Tapestry Crochet Tutorial
In this video I explain and demonstrate how to do tapestry crochet using the UK tr stitch (this is the same as the US dc stitch).
I hope you can see that it is a really easy but also fun and versatile technique. If you have any questions at all though, please let me know in the comments section.

Thanks Catherine! Very clear explanation, now on to practicing and planning for the cara blanket. I love the simplicity of the design and of course those lovely hearts. I think you are so brave to do these videos! Talking, crocheting, and doing the video all at once, wow!

We get a Beautiful outcome from this technique but it's a yarn consumer. By carrying the yarn we waste meters especially if the distance between each color is long. Thank you for the explanation .

Hello, thanks for your comment and sorry this was missed. Yes, for long colour changes a different technique like intarsia would probably use less yarn and might be more suitable. However, for short colour changes tapestry crochet is great.

Catherine, I love the midnight diamond pattern but have trouble with the slip stitch at the end of the round. I feel like I’m one stitch to the right of center. Could you please do a video showing how to complete say rounds 2-5 so I can see exactly how it’s done? I’ve already done a whole blanket but that means I’ve finished 400 rounds feeling very unsure if I’m doing it right. I’m starting another Midnight Diamond blanket and don’t want to struggle for another 400 round slip stitches. Thanks so much. Truly a beautiful pattern!

So after I wrote my question, I realized the answer was right there. The end/beginning of the round is intact 1 stitch to the right of center 🤦‍♀️. Once I got that cleared up it’s been smooth sailing. I’m working my final square today.

I've done some blankets using the tapestry technique, but I didn't know about the little trick of bringing the second color to the next row by crossing the two yarns. I like that idea. One suggestion is be sure to center your hands and work in front of the camera. There were a couple of points near the end of the video where the stitch you were making was not completely visible. I often rely heavily on seeing exactly where the hook is being placed when learning a new pattern. Thank you for your patterns and ideas!

Hi, thanks for your comment and the suggesting. Yes, I know my hands unfortunately weren’t always centred in the camera for this - sorry about that! It’s on my list to film this again now my filming technique has improved a bit. Hopefully, I’ll be able to do it soon. Best wishes

Is this technique for just 2 colors? Is this different than graphgan? Thank you
@catherinecrochets
@catherinecrochets 2 ай бұрын
Hi, thanks for your question. Often just 2 colours are used but you can use more (some of my patterns do). I think (although I'm not 100% sure) that a graphgan blanket could be made with other colourwork techniques besides (just) tapestry crochet. I think "graphgan" just means making a blanket following a colourwork chart or graph. So it could be with C2C or intarsia crochet, and not necessarily tapestry crochet. Hope that helps!

Hi, thanks for your comment. This was my first try at a tutorial and I realised after I finished that I had strayed quite a lot unfortunately. This is definitely something I need to work on in future and try a slightly different set-up maybe so that this doesn't happen. Thanks for the feedback though - I appreciate it!

Hello, Thanks for your question :) Yes, it does work with more than two colours. I've used as many as four before. I have another tutorial about using more than 2 yarns here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/eoWxhJR7nappgq8 and also a blog post which goes into a bit more detail about some of the things you might want to consider when using more than 2 yarns: catherinecrochets.com/how-to-tapestry-crochet-with-multiple-colours/ Hope that helps! x

Hi, thanks for your question! I'm not sure I have a favourite method as such, I just do it as usual really. But when crocheting motifs (squares, hexagons), this video shows how I end each round and carry the yarns up to start the next one: kzbin.info/www/bejne/b6Slc4Rnhteil9U Hope that helps!

How do you keep your yarn from getting tangled?
@catherinecrochets
@catherinecrochets 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Joni - that's a great question and one I'm hoping to do a tutorial on soon (as it's easier to show than explain!). The short answer for now is to always "drop" one yarn towards the front of you work when you drop it, and the other yarn towards the back. That way, they don't end up getting twisted. Hope that helps! Hopefully I'll be able to make a quick video tutorial on this soon too. xx

Hi Penny, thanks so much for your feedback! I know what you mean about that and I definitely need to practise this a bit more! It was much harder than I'd thought trying to keep my work in the centre of the camara view while I was crocheting and I will definitely try to improve on that for next time. Thank you! x
