2/2 The Mark of Beauty - Okinawan Houses

Okinawa's natural, subtropical beauty never ceases to attract travelers. The traditional houses with their red tiled roofs and coral walls are very much a part of that distinctive scenery, a product of the islands' history at the crossroads of Japan and China and also the heat and typhoons of the demanding climate. We focus this time on the distinctive beauty of Okinawan homes. Clear waters, coral beaches, paths paved with coral fragments and dark stonewalls, all together with the subtropical red roofs are intimate features of the distinctive Okinawan scenery. The exotic Okinawan houses are themselves fruits of both the special culture that flourished in between Japan and China and the harsh natural climate. The small, single-storied wooden houses provide sure defense against both typhoons and bright sunlight. The history and traditional wisdom of house construction in Okinawa gives fresh insight to the islands. Discover the mark of beauty of the traditional Okinawan home.
