Great video, and I will be using this information on my project. One question though, what determines the angle that is set on the compound. I want to end up with a I/2 in end on the small end and 7/8 ' on the large end with an overall length of 1 1/8 long on the knob I am making.....Thanks ...Ken...Marina CA

+Kenneth Bartlett ( D1-D2)/2L, where D1 is large diameter, D2 is smaller diameter and L is length which you want taper. here you go.......

D-d/2l multiply by tan inverse u will get the angle theta

Kenneth Bartlett of course it's angle at which u need to taper. How r u going to use his angle u should know it urself . Either u should directly know angle of taper or two diameter from original dia and final reduced dia. Then use trigonometry to find taper angle from that

Internal Taper??

Use same compound setting as for external taper, switch to cutting on the back side while running lathe in reverse. Results in internal female taper that matches angle of external male taper.
