I'm a handweaver! Although I've never seriously attempted tapestry weaving, I always figured it'd be easier than using a floor, table, or rigid heddle loom due to the calculations and all the equipment... however, I didn't consider the design process! I just found your channel a couple of weeks ago and I'm loving it! Weaver-tube is my new favorite thing

I’m a handweaver and I’m just having a go at tapestry. I absolutely love the idea of handweaving as a master craft and tapestry as an art. I’m going to start thinking of it like that. I’d love you to make some more videos on this subject. Maybe something along the lines of where the crossover is in your own practice. How one informs the other to give rise to a cohesive body of work. It seems as if your colour palettes are similar. Do you do some of each every day? Is one more a morning task and one an afternoon kind of task?

Ok, that sounds like it could be a whole separate video - art vs craft? Stay tuned!!

How exciting to be at the beginning of your weaving journey!!

I feel like tapestry is the opposite of tablet weaving because in tablet weaving you only see the warp and none of the weft threads!
@ThreefoldDesigns11 ай бұрын
Yes, you're right! I don't know much about tablet weaving, but it sounds like fun :)

@@ThreefoldDesigns it's very fun, good for making strong straps, belts, etc, because of the way the warp is twisted together. If you're curious I recommend this channel: youtube.com/@elewysoffinchingefeld3066?si=cSUO7AjxtgyWi63t She's really good and I basically learned using her videos

I learned tapestry first, because it was free. I already had yarn and tapestry needles from crocheting. I got a library book on off-loom weaving which had a section on carboard looms. I made a little pouch with no sewing! Tapestry on cardboard is usually done selvedge to selvedge, with various techniques to minimize draw-in. You can now purchase packs of pre-notched cardboard looms for teaching children. A cardboard loom can be cut into any shape. One artist uses clothing patterns to cut out looms from large boxes and make custom clothing. I now use tapestry looms and also do a little rigid heddle weaving. Tapestry is much easier on arthritic bodies than handweaving, in my opinion. My shoulders don't ache from it. Thanks for this excellent video!

Thanks for taking the time to comment - that's really interesting, I didn't think that tapestry would be better than handweaving ergonomically! Maybe it's the way I do tapestry weaving, haha! :)

Hi Michelle. Cheeky question. When you do your weaving and you are doing some of the background which covers the entire width of the piece do you weave from selvage to selvage? Thanks Caroline.
@ThreefoldDesigns3 жыл бұрын
Hey Caroline! No, never! The only time I do that is when I do the hem (see previous video!). If you weave selvedge to selvedge on a tapestry, those edges will start to pull in ... So the technique is to do large blocks of colour in parts called 'lazy lines' ... I'll record an example in my next studio vlog 😉
@carolinebukowski74673 жыл бұрын
Thanks Michelle that would be great. Must admit that you have motivated me to have a go at tapestry weaving. I am already a weaver of cloth but new challenges and all that. I thought that this vlog was great and the distinction clear and precise. Keep ‘em coming. Cx 🌼.

I think that doing what you want and not giving a **** about what anyone else 'allows' you to do is the height of creativity :) Thanks for your kind comments ... the colour changes every 3 months, but the styles been pretty much the same for the last 27 years, lol!!
