I'm also a choir boy. I picked up the third right away too. Appreciate this teaching but C is a pretty easy key to find harmony in, and it's a very common key for songs to be sung in. What about unusual or rare keys? How do I improve harmonizing in F sharp major or B flat minor? In harder keys i sometimes royally mess up my harmony and sound like I have no idea how to sing.

I'm confused. Is it emerge or immerse? Cuz they have essentially opposite meanings. Great informational video...I can always tell when I hear great harmony and I love it but I didn't really "know" the reason it's harmony. This technical stuff is fascinating...easy to tell what you like but this helps understand why.

Hi. Interested in your comments. I've sung in a 4 part harmony Male Voice Choir for well over 30 years. I play guitar and sing in small acoustic ensembles. Believe me I am immersed in the music. In choir I have to sing harmonies all the time. BUT, they have to be learned by rote, note by note, repeated ad infinitum before I can sing the part. I have no ability whatsoever to simply harmonise against another singer without being strictly taught what to sing. Playing in pubs/clubs with various ensembles over the years it would have been great to sing a harmony against another singer. I always end up singing the melody. Personally, I think there's rather more to it that just being immersed in the music. Despite the fact that I've been doing it for 30 years, if you sing me a note, I won't reliably find the third, until someone sings it for me! That 'next step' has always eluded me!

I really like a prefer to sing harmonies and it's not always easy and is definitely easier for some than others. But as I tell my children and students and athletes...... Everything in life is hard....... Until it's not.! There was a time when we couldn't walk or talk or read or whatever. .... but with time and practice and "immersion" those thing became second nature and we do them without thinking about that we're doing them. So practice properly and realize that things take time. If it's something you like and enjoy and want to do it is worth your time, however long it takes
