Hey there! I uploaded this video over 3 years ago, and have since made an update version of it. You can find that here; kzbin.info/www/bejne/hnu9aJKbrbKtbrs Since this one still seems to help a lot of people, I keep it uploaded instead of deleting it. Just want to say though, I saw and fixed that knocked over bead before I finished the sprite. Sorry it seems to bothers so many of you!

This was very interesting. I have done perler bead projects for years and with my daughter when she was in scouts. I don't know that we ever did anything so big that we had to pieces or needed to use painters tape. But I am once again doing this craft on my own & doing bigger projects so this was information for me. Thank you. Plan on watching your better version.

When I use the tape method, I don't use my fingers to secure the beads on the tape because I think it takes to much time, instead I use a rolling pin because it's bigger and faster.

Thank you for these tips!!! You answered a lot of questions I had! LOL When I do larger pieces, they come out distorted. I've been using masking tape, and I poke holes into them. Problem with that-Yes, the masking tape is sticky, so I have to clean out the leftover glue. Sometimes the torn masking tape (from poking holes) will melt into the beads (such a meticulous, difficult, and annoying task to remove tiny bits of tape.) I've tried different methods to flatten it and cool it down with NO luck LOL I used a book-the book left a weird pattern on my perler. I've used a towel between the perler with something heavy on top-still comes out distorted. I was getting kind of bummed out that they weren't coming out flat!!! LOL However, I've enjoyed the process, being creative, learning from my mistakes, choosing a design I really like, and I love that there are so many video game designs that I can use. :)

+Caitie Hall Thank you for letting me know how you liked it! I find that if you leave the piece on the icepack side for too long, it does still curl slightly. Try flipping it a few extra times and it should even the cooling out a bit more and reduce the warping!

Hello, thank you for showing me how to do this.I haven't actually tried this craft yet.After watching your video (and others) I went online and purchased a tub of 10,000 Hama beads with a few peg boards.I know I will have to buy other things but as yet I have no idea what. lol. Luckily I do have 2 glass cutting mats, but nothing else that you have.... yet!!! Oh, and one other thing, thank you for allowing your dog to make a racket and enjoy his or her toys! So many ppl filming shoo the dog away, remove the toy or put out of the room.Really annoys me when that happens, ppl don't seem to realize it is the dogs home too. Anyway, I just wanted to say thanks! I've subscribed to your channel.

Welcome to the world of fuse beads! :) The main things you really need to actually start are just beads, pegboards, ironing paper (Or parchment paper), an iron and something heavy to weight sprites down as they cool. The other things I mention are just part of how I specifically cool my sprites, which for me makes things a bit easier. I hope you enjoy the craft and thanks for your comment :D

Manic Made Geekery... Thank you so much for replying! You've made my day! ; ) I've been watching all your vids for past 2 hours and some last night. The problem I have is, I can't find the special tweezers online. Any suggestions on what I should try first, please ?...
@ManicMadeGeekery7 жыл бұрын
The tweezers I use were from a surplus supply store here in my city, but if you don't have anything like that locally, I've heard eyebrow tweezers work really well. Plus they come in a range of fancy colors and patterns! I haven't tried eyebrow tweezers myself, but I know a couple people who have recommended them. Perhaps you can find those instead? You really only need a pair of pointed tweezers, so they don't have to be special or anything. Just look for some that have a pointy tip instead of rounded edges, cause the rounded edges probably don't go as well into the beads!
@loominjeanie33917 жыл бұрын

Your method works partly because of the painters tape but also helps that you remove the wax paper or ironing paper, multiple times throughout the ironing process, this allows for fumes or air caused by the heat to have an escape, if someone continues to ironing the fumes build up between every bead because the beads get “sealed” on the bottom by the tape and top by the paper…Great technique…

