernaturally (not literally less we’re speaking scientific non supernatural possession ) possesss you johan or more aptly the nameless monster invades everything you are turning all your actions in to repeating survival patterns like the man too strong but not liked enough so he used his powers(both the monster and the axe man as they are the same entity just ones an idea seemingly alive and wanting like addiction) to try and impress the people which cost too much energy (depression) and he eats himself, posesess the kid and likes the name of KING OF DARKNESS nah I mean johan restoring a vital kid who was sick giving him the kids energy and kid ideology’s such as well wanting to stay a kid forever causing him to hold in his darkness I mean hunger till he couldn’t anymore and let it out. His empty darkness, all over his parents, and all over 511 kinderheim, ate the king and all his servants until he was all full, and all alone, and in time he would grow hungry again. As you feel your belly, oh, how big it’s grown. It feels like you’re going to explode, crunch, munch munch,go, explode, crunch, munch munch crunch, munch munch, crunch munch munch, crunch munch mum*throw up all over the fu*king table* like you got me fucked up I would be just as quick to throw up, he wants to murder the detective, himself, the monster, but at the same time that’s the monster speaking clawing his way out to devour all you are and all those around you if you’re not enough, and you, you ARE the monster. It’s tells everything and how the reaction grimmer take is realizing a scene like some kinda deja vu and Johan is just that one character in records who predicts the future without even knowing he did and what has happened. Weird ways if something simple in a record with the evidence of a specific person say words unimaginable with his mind twisted with reality and picture books, including someone he cares about very deeply. He wouldn’t really be a qychopath but I get the idea he killed people. Dexter Morgan for example claims he is qychopath but he is not really just like if I’m going to relate him to Johan they both are or were in a state a trauma and created from reality, to a imagination or their world they accept. Johan only did the bad things because he thinks everyone is better off dead and Dexter killed bad people to protect the good ones but he wasnt a good guy aswell. Johan tho did try to kill a kid but he only did that to threat to get himself killed again and instead he was brought back and that’s why he got back up from his sleep in the dream because it was his rage perhaps that he just wanted to die without killing himself. Very weird concept but makes sense of why he is doing all this is because he just wants to die and wants people to suffer the way he and his had suffered.

A misconception people have is Johan loved Anna? Well, that can't be more wrong tho. Johan considered Anna to be one half of the same monster he was. He was her and she was him. That girl dressing scene in their childhood explains it quite well. He didn't love anything. Johan was nihilistic. A good understanding of Johan's past will open your mind. Not everybody is able to identify character motivation.

i think that the boy without a name loved his sister dearly. so much in fact that he became the monster ‘Johan’ in an attempt to BECOME her trauma itself and have it destroyed. so maybe the character we witness throughout the series only saw Nina as his other half, but the only reason that’s the case is because it’s the choice he made long ago in an attempt to save her. and i like to think that person finally came back at the end of the series

Well about the story Johan was talking about it was a monster the monster ask the boy name and hes name is otto so the monster goes inside of otto body but the monster become more hungry and eat people and eat otto himself and the monster became monster again and he walk and saw another boy who names hans he said to him if he tell hes name he will become stronger so hans give his name and the monster go inside of hans body but he gotten hungry again he eat people and hans body and he becomes monster again and he walk walk until he saw another boy again names thomas the monster ask hes name and he gave it but the monster become hungry again eat people and eat thomas and become monster ones again and he saw a bright castle he wanted to go in and he go up in the prince room who has a disease and veey unhealthy and had a sick the monster said to him if he said hes name to the monster he will become stronger and the boy immediately said yes because he wanted to be healthy and the monster go inside of the prince body and the prince said everyone im okay i dont had a sick anymore he is very happy and also the king was very shocked and bit lil confused about it and the monster think about it not leaving this boy body because he said he kinda like it living in this castle and more food than he thought so one day he run and said look at me look at me! A psychopath doesn't feel emotions nor they can feel other's feelings But Johan got a pretty good understanding of other people's emotions,the way he twist-turns his sayings to break a person internally and make them do whatever he want,is not something psychopaths do.
