This is the very rare English version of the Italian film Taras Bulba Il cosacco. The film was released in 1962 and immediately fell into obscurity being overshadowed by the popular American film, with the same title, released the same year. Taras Bulba Il cosacco was a widescreen Italian costume drama and did not make it to the US until about 1970 and then only in this "pan and scan" version for late night TV. In the US, it was known as The Plains of Battle or The Fighting Cossacks. Popular European actor, at the time, Vladimir Medar, is Taras Bulba.

@edmonton906
@edmonton906 2 ай бұрын
Good observation. Yes, Lorenzon would have fit the part perfectly. He is known to audiences outside Italy for the small but important part in The Good, The Bad and the Ugly. This version of Taras Bulba fell into total obscurity because of bad timing - released the same time as the popular US film Taras Bulba. I don't think it was ever released in theaters in the US. It was shown rarely on late night TV in the US in the 1970s under various titles including The Fighting Cossacks. I remember this film with the title The Plains of Battle. This was done to somehow distinguish it from the other Taras Bulba movie that everyone knew at the time. Hopefully, an original widescreen version of this film exists somewhere.

@@edmonton906 Thank you for Replying to my Comment. I think Livio Lorenzon is sadly Underrated. I'd never seen this Movie until 5 Days ago. I Own a DVD Copy of the Yul Brynner Tony Curtis Version. Sadly, I doubt either of Taras' Sons had a Brooklyn Accent. To me the Italian Version comes off as more Grand, especially during the Exterior Shots and the Battle Scenes.

Taras Bulba may well be the rarest of the Italian "Sword and Sandal" films never having a proper release since it was completed at the same time as the popular American film with Yul Brynner. All films of the Italian Sword and Sandal genre were produced strictly as entertainment and do not reflect historical accuracy.

@@seymourskinner2533 The title is correct. It is an Italian film titled Taras Bulba Il cosacco (which translates Taras Bulba the cossack). In 1970, on late night US TV, the film went under the title Plains of Battle. @edmonton906
@edmonton906 Жыл бұрын
@@seymourskinner2533 I list it with the correct original title. Fighting cossacks may be an interesting working title but the title on this old print does not identify the actual film. You would otherwise not know that you are watching the lost Taras Bulba Il cosacco. I am aware of several other movies that are mistitled completely on prints for whatever reason. This is not click bait. Click bait is for business. The channel is not monetized (accept no payments) and not advertised - lost movies and clips etc. for those who may be interested only. There is a very rare lost silent cossack movie (not Hollywood) which could eventually be shown, if there is interest, highly mistitled on a print the tartars. From an archive view, I would not show it under the labeled title but under the correct original title.

@@edmonton906 Thank you. I bet Daviderullo7676 watched a glimpse of this movie and misremembered it as the Tony Curtis, Yul Brynner version, so did I at first. The similarities are too many to count.

Duh? It's the same story. It's fiction. Gogol wrote it to kiss Russia's ass to try and secure a teaching job. Such a suck-up. The Cossacks were paid by Poland. When they weren't getting hired by Poland, they were drunk and committing robberies. Inviting Russia as an ally after the 1648 rebellion, set Ukraine back 300 years. Today they are finally coming around to see that Russia kept them backwards, but Poland built schools for them even back in the 1600s, long before the U.S. was even a country. The damage with this story, is that some people think this is real history.@@stargate1555

This is a TOTALLY DIFFERENT Italian adaptation! The Hollywood version with YUL BRYNNER, TONY CURTIS, and CHRISTINE KAUFMANN is much BETTER and more SPECTACULAR!!!!

You are CORRECT!!!! The COSSACKS are mainly RUSSIANS of "LITTLE RUSSIA" (today called"Ukraina") LITTLE RUSSIA is the ORIGINAL RUSSIA and the CRADLE of RUSSIAN CIILIZATION (long before MOSCOW and even longer before SAINT PETERSBURG)

It clearly says in the beginnig of the movie that the ukraine was a russian territory annexed by Poland in 1569. Bad for you and your propaganda my friend.

@@Eowynnofrohan in the book Taras and his friends go fighting with slogan "for the Russia". Ukraine is the territory, not the country. in this movie they made cossacks savages, and made the betrayer good guy, best hero with great love story, she saves him, he saves her, young love, blah blah

@@valchehov9703That was changed in the book. First print was definitely Ukraine the nation, then someone maybe Gogol, changed it to Little Russia to appease the Russian chauvinists.