Thank you for this video! I saw your video a long time ago, and I'm just starting to test this method for the fist time. I finally had some time to finish one of my perlers! I'm so happy with my results! I used the old methods that left bits of masking tape melted into the perlers-headache to remove and at times couldn't completely remove all those masking tape bits that melted into some of my beads. :/ It was really annoying for me to put in so much time in placing each bead on a board and then seeing bits of tape in the perler after ironing. It's okay! Creating a perler is fun, and they all teach me what to do better the next time around! Your method eliminated warping, poking holes into the tape, and prevented me from over melting some of my beads. Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! LOL I'm so happy with these results! >I have a few questions, and I will include what I did. I think you might have answered some of my questions in this video, and if you did, I'm sorry! 1. How long do you iron each perler and at what temperature did you set your iron? I set my iron at Medium, and I ironed for 10 seconds. I then removed the iron for another 10 seconds to prevent perler from overheating and melting. 2. How long do you leave your perler on the cold station before flipping perler? Do you leave the 2 litter bottle of water overnight on top of the perler? I've seen other videos where people say to leave a weight on your perler overnight so it doesn't warp (doesn't always work).
@ManicMadeGeekery6 жыл бұрын
I'm so glad this helped! Here's the answers to your questions! (Sorry for the long comment!) Each piece is going to take a different amount of time, and each iron will be different. Even the same brand and model will have variations between them, for example I replaced my iron with the same model but the new one actually required me to iron at a higher temperature than the last one. But my general rule is to start with a lower temperature so the beads don't melt almost instantly when you put the iron to them, and if you're finding that they aren't fusing as easily as you'd like, turn it up a bit. But make sure you give the iron like 30 or so seconds to fully reach that new temp before you try to jump it up more, because it might just be slow to heat and jumping it up twice would probably make it much hotter than you'd planed for. For the length of time I iron each piece for, as I said it'd varies! I believe I showed it in this video as well, but if not I know I explain it in my newer version (Linked in the pinned comment.), what I do is lift the paper to see how much the beads have melted. You can see them melting though the ironing paper a bit, less with parchment though, but sometimes it's deceiving. So I slide my iron and lift the paper to get a clear look and see if they are fused to my liking. There is no dead set rule for how your melt should look (and I hope no one tells you that!) so just watch your beads until they look how you want! You only need to leave it there until the beads are cold! Normally if you're just putting books or anything heavy (such as the 2l bottles.) on them and leaving them, they will take much longer to cool all the way. But by putting them on something very cold the ice packs pull the heat out much faster. Again it kinda depends on the size of the sprite, but something the size of you hand probably only needs like 3 minutes per side! The biggest thing with the cooling station stuff is to make sure you flip the sprite before it's fully cooled. If one side gets colder than the other does then it tends to warp a bit. Not as bad as leaving it full uncovered to cool mind you! Hopefully this answers your questions! If not feel free to ask me to clarify :D Thank so much for watching! Happy beading

Awsome video! I like your method for adding adjacent pieces on. Just an idea/ suggestion to add, you can use the masking tape or 2 liter bottle to roll over the tape to apply pressure quickly before flipping. Also for poking holes, I like to use the small 29x29 pegboards and smush them right over the tape side sammich style. poking 841 holes all at once :P
@ManicMadeGeekery8 жыл бұрын
+Darrick Thanks for the tips! I don't peel my sprites from the board, so the beads just need to stick enough that they don't fall all over the place when I'm ironing. As for hole poking, I don't do that either haha but for those who do that is a helpful hint!

i've been beading for years, and i thought that the whole "poking holes" method was the one that was most common haha. i never poke any of my pieces, bit or small and have never had any of what you call puckering happen. different irons and tapes and supplies i guess reel in different results. it's always an experience watching other people work. i can't understand how people can work with tweezers either though, they slow me down x1000 lol Nice job though! i finally got around to recording me making an order yesterday and it was a majora's mask too! keep up the good work.

+BadgerCreations Yea, I always hear how it's almost 100% mandatory or your sprite will be totally ruined if you don't poke holes. I have never had any issues my self, and will probably never poke holes in any of my sprites haha. But I do know its a problem for others so it was worth mentioning! As for the tweezers, I can't work without them! I am SO slow with out them and I fumble all over the place. It's awful. Thank you and thanks for the comment! :)

I've used the tape method but what I don't like about it is my beads always melt too much but the heat from the iron will make your peg board wilt which is a pain because they are not cheap. The board itself will eventually melt as well.
@ManicMadeGeekery8 жыл бұрын
If your beads are melting too much, you might want to turn down the heat. I use the "Cotton" setting on my iron, which is a bit less then full heat.

Have you ever tried clear packing tape? That’s what I’ve been using because it’s what I got. It seems way to easy to mess it up but what is nice is that you can see the difference between the beads that are stuck on the tape and the ones that are not.

