For someone who was introduced so late into the story, Grimmer quickly became the story’s most fascinating character and everybody’s favorite. I loved Tenma so much but Grimmer was more than just a character to me…he was a feeling. All hail the Magnificient Steiner❤

@@mr.prince7681 well Tenma is too pure for this world. He's perfect protagonist for the series where Johan is the antagonist. Whereas both Grimmer and Johan came from the same circumstances. Both are the monsters, Johan manipulates innocents but Grimmer kills the bad guy. Both smiles like angels, Johan smiles to manipulate people but Grimmer forces to smile to spread positivity. Both don't have emotions, Johan became psychopath but Grimmer chose to find emotions to be human. That's the beauty of Grimmer's character. That's why I said that Grimmer compliments the ideology of good vs evil in the series.

You have no idea how happy I am that you made a video about Grimmer. What a surprise. Most people just talk about Johan (which is deserved) but I always felt that the entire cast of Monster is just so damn good. Urusawa just somehow has the ability to make the most despicable characters but also the nicest and purest. His characters just seem so oddly realistic. It’s like he can hit every spectrum of human characteristics.

If someone interprets it that way it would be of no use and only lead to sadness. It could be much more useful if we look at it another way. If life has no meaning then we can give it our own meaning. If nothing matters then it liberates us in a way. I watched a video on 'Optimistic Nihilism' it was pretty interesting.

Usually the main protagonist is the antithesis of the antagonist, but not Monster. Grimmer is the opposite of Johan. One thing I like about the Monster manga is how it potrays mature characters as the pivotal actors in the story. It shows their acts of weakness, but also strength and bravery. Where manga and anime in general largely focus on an younger cast, the majority of the main characters in Monster and middle-aged and above, making scenes when their act with kids all the more heartfelt. This is especially noticeable with Grimmer.

I liked Grimmer a lot because he seemed so much different from Johan. While Johan is an emotionless monster who manipulates children into doing horrible things to try to satisfy his own ambitions, Grimmer tried to live a better life, tried to be a better person, tried to enjoy life, and was really kind towards children. It was really sad to see such a great character die. I would love to see a spinoff with him going over the things he went through in his life right until his death. I even kind of respected the Magnificent Steiner within him because to me he felt like a juggernaut of justice taking out horrible people who deserve it like he did during his final act.

Johan never had an identity. His mother raised them both as "Anna" to conceal the presence of the twins. She raised Johan to avenge her and his father, and she left them abandoned when she got the chance to do so. Nina/Anna is just as a monster, but the monster in her died when she lost her memories and got raised as Nina Fortner. When she is put into hypnosis, her Monster comes out again, and she was not in Kinderheim 511. So having the memories of what happened in Pray is was made them monsters.

I think he's my favourite take on emotional complexity in media, period.

I think Grimmer is my favorite character as well. I can relate to him most. Due to depression and the like I've bottled up emotions for at least a decade. The moment he was able to feel again was cathartic in ways. I hope I can get there too. I feel like a lot of us bury our problems and just work and get by day to day, but don't truly feel or live. Some of us can do that while from that outside looking in, people will see happy/successful people with a family/loved ones. Then there are others like myself that cannot allow themselves to get close to others and just do not know how to stop being alone. Haven't read the Manga but the anime was awesome; I just finished it today.

Living your whole life with bottled up emotions and not being capable to externalize them is hell. U desperately try to escape from the loneliness, but u can be loved only if u expose yourself and learn to be more intimate with others. Even if the vast majority of them will not have interest, or will try to harm u, u can't let that get to u. Only by not taking that personally, u will find it more and more comfortable to live with yourself, despite what the others think. And then, before u will realize it, u will start to get surrounded by people that actually like u

Amazing video. I watched Monster for the first time back in January and Grimmer was by far my favourite character. I just love how even though he’s been through so many horrible things- losing his whole identity and emotions- he still tries to treat people with kindness, especially children. That bridge scene got to me a lot. And his death scene where he says his emotions finally came back was so beautiful. I also really liked Lunge as a character even though his whole thing was just being obsessed with Tenma lol. Idk having the detective character be sort-of an antagonist was fun, he reminds me of L from Death Note in that way. I read a really great fic on AO3 that fleshes out both Grimmer and Lunge as characters, as well as the world they live in, it’s called So Much To Say. I’d recommend checking it out, it is slash but it’s not explicit or anything and I’d say the relationship aspect is very tastefully handled.

I really liked how Urasawa wrote Lunge too. Yes he's the best detective in Germany but at what cost? He neglected his family so much they ended up leaving him. He had a cold personality. Always striving to solve cases but was so broken and confused when Tenma wasn't the perpetrator. Watching Lunge slowly recognizing his mistakes and discovering the truth was satisfying to watch.

Most of the people defend the ending but I am still pissed off. And the book doesn't solve much. Monsters built up so much and when you expected to pay off it didn't.
