Tara, as a librarian who is about to start my own PhD I'm so delighted to hear your recommendation about engaging with librarians from day one! I work with a lot of PhD students in various disciplines and it always breaks my heart when I meet someone who is very late in their PhD journey and only just seeking my help. They invariably say they wish they'd done so sooner!

So true about research librarians. I am lucky to have snapped one up on my supervisory team. They really help me to glue things (information sources and even concepts) together.

Hm, I might have identified a problem in our program... We are supposed to have a finished proposal when starting, this is actually the document we apply with, which is a bit like you have to be a ready researcher before you enter the education to become one... Of course everyone knows that the project will likely change, but it now strikes me that this system can cause some clashes and ambivalence for the candidates.

My proposal had to be complete also, but I was told from the start that the proposal is a proposal and will change in the first stages of the programme.

You are amazing! I am currently a Master's student applying to PhD positions and this is so useful. The 30 minutes rule in the morning changed my life! All the best, Diana.