How can you tell when you're supposed to stop ironing? Some of the beads fuse and some of them don't for me.
@ManicMadeGeekery8 жыл бұрын
I don't stop ironing until I know everything has been melted, that's the easiest way to make sure everything is fused. If you do the peel and lift method I do in this video it makes it much easier to tell what parts are under ironed. If you don't want to lift the paper, you can still kinda of see when beads are melted more. They tend to stick a bit to the paper, at least the Perler paper, so you can see them melting. I can't really give you an exact time to stop since each sprite is different!

If I wanted to do a full melt and have no holes showing, how long would I need to iron it?
@ManicMadeGeekery8 жыл бұрын
It varies based on your ironing and your technique. I can't give you an exact time because I don't know how hot your iron gets, how much pressure you use or how big your sprites are. I can say if you want a full melt it's best to take it slow. I'd recommend a medium to high heat as I normally do, but use less pressure and go slowly. I don't normally do a full melt myself, but I've noticed when I accidentally do make them melt fully its because I was moving slower then normal!

Who dislikes this video? lol...very well done. I'm surprised about the lack of puckering--I'm going to have to experiment with the painters tape. How long would you say you ironed the first side (the back) for, and what temp/setting did you use? I find a lot of times some of my beads are over cooked while others aren't melted at all (I call it microwaving. Actually, no I don't...I just made that up now). Also, I've been doing a lot bigger pieces recently (2'x1', 3'x4', etc), how would you apply this method to something that big? More glass cutting boards and ice packs, or would you do that in pieces? Thanks again for the great vid!
@ManicMadeGeekery9 жыл бұрын
+ojuditho I didn't even notice this had dislikes haha, but that's a good question! Ah well. Since I never used masking tape, only the green painters tape from the beginning, I'm not 100% sure if that's what prevents the puckering, or if its because I don't do a flat melt, or both. I can't give you an exact time for how long I took, because each piece is different (And I don't recall for this exact project). The size of them really dictates how long you iron for to get the consistent melt. A smaller sprite would take less then a minute where as something huge like the mural of 27,000+ beads I made took over an hour to do one side. For the temperature/setting I use cotton, which on my iron is the 3rd down from the hottest. But again, that can change depending on the iron. I went through 4 (Very expensive.) irons before returning each one and buying the cheapest Sunbeam one they had which works perfectly. Microwaving is a perfect term for it! I'm gonna make that a thing now haha! For cooling larger pieces then the cutting board I just move it around and bend slightly as needed. I'll try and explain that without getting too wordy haha. If your piece is bigger then your cooling area, as long as the thing your cooling on is completely flat, in my case a glass cutting board, you can just press your finished piece onto it until it sucks the heat out. Move it around on the cooling surface to get parts that would otherwise be hanging off the edges, and carefully bend them in the opposite direction of the curve it's trying to do if you need to. The other way I used to cool things was to hold the sprite in front of a cool breeze, like an A/C unit or a fan in a cold window, and manhandle the sprites back and forth until they stayed flat. I never iron things in pieces because you get obvious lines where the parts tried to connect. I did this for the first attempt of part of my mural, and you can see the lines on the bottom in this picture. pkmnmastertash-creations.tumblr.com/image/91094828370 What I did there was iron the back normally, then I only very lightly ironed the front so they would still fuse to the other pieces. I think I had to cut apart the backs a bit with a craft knife to get them to line up right again though. So sorry for the long reply, I wanted to answer your questions the best I could haha! Thanks so much for watching! Hope this method helps you out! :)

@ManicMadeGeekery7 жыл бұрын
Hello! @ManicMadeGeekery8 жыл бұрын
+CuchlTam Both, I mostly use it to make sure my beads all stay together when I'm ironing. Less chance of them falling over if they are adhered to something instead of just sitting on the pegboards! That and it makes it much easier for me to make a flip over large projects and then just connect them without making any seams. This method also preserves your pegboards, which is a bonus!

wow this may be the solution I'm lookin for. So you didn't end up having a curl at all once it was done on the ice packs? how long do you keep it on each side for the ice pack part? good video
@ManicMadeGeekery8 жыл бұрын
+AngstLollita When cooling with the ice packs it drastically reduces both the cooling time and the amount it curls. You will still need something to keep the sprites flat, hence the glass cutting boards. You kinda gotta go by feel when cooling the sprites, smaller ones need less time and larger ones will need more time. I normally check on them and if its starting to feel cold to the touch on the one side I flip it over to cool the other side. If you cool one side too much it does still curl a bit, but significantly less then when I used to use a heavy book. Hope this helps a bit more :)

Great tutorial. I still struggle with the tape method, so I'll try it with your type of tape. Where did you get your little bead boxes? Are they drawers? If you could let me know what brand, etc, my life will be almost perfect. Oh, and thanks for fueling my addiction!

