I'm half way through watching this documentary and Andy Oldfield has impressed me as a patient and encouraging tutor and mentor to these apprentices. He knew when to set targets and when to push the issue with the woman stonemason too. Difficult because she has obvious talent but tunes out what she didn't want to hear.

I started out as a carpenter's helper on a motel. Lots of hand nailing of sheath and sub floors. It was my first real job. Cramps? oh yes. But in my hammer hand.

the woman had an absolutely garbage attitude, refused to listen to advice and in general wasted this amazing opportunity, she seems like a cutout from the tumblr crowd if there ever was one.

starquant Most trades are pretty light going compared to masonry.

"the tumblr crowd" is an interesting comment, but yeah, there's does seem to be this huge divide between the crowd of fascicle, image-driven hedonists that want their quick fix of simple imagery and those who have a personal drive to sweat the details to achieve tangible, lasting, aesthetics.

starquant I know-she made a great piece, didn't she? I'll eat part of my words, but I don't think she would make a stonemason-but who cares, she didn't want to be one anyway!
