i love how hilarious Caleb is, but what i love even more is how thoughtfully engaged he is with the issues that affect the people around him. we need more public figures like him who are able to bring people in with joy and laughter, but can also effectively keep them present at the table for tough, critical conversations. this is so so refreshing.

i never thought about tenant's rights until my second apartment. We asked them to fix our dishwasher and after they came to "fix it", they put an intent to evict notice under our door (because the dishwasher was backed up, and gross, and they took their sweet time coming to fix it). I've never felt so helpless and reliant upon the whim of an external factor and unstable in my housing, ever. We cleaned the apartment top to bottom and made a fuss about it and appealed and it ultimately got thrown out, but I will absolutely never forget the feeling of those two weeks of a piece of paper, out of absolutely nowhere, for truly no reason, about to make us homeless. We had parents we could have gone home to, we had a little bit of money saved, and my fiance had a really good job so we would have been "fine" but there's something about being threatened out of your home for no reason out of nowhere that shakes you to your core. I'll never forget it. We moved as soon as we could out of that shithole and we are now in Chicago, where tenants' rights are pretty strong, and our current landlord is honestly pretty good. But this is such an important issue, and I'm so glad to see that good people are in the corner fighting for tenants. thank you both!!

In Oklahoma, there were apartments that were selling the water rights to the bigger businesses that essentially were allowed to do whatever they wanted and charge whatever to people in leases unable to leave. The month they bought the water rights to the apartment my husband and I lived in a few years ago, the bill went from $70 to $145. They actually told us they refused to give us any documentation of the water usage by the end of it. Originally they tried to tell us there was no way to access the information because it was based on each building and that it was a breach of privacy, and after 6 months of fighting, I sent them documentation proving that was a lie and also coordinating with my all the neighbors to get their permissions as well to send in. After that, the excuse they gave was they needed permission from the owners so they couldn't supply proof, and when i got that, they just outright told me they refused. I spent 100s of hours on the phone and fighting them only to just have them outright refuse documentation because they knew it would prove they were taking advantage of everyone. Because the actually reality was there was no way on the month the business was sold that there was just 100% increase in usage, I had fought them from the first month until we moved out. 100s of people in leases who were legally not allowed to move were just charged whatever these big businesses wanted.

I am so grateful for you both and this podcast. I’m a KC native and everything I love about this city is exactly what you articulated. How I grew up, with the kids in my KCMO schools. We all loved each other regardless. But I know my privilege, even as a white child, let us all see each other as equal. I know now that isn’t true. So many kids I went to elementary and middle school with were suffering, and I didn’t know. I was raised by a single mom who had to choose between food and electricity some months. It wasn’t easy. But we certainly didn’t experience the racism and neglect that others did. All it did for me was make me want to fight for the good of where we came from. And stay to fight for those who don’t have a voice. Thank you for all you do. 💙

11:20 I LOVE Caleb asking such good, useful, actionable questions. This is sadly only one of a million things, but the first thing that popped into my head is MOLD. SO. MUCH. MOLD. I lived one place that had close to a third of the wall in one room just COVERED in mold. My health has never been the same since living there. The conditions of living in the USA are genuinely depleting our health and shaving years off our lifespans -or just abruptly ending them- in many instances.

Thank you for having Tara on the pod, Caleb! I’ve always been interested in community organizing, but I’ve never really known where to start. I’m a transplant in a major US city with no community organizing history or friends who are active in this way, so I’ve felt intimidated and, frankly, haven’t even known HOW to begin finding community impact groups to explore. I’m so grateful you dropped this clear (and inspiring!) example to my feed! I’m off to look up my community’s tenants union! Also you nailed it with the storytelling bit. Tara - you pulled me in and inspired me like it was nothing.

We inherited 9 of my mother in law’s rentals, all paid off in nice neighborhoods and coming from foster care and far below poverty, I know the struggle. I struggled so hard as a single teen mom, so we rent to underprivileged families, women who don’t qualify for section 8, so I’ll base their rent off their income, bc all income is profit except for taxes. We also own a construction business, so my husband does all the repairs and inspections. We also have a ton of kids, so we forgive A LOT of accidents. We’ve only had to evict a few after some very dangerous (cooking meth) situations. All the others move or expand after getting their lives ahead and want more or whatever. I love paying it forward.