I've heard of people using clear tape with no issues, but I personally wouldn't. If your tape is too sticky it will pull apart your sprite when you try to remove it if the sprite is still warm. Also if the tape has a low melting point it could melt to your sprite and leave residue behind on the beads, which is something I've seen happen before. I highly recommend painters tape.

+Rachelle Crabtree I have a couple, one of them is from Herrschners; www.herrschners.ca/product/perler%26%23174-+beads+super-sized+clear+peg+board.do and the others I've got from my local Micheals!

How do you tell that some part need more ironing?
@ManicMadeGeekery6 жыл бұрын
Depending on your preference for the way it looks in the end, you just take a look at it! When you pull back the parchment paper/ironing paper to move it around you can then see the beads clearly. If you're like myself and like a partial melt, you can see what spots need more melting and what spots don't need any more. This helps with a full melt too because you can see if any spots haven't got enough melting done yet!

Where did you get that super pegboard??? I’ve been looking for one for ever!!!
@ManicMadeGeekery7 жыл бұрын
Hello! I'd originally purchased one from Micheal's, but they seem to be phasing out their Perler stock in favor of their own branded melty beads, so you might not be able to find one there anymore. I bought another from Herrschners.ca at a later date, which you can find here! www.herrschners.ca/product/perler%26%23174-+beads+super-sized+clear+peg+board+accessory.do?from=Search&cx=0 Though that is in Canadian dollars, so if you are outside of Canada it might be different. Hope that helps!

I order mine from Herrschners since they have the best prices for shipping in Canada. You can get the 1000 bead bags from here, www.herrschners.ca/product/perler%26%23174-+beads+1%2C000+bead+packs.do or do a search and they have a few colors for 6000 bead bags too!

Wow... you say your super pegboard was USD$15? It's now (2.5 years later) over USD$64 on Amazon... Un-believable!! Thanks for your video. I will be buying the wide painter's tape, and a couple of Cryopaks from Dollarama at your suggestion. I would've used something to protect my table surface. Great video, thanks.

Definitely don’t buy it for that! They’re still $20 or less on Perler’s website.

This was a very useful introduction to the art of beads. I'm planning on starting with beads myself. Why did you use gloves?
@ManicMadeGeekery7 жыл бұрын
Glad you found the video helpful! I use the gloves because the sprites get very hot while you iron them. Wearing gloves makes it less painful to handle the hot sprites!

How long do you ice the project for on each side?
@ManicMadeGeekery8 жыл бұрын
It depends on the size of the sprite really. The smaller ones only need about a minute on each side, maybe even less. Larger sprites need a bit longer. I normally check and feel it while it's cooling to see if the one side feels cold. If it's still warm I'll leave it a little longer, and if it's cold I'll flip it over!

Something about that size probably took about 15 minutes? I don't normally time my self, but I do iron fairly quickly.

I've got them at Micheal's before but also purchased one online from Herrschners. You can find the one online here www.herrschners.ca/product/perler%26%23174-+beads+super-sized+clear+peg+board+accessory.do but that is also their Canadian site. I'm not sure if they have it on their US one. You can also check Hobby Lobby or Jo'ann's, from what I've heard they have them too.

You can use parchment paper, but I personally don't like to. I use the ironing paper that Perler sells. It has a slightly different texture that I find more appealing then parchment paper.

I cant do perler beads anymore because the iron is costing a lot in the electric bill
@craftmamanl8 жыл бұрын
then your iron is a bit broken.. they don't use that much of electric
@craftybow66008 жыл бұрын
+Craftmama idk because i have different kind of iron
@craftmamanl8 жыл бұрын
+Crafty Bow Irons use 1100 watts to the max.. iff you iron for about 15 minutes, it costs you about 25 cent! So I don't think that is the reason why your bill is high!
@craftybow66008 жыл бұрын
+Craftmama idk if my mom just lied so i wont use the iron any more or my brother keep ironing his clothes every day after he uses them
@carolynsevers7608 жыл бұрын
+Crafty Bow Compare the electric bill from before and after you stopped perler stuff...if there's pretty much no difference, then clearly your perler bead hobby is NOT the problem. If there IS a huge difference, something is wrong with the iron or elsewhere in the household.
@2tinytumblers429 жыл бұрын
can someone tell me the point of this method??
@ManicMadeGeekery9 жыл бұрын
+2tinytumblers The point of this method is to mostly preserve your pegboards. Repeated heating of the plastic pegboards can cause the boards to warp and become unusable. I also use this method to piece together large sprites so that I can fuse them as one piece instead of ironing them as smaller parts then attempting to fuse them together as a whole.

