Tapestry how to play using the Automa Factory with a quick review

I may be wrong, but you roll the science die to set favorite track only for the shadow empire. The Automa has their favorite track defined by the chosen civilization card (Conquerors/Engineers/Explorators/Scientists), as noted by the heart symbol on said cards.
