Klonopin/Xanax took over my life from age 16 to 42, starting at .5 mg daily and climbing to 6 mg-all prescribed by doctors. Now, at 44, I’m still dealing with PAWS and realizing my anxiety wasn't actually worsening over those decades; it was withdrawals I didn’t recognize. No one ever warned me about the risks of long-term benzo use, and I feel like someone should be held accountable for the lack of transparency about the dangers. Perhaps I should tell my story sometime.

I was prescribed Lithium and Klonopin by a psychiatrist during a stay in a mental health hospital when I was misdiagnosed as bi-polar. I never took the Lithium because I Googled it and discovered it was potentially toxic. I took the Klonopin a few times, but quit because I didn't feel it did anything. My new psychiatrist informed me that I had dodged a bullet. He told me that getting off benzodiazepines is "hell'. I was already suffering, I didn't need hell. I struggle with depression and anxiety like so many others. I am glad my life wasn't ruined by this medication.

I was coaxed to ‘go ahead and take it’, encouraged these drugs were safe and effective, at a time when every young adult is struggling with college and finding their place in the world. Not only was it not effective, it was severely mentally emotionally physically damaging. How can you even live when you get very ill from a drug that’s supposed to help you with your normal life anxiety? Instead of helping, my whole life fell apart for at least a decade because I couldn’t function anymore. THESE DRUGS ARE PURE POISON. You can’t even get compensation because they sneakily throw you under a bus and say ‘’this is your anxiety problem getting worse”. They dismiss those who commit suicide because of the drug in the very same way. They just say, ‘’well they were already mentally ill. That’s why it happened’’…. It’s CRIMINAL!! They even KNOW about these severe adverse effects, but they still will not admit it.

Thank you to both of you for this moving podcast and thank you for the extremely important work you are doing Dr. Josef to educate patients - and other doctors - about the risks of taking psychiatric drugs. Everything that I have heard in your podcasts from yourself and the people you speak to resonates. At one stage over the past twenty years I was on six different medications, including sleeping pills. I am off all of them now except for klonopin, which is proving the hardest to taper - down to only a crumb but it’s still there. I regret I ever went down the road of thinking that pills would solve my problems and that there was something chemically amiss in my brain which made it necessary. (I was told I had to be on a so-called “mood stabiliser” the rest of my life because I was bipolar and it is now obvious that this is completely untrue. ) I had very little support from the medical community, I had to taper mainly using my own instincts and research.

I had started a comment. Not sure where it went so I will give the shortest version. Put on Klonopin, only medication for anxiety that I wasn't aware of. I came off because I ran out and could not refill. After 6 days, I began hallucinating,,started jerking or shaking physically and in my voice. I was aware. I knew it wasn't a seizure . My husband took me to an ER that was manged by a PA that particular night who had worked with alcoholics who were placed on Klonopin before leaving rehab. After the appropriate tests he said he was sure it was the Klonopin and that you should never come off cold turkey and I was fortunate to not have a seizure. He said you have to taper off klonopin long term. He said I could go back on and then taper. I didn't. Thr shaking subsided, thank God I went through months of mental and physical hell. A hell that i didn't know you could experience and not die. I wanted to die not because I didn't want to kive. I just wanted to not live with this suffering.. I did not sleep for 2 weeks. no matter what I took. I was very anxious, depressed, feelings of dread, physical pain in my legs. I found out that doctors really don't know about tapering or tolerance withdrawal which means you haven't I increased your dosage but you are have developed tolerance withdrawal on your prescribed dose. These benzodiazopens were never meant for over 2 weeks. I found a book by Dr Peter Breggin, Harvard trained psychiatrist, who has written extensively, testified to congress, medical witness in criminal cases about the dangers of all psychiatric medications and how addictive they are. The benzodiazopens only take about 2 weeks. Klonopin is not something I craved more of. I wasn't high. He said to never come off cold turkey but if you had been off a week don't go back on because that could be more dangerous. Tapering has to,be long with only a fifth or 10th of medicine every 2 weeks or a month when down to last 1/10th. I was fortunate. My doctor was sympathetic but didn't know about it's destruction. She put me on gabapebtin for leg pain.i decided to stop after 3 months. I began having auditory hallucinations. and became paranoid. Healthy people have committed suicide after being on gabapentin for a few days. One night I could not sleep. This was about 2 weeks off gabapentin. I prayed. I almost drifted off when suddenly I wanted to kill myself. I was not suicidal. I was screaming,, looking for a gun. My husband just held me until I calmed down. I am not high drama. I read 3 of his books. One is about 25 years old. I educated myself. Our health care system is,broken. Not just psychiatric meds. The industry has captured the public regulators and medical curriculum. Also our elected officials receive large donations for their campaigns. The Pharmaceu companies are a business model. We need to realize that our health does not come from a chemical that we are missing even though some short term might,be necessary. The industry doesn't have a goal of cures . A cure would stop the lifetime "maintenance " model.

I took Xanax daily for about four years, and it got to the point where I felt so horrible that I was able to quit almost cold turkey. I weaned off of 5-6mg/day over about two weeks, only because I was afraid of seizures if I stopped too fast. Fortunately I didn’t have any withdrawal symptoms, and in fact, I felt pretty amazing for a few months. I probably could have been diagnosed as bipolar at the time, if I had seen a psychiatrist. It was like a switch flipped and my brain turned back on after being in “standby” mode for four years. I feel so bad for people who deal with PAWS, and I’m so grateful i haven’t experienced that.

Wow. I'll gladly let you in on to the fact that I have only heard the same story as yours from one person and guess what, he's my friend. I was very surprised when he told me he just stopped and no withdrawals were experienced. Glad for you, girl. What's your diet like please? Thank you.

Usually it’s easier to wean off it if it’s your first time using it consistently. Don’t ever get back on it though, as it gets harder and harder to wean off each time you start taking it again. This was the case with me. First time using it after a year I weaned off no real issues. I restarted a few years later and it was much more difficult to wean the second time.

Ever since Liam Payne passed away Klonopin has been making news headlines for legitimate zero legitimate reason

You obviously ignore the work / research of Dr. Heather Ashton and the Ashton manual. These drugs are known to be profoundly damaging AT LEAST SINCE 50 YEARS AGO. Not only Liam was damaged by these but more than probably: Chris Cornell, Taylor Hawkins, Del Shannon, Heath Ledger, etc. And thousands of non famous persons like me. Are you an MD or a big pharma to feel entitled to tell these persons what experience they had with these substances? Best wishes.

Commented on here before, stopped clonazepam after 20 years, 16 years on 8 mg. It was 3 years of hell, I have been off 1 year 5 months finally starting to let up, lost everything doing including entire family. I also have severe nerve damage to all 4 of my limbs, I got Saturday night Palsy on 4 different occasions needing over 7 surgical procedure to get some use in my left and right hand. Doctor that gave in to me denies BIND, and no other doctor once to touch another doctors mistakes. Sometimes, I wonder if it was worth It to stop, to get people back in my life, just to push them further away.