very awesome the way you cool them is amazing! I usually use book and they leave lines in the piece!
@ManicMadeGeekery9 жыл бұрын
+Monica Jio I used to actually press them against the sliding glass door to our apartments balcony, but that only worked in the winter when the glass was cold. When summer came 'round I had to come up with a new way to cool them, and that's what I came up with haha. It works really well, and if you have a piece bigger then your cooling surface, you kinda just wanna slide it along one side and flip it so the whole thing cools evenly!
@icka8889 жыл бұрын
+PkmnMasterTash Creations! it's so funny cause I was cursing at my piece because it was burning me (well doing the iron and lift thing too) and it was curling. but this helped a lot. (i also don't do the hole punch thing either)
@ManicMadeGeekery9 жыл бұрын
+Monica Jio I totally recommend a pair of those cheap magic gloves. You can get em at the dollar store for like a buck haha. The only down side to them is the tape tends to stick to them when peeling it off. Other then that, it'll save your poor fingers from getting burnt!
@icka8889 жыл бұрын
+PkmnMasterTash Creations! I totally am gonna start using gloves! thank you so much I hope you put up more videos soon

@antoineasmar5848 жыл бұрын
Did anyone else not notice that it wasnt flipped during the cooling process... it curves like it did because of the weight of the bottle.. nothing to do with the movement of hot air, love it tho
@ManicMadeGeekery8 жыл бұрын
It's actually cooled on both sides. I normally put the sprite in with the way its curling to away from the ice packs under the first glass cutting board, so as they pull the heat from the sprite it starts to curl back towards the ice packs. The bottles are just to weight it down, similarly to how people use books.

You really don't need to poke holes, I've tried countless times with and without poking holes and noticed no difference whatsoever. people who claim that you need to poke holes otherwise it'll collapse and ruined your project are the same ones who have poor ironing techniques. Once you get a feel for ironing and taping and improve on this aspect it wont really matter if you poke holes or not. Ever Perler themselves say you don't need to poke holes. Just be patient and practice. Don't worry if you ruin a project or two...we all have it's the process of learning
@ManicMadeGeekery6 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the comment! The thing is every iron is different, tapes are different, and the person ironing is different. Just because I use a cheap sunbeam iron, a specific brand of painters tape, and what is for me a medium amount of pressure doesn't mean that someone who buys the same iron and tape and tries to use the same pressure that they'd get the same result. For some people poking holes is a must. Perhaps their irons run way hotter, they have thicker tape, and they press harder without realizing it. I'd encourage people to try both ways. If you want to poke holes and you get good results like that, good! Do that! If you don't want to poke holes, test with small sprites until you find a way that you can iron without poking! :) Often taking the tape off before full melting one side will prevent blowouts. But saying people have poor ironing techniques because they poke holes isn't really a fair thing to say. Also Perler is much more interested in the child market of their product, and not the artist side. I'm rather surprised they even published instructions on how to tape, but encouraging kids to poke tiny holes in the tape with some sort of sharp object may have been a bad idea.

Most of my work is based off of video game pixel art, which are called sprites! So I call these sprites, or bead sprites, because they are pretty much just a physical representation of pixel art. :)

Ironing paper is hella expensive. Parchment paper is cheap and works perfectly. But if your grandma keeps buying you that shit then awesome for you, but for everyone else parchment paper is fine.
@ManicMadeGeekery9 жыл бұрын
+n8rm Yes, it can be expensive but if you're using the same sheet multiple times, you get a lot of uses out of one package. I've used parchment paper before as well, and personally I find it doesn't work the same as the ironing paper. The parchment doesn't seem to stick to the beads the same, which makes it harder to see how much the beads have melted through the paper. It all comes down to personal choice really, I just prefer the ironing paper! :)
